Just ordered the new 27" with 3 GB Fusion. This is my first Mac ever. I just left Microsoft last week after 17 years of employment, and have been waiting to jump on the new iMac since the moment I left. Super excited to get it! I'm pretty sure this is going to be one amazing computer...

two thumbs up.

You're always behind the curve with technology. Just buy what you need when you need it.

It's more than that; our college has a limited IT budget and the fiscal year always rolls over in July. So we can't order anything until then, when we know what our budget is. We have to get all equipment installed in August before the semester starts. Once we have the equipment, that lab won't be upgraded again for another five years. So having the latest tech is really important; it has to last a long time (in tech years).

still no Retina Display so still won't be getting one :-(

it's an extra $500+ isn't it?

Isn't the iMac already HD..... retinas 4k? I mean I think my ipad 3 looks great but my ipad mini looks fine. People act like your getting a box tv because it's not retina.

WOuld have been nice if Apple dropped the price a bit like they did with the Air's but what can you do. Guying this as soon as they have it at the apple store

Does this debunk the rumor that the rmbp will ship without a dGPU? Well, at least for the 15 inch? That's a deal breaker for me.

I wish the smaller version had the option of the 3.5 i7. I know there might be cooling issues, but still I wish they had designed for it and made that option available.

And if Apple is selling a 3.5Ghz i7 iMac for $2199 (i7 4771 cpu costs $319 at newegg), would it be that unrealistic for them to sell the base model of the upcoming Mac Pro with a Xeon E5-1620 v2 3.7Ghz (list price $294) for around that same $2199, if not a little less? CPU is about the same price, and I'd argue that for what the 27 inch monitor costs they should be able to cover the things that are unique to the Mac Pro. Sure the MP case probably isn't dirt cheap to design and make but neither is the iMac's.

What is Apple's stance with Pages/Numbers/Keynote now? As I'm going through the options for the new iMacs, these three pieces of software are listed as "Pre-Installed Software" but yet there is an option to pay $19.99/each.

I thought these were going to start being free with new hardware?

They mean they will preinstall it for you if you choose to pay for them. They are not included in the price of the iMac. They are only free with iPhones. I'm confused too as to why they didn't give it for free on Macs.

To me the most interesting thing about this announcement is that there is no word of a free upgrade to Mavericks with purchase of a new iMac, like there usually is when a new Mac comes out right before an OS X release. This leads me to believe Mavericks might be free.

I've no doubt that Apple will be releasing a 4k monitor to go with the new Pro. We'll see then what the true cost of these displays are.

Yes, especially since there are 4k-sized desktop pictures in mavericks. ASUS sells a 4k monitor for $3500, it'll probably be around that.

Did they upgrade that weak ass HDD in the 21.5 yet?

Well, seeing as it's a 2.5-inch, 9.5mm drive in the 21.5-inch iMacs now, what exactly would they upgrade it to? 1 TB is as much capacity as you can get in that form factor, and there is only one 7200 RPM, 1 TB model on the market at this point (HGST Travelstar 7K1000) which launched earlier this year. Single sourcing the HDD for your base model desktop would be a pretty stupid move for Apple, and while they could offer a 7200 RPM version as a CTO option, why would they (and who would buy it) when there is already a Fusion Drive option for $200 for those who care about performance?

On another note, it seems that the new iMacs don't get Thunderbolt 2.0 this go round. Furthermore, there is nothing alluding to DisplayPort 1.2 support, so it looks like they might still be using Cactus Ridge instead of Redwood Ridge. And this is a little disconcerting:

Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to a 30-inch display (2560 by 1600 pixels) on an external display

I have to imagine that multiple external displays are still supported; I'm guessing this was just worded for the 21.5-inch model which can only drive a single external display at 2560x1600.

Their "secret" update cycles (with non-availability of older gear once the new stuff is out) is one of the main reasons why Apple doesn't get their foot into the enterprise market.

Nice spec bump, though. Unfortunately the SSD prices are insane and having no SSD per default in a desktop at this price is unacceptable.

Please try that with Asus, Dell, lenova, etc...

This update does not make your machine any less usable. Same with the iPad 3 folks, who only enjoyed the "king of the hill" label for 6 months.

