Apple Updates Entire iPod Family, Bringing Capacity and Performance Bumps to iPod Touch and Video Camera to iPod Nano

I had the same experience when I called Best Buy. They didn't have a clue that new iPods were out and didn't know when they'd have any.

I suspect the big box stores won't have them for quite some time - pity, becuase I have a Best Buy gift card buring a hole in my pocket :).

will you need the nike+ transmitter anymore?

it's not clear to me here so maybe someone knows the answer, i searched this thread and i read the description on apple.com and still don't understand:

with the new iPod Nano, will you need an nike+ transmitter?

i know you'll need the sensor in your shoe, but will we still need the little rectangle transmitter on the bottom of your iPod? it's built into the iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch but, i can't tell if we need it for the nano.

thanks in advance for an explanation!

Look the camera was originally planed. It most have been. Do you remember the hama cases? , These cases where correct for the ipod nano, look at their touch cases. The touch cases clearly have a central hole on the back, and I believe it was for the camera. So yes, Apple has a production problem, but originally they wanted to include a camera in the touch. And apparently they didn't inform Hama of this problem and this product change.
I believe we will see a ipod touch camera edition within 3 months, until that, I'll stick with my classic.

I'm sorry if this remark has been posted before, but after reading 7 pages of comments, I was a bit bored.

nyboy1

Im with ya. By december, I hope they release a camera for it.

Just don't geddit ...

I just don't see how Apple have built in a camera to the iPod Nano and given it recording abilities, yet the iPhone 3G still has no recording ability (on a stock OS), dispite having a camera since it's initial release .... just don't understand why they would do that. (i know its to make the 3gs stand out, but common ...)

:apple: KrayzieKray :apple:

We all know the real reason for no camera is iphone, and all of the parties involved on that money train. I would not doubt apple gets a kickback from Att on data plans.

Amazing...

I've been a Macrumors member since 2003. I'm always impressed by the venom spewed forth after every.Single.Product.Update/Release Apple does.

Look back at the original iPod release... "What is Apple thinking?" "It'll never sell" "They lost me forever" "It should have had... Then I would have bought it and nine more for all my friends"

The people who like the update(s) are too scared to post because they'll get flamed. Or, they simply don't care enough to get involved because they're happy.

So look back at posting after posting of members saying that Apple made a major, major, maybe fatal error here and they're through, done. "Verizon, Sprint, Microsoft, Dell, HP, Zune, Blackberry, Palm here I come!"

See Ya!;) You'll be so much happier not reading the site or buying Apple products. The lack of stress will do you good, however those who stay will be without some entertainment, but we'll live.

Get over it!

Oh get over it people,no camera ect? big whoop!..its suppose to be an ipod!. If you want a camera go get an iphone otherwise stop your whining. Most people have mobile phones now that have decent and better cameras anywayz so who cares!.All that matters is it has more processing power now and memory. Oh and its funny that people are dissapointed because they heard rumours of a camera and more on the new ipod touch release when they fail to realise that this is a rumour site which means anything can be true or false!..bit ironic!.

Can't say I'm not a fan of the nano update. It's pretty, it's got a few good little new features - a camera, dears - and IMO it's just a nice little step toward ever greater products. Not every Apple release has to be massively ground-shattering... they're only that because they're so relatively infrequent. ;)

I wonder just how shiny the new nano is compared to 4G.

I was counting on the iPod Touch to have a camera. if it did i was going to buy one. but it dont so i am not even going to worry about it, they lost a sale here.

the hardware update is almost worth it, but since it lacks the camera i was hoping about Apple can forget it i will take my money to someone else.

What in sams hell was Apple thinking on not adding a camera in to the IPT and putting one into the nano, man Apple failed hard this time.

So Apple wants to market the ipod touch as a gaming system. And who would be the main demographic of buyers for gaming systems?

Answer: teens and young adults

And besides playing games, what's the next most interesting thing young people like to do with their mobile devices?

Answer: take pictures/video of themselves and their friends and post them to facebook, youtube, and twitter.

So, wow, having a camera on the iPod touch would make it an even stronger seller in that market - so I'm guessing Apple added a camera to the iPod touch, right?

NOPE.

