...what is it with this fascination for Retina displays on iMacs? I'm typing this on mine and I'm 12 inches away from the screen. I'm a designer, I have to do close-up stuff and as I see it, a Retina is just way over the top - I can easily do without it. It's like people who want to print advertising hoardings at 300dpi when they're going to me tens of feet away from them to read them properly. I'm in for one NOW! Now where's that "Take My Money!" Meme?

Just my take on the matter but I don't think any of the people complaining about the iMac not having a Retina Display even know why they need it. The iMac 27" has a 2560X1600 resolution. People get hung up on buzz words and want "that feature" on their choice of product without even knowing why they want or need it.
I don't see any reason why anyone would need a Retina Display on the 27" iMac, not even sure why anyone would need it on the 21.5"?

As SJ said, "Customers don't know what they want". ;)

Intriguingly, they switched back to a "laptop" processor from a desktop processor. Perhaps this makes sense in light of the fact that Broadwell (and eventually most of the following) are rumored to be BGA (laptop socket) only...

How about a Trustor 5MB hard disk for the Apple ][ in the early 1980s for more than $1000 (in early 1980s dollars).

Compared to tape (and the floppy), it was great!

Those were the days for sure! ;-)

No, those were not the days. I remember paying $500 in 1987 for an external HD that held the equivalent of 30 floppys.

Damn... they would have to upgrade this when I'm trying to pay off debts. :p

780MX with 4GB ram? YES PLEASE. Good for gaming, should be awesome for us prosumer 3d artists.

Guess I'll wait until one of those hits the Refurb section around January.

We pulled the trigger on a new iMac over the weekend even though we suspected an update in the next month. As soon as I saw this I jumped on the phone and called Apple. My iMac hadn't shipped yet, so they told me that I'd be getting the updated one instead! All my BTO specs stick, Oh happy day!

This is how things should be done more often. Not every little incremental upgrade needs to have a grand announcement during some keynote speech.

Exactly, like the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2. Absolutely nothing announced yesterday that required the usual boring MS keynote. It was all just to hype people up to draw attention to MS just so they can showcase a nominal spec upgrade.

I don't see what all the fuss is about with regards to the gpu update! this seems to be merely a rebrand in most cases. 750m is just a rebranded 660m with maybe slightly higher clocks. 780m is just a rebranded 680mx with maybe slightly faster clocks (do we know what the clocks are yet?) the 680mx already had amazing overclock potential, and mine easily clocks to a default GTX 680 clocks in wondows obviously.
I haven't seen the specs of the 775m but I expect it to be a rebrand of the 675mx.

The only thing that give me the upgrade itch is the pcie ssd option

Well, the desktop version of the GTX 780 is 30% faster than the GTX 680 so yeah, 30% is like a hell of an update for video cards.

But it's not the same for the mobile version.
The GTX 780m is a GTX 680m. And the GTX 780m is worth a GTX 760. So yeah, not that big of an update

What laptop CPUs are they using? I see the 4570R, 4570S, 4570, 4670K and the 4770K. All desktop CPUs.

I Would like a retina display not for the resolution but for larger text mainly on the tool bar. It is to small on a 2560x1440 display imo.

They are using desktop processors. Try to find a quad core i5 at 3.4GHZ in a laptop.

Seriously? EVERY computer company, phone company, and device manufacturer updates their machines quite often. Same for camera manufacturers, cars, radios and the like. Your machine still works for what you bought it for. No one is being "fooled."

How about this: "so what about ppl who bought recently launched Ford trucks which is just 10months old. ford think that it can silently refresh new trucks and people will easily accept the fact that they are fools.
not so cool stop fooling people ford :( :(
the should atleast replace engines for newly bought trucks"

so what about ppl who bought recently launched imacs which is just 10months old.
apple think that it can silently refresh new imacs and people will easily accept the fact that they are fools.

Yawn! No SSD standard = will skip this iteration. After all, what's the difference between this and my 2013 i3 21.5GHz? The new one has the same monitor resolution and homes a HDD. IMO not worth if you already have a working iMac at your home. Professionals may have different needs.

I would. $3k wouldn't be out of the question there.

Really? How does a retina screen justify the enormous cost on a desktop iMAC?
This is a serious question as I don't even understand the unbelievable tradeoff people make for the retina MBP.

Almost makes me wish i hadn't just built a PC, with 3D display, 256boot SSD, 4TB "accelerated by intel rapid response and a 64gb SSD" Storage drive , SLI graphics and an i7 cpu for the same price as the 2nd tier 21",

Actually, i spent £1200, not sure what that equates to in dollars...

im happy with the PC for gaming, macs just don't cut the mustard, but then i wouldn't buy a mac for high end gaming, and i see no need to upgrade my 2011 iMac for using as a productivity tool until it finally dies

aftermarket pci ssd......

the best thing about this refresh for me is that i now should be able to buy an pci ssd from owc (hope they release one soon -ish) and stick it in the imac myself (bto: 8gb ram but-->32gb owc, i7, 4gb gpu)

YAY :O

No and it's not even close.

rMBP is 220 ppi. For the iMac to be retina at 109 ppi, you'd need to sit at a distance twice as long as you use your macbook, which is not the case. I use my Macbook at an approximate distance of 60cm. There's no way anyone uses an iMac at 1.2 meters. At most it'll be around 70-75cm's. So you need around 200ppi for a retina iMac. And that's feasible today. Just cram the 4K into the 27 inch screen and you are done.
OK, ASUS PQ321Q UltraHD is a 32" 4K screen. $3500 approx.

Gonna sell a lot of iMacs with that cost factored in.

Not.

Yeah well that's what a pcie 1TB SSD costs, apple didn't make that up
Actually, the 1TB SSDs are down to $580. So the price is about right for Apple. They force you to buy their proprietary drive at 100% markup, LOL.

This is where Apple started, and they are going back to their roots. Proprietary = FAIL !!