It would be practically comical, if it weren't so downright confounding and illogical.

Oh get over it people,no camera ect? big whoop!..its suppose to be an ipod!.

What the hell does that mean? In point of fact, the ipod touch was supposed to be a multi-function device.

Steve Jobs says he considers the ipod touch now to be primarily a gaming device.

Well, I know quite a few people who own ipod touches of one generation or another - and, guess what, NONE of them considers their device to be primarily just a gaming system.

Now I'm really steamed.

The iTunes store is now hocking its wares this way under Quick Links:

iPhone Apps from TV Ads
iPod touch Games from TV Ads

Read the handwriting on the wall folks...this is where Apple is going with this.

This is going to be my last post on the matter.

Tell you what Mr. Jobs - in your next incarnation of the iPod touch (if there is one) why not go ahead and fully cripple the device? Since it's only a gaming system to you, it doesn't need any web applications, no productivity or other types of apps, no media capabilities, remove bluetooth...just make it a completely dumb device that only allows users to buy, download and play games from the precious iTunes store, tethered to their macs. If consumers want anything more than that, make them buy iPhones (which must be selling like toadstools to prompt this marketing strategy) along with their $1200 a year data plans.

I've had it. Selling my touch on ebay -- anybody want a gaming device?

if they put a camera in touch, no body wants to buy the nano, they'll be piss off that way. Glad that I can save the money on another mac thou

 The iPod Nano and iPod Touch are in completely different sections of the market. The camera honestly won't cause the sales of the iPod Touch to decrease very much.

L lenses, eh? Have the 16-35mm USM? :)

...er, I mean, I kinda forgot why I'm mad at the Touch's lack of a camera as I'm always carrying a heavy DSLR around.

Nope, but I have a 300mm ƒ/2.8 IS :)

And I honestly don't understand what all the fuss is about the iPod Touch's lack of a camera. Most every phone made nowadays has a camera built in that you could use, just transfer that to your Mac and edit it there. Most people are going to have their cell phone with them more than their iPod anyway.

2009 summary:

* Snow Leopard = no visible changes, some new features
* iPhone 3G S = no visible changes, some new features
* iPod Touch = no visible changes, some new features
* iPod Classic = no visible changes, some new features
* iPod Nano = some visible changes and new features
* iPod Shuffle = new form factor

... pretty bland year for Apple.

Could Apple be letting up on iPod Touch features because the new mystery device might replace the high end ones?

The touch form factor goes back to the first iPhone introduced in early 2007. It could be three years between major re-designs.

I mean this forum is called MacRumors...

don't really agree on that. iPhone 3GS has huge changes, including much faster perfomance and a really nice video&picture camera. What do you want? They have to uphold the form factor and the resolution to make all appstore-apps compatible with the different iDevices.

iPod Classic is just made for large libraries and the capacity bump is great for this group of people. Same format, 40 GB more space and same price - again, what do you want?

Man... they should put a camera in the iPod Classic *sigh*

Wouldn't mind a bump to a 2.75" screen and a slightly higher res... or preferably actually a little more processing power. Or more memory for less spin-up...

Saw the new 8gig nano in purple, black, and silver at my local costco for $139.99. They said they just got them in today. Don't have any of the other color nor the 16gig models yet though. Also had the classic and the 8gig (I think) touch.

lol at the comments that are trying to defend for Apple.

'no one need a camera in the iPod!' - then why are so many people complaining? if people really don't care then why are they putting it into the nano?

'if they put it in the touch then no one will buy the nano and it will be too similar to the iPhone' - limiting a machine's capability is the way to differentiate their product lines? They might as well take out the gaming capability of the iPhone to make the iTouch even more standout as a gaming device.

Watch Apple is going to put a camera into the Touch early next year.

I was one for defending Apple - and I still stand by my decision.

However, the things is - if Apple do go ahead and put the camera in, let them bloody do it. A lot of research recently (ifixit) has found that there was a space for a camera in the touch and a lot of speculation that it was dropped out last minute due to technical issues. Imagine for a second if they released the touch with a camera - the backlash it would cause, people moaning about this, that and the other.

If there was a space for camera and they didn't include it - there must have been a genuine reason why they didn't put it in.