I was sooooooo mad about that! I bought my iPad 3 so that I could brag that I had the best and so that people will know me and girls will flock to me! /s

Quite a hefty spec update in the GPU department there...If I was in my upgrade year I'd stick with the 3TB FD and add the 4GB GPU...Would certainly help X-Plane along nicely. I think we will see more mainstream game companies writing for OSX now...they have always been bleating about texture memory, now they don't have an excuse.

This is how things should be done more often. Not every little incremental upgrade needs to have a grand announcement during some keynote speech.

This is pretty much how they have been updated the iMacs over the last few years. There are a couple exceptions, like when they made it thinner.

Actually, the 1TB SSDs are down to $580. So the price is about right for Apple. They force you to buy their proprietary drive at 100% markup, LOL.

This is where Apple started, and they are going back to their roots. Proprietary = FAIL !!

It's a pcie ssd, not sata. I don't know about apple, but mushkin sells their 960gb pcie ssd for more than a thousand bucks and it has reading speeds on 2150 mb/s http://www.ramexperts.com/ssd-drives/mushkin-enhanced-scorpion-deluxe-mknp44sc960gb-dx-pcie-960gb-sata-internal-solid-state-drive-ssd-pcie-2-0-x8.html

Holy schnikes, hope you didn't have to sell a liver or anything like that.

Congrat, should last as long as the prior version - other than storage :( But that is what external drives are for - specifically for desktops.

Yeah...I have a 4TB NAS that houses all my stuff. I prefer to think of the iMac as just a client.

Really? How does a retina screen justify the enormous cost on a desktop iMAC?
This is a serious question as I don't even understand the unbelievable tradeoff people make for the retina MBP.

Visually, to me the retina is by far much cleaner, brighter, and a nicer presentation.

I stick with the retina on the ipad, laptops, and would love a retina desktop.

LOL what are you talking about? Enterprise segment doesn't care about if their employees are issued with the latest processor from PC makers. My company standard issues laptop that every employee can choose are: 1. ThinkPad (13 inch, thin, ssd), 2. ThinkPad (big with discreet graphic and ssd, 3. retina MBP 15, 4. mba 13 (max configured), and over 70% of our 100k people company worldwide choose Macs. All these computers are on lease and each employee simply gets a new one every other year. Most people are not well versed about refresh cycle and could care less about getting the latest models.

When companies purchase large quantities of IT gear they usually want to get what they ordered and not something different, just because the vendor decides that the gear isn't available any more. Purchases with larger volumes can easily take 6 months to go through the enterprise's bureaucracy.
And what if you have licensed that stuff for a specific application (i.e. something mission critical or legally challenging like in medicine) and you just can't get a replacement for it ?

What unbelievable tradeoff? Now I'm scared. And here I though I was so smart with my retina MBP :D

Seems like a very solid machine. If you want dual graphics and Thunderbolt 2.0, you'll have to upgrade to the new MacPro when it arrives. I'm surprised that Apple didn't upgrade Thunderbolt on these.

so what about ppl who bought recently launched imacs which is just 10months old.
apple think that it can silently refresh new imacs and people will easily accept the fact that they are fools.
not so cool stop fooling people apple :( :(

they should atleast replace processors for newly bought imacs

Why you so MAD? If you bought a new car today and it was updated next year would you want the new rims and sound system?

Apple owe you nothing and you're clearly new to this stuff companies not just Apple update all the time, Deal with it and stop raging. Is your iMac not working now this is out? Exactly. If you want to be broke then keep updating your macs yearly, or accept it and enjoy your machine knowing when you do upgrade in the future you'll get more.

I am not buying a new imac as I have a 2011 one but a rough price comparison says with i7 and fusion drive and 16GB ram (have to get it bto) that's $2.5k whereas my old 2011 imac with i7 and upgraded gpu and 7200 drive was only $1.8k. $700 price increase. Well $600 if you include the after market 16GB ram I bought.

Also 2 points.

Entry level 21.5 - What's up with "Intel Iris Pro graphics". I'd really like to know some insight into why Apple "supposedly" cheaped out here.

High end 21.5 - NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M graphics processor with 1GB of GDDR5 memory
About time this has 1gb VRam. Very nice.

Well, it surely shows that Apple does not want to sacrifice the GPU performance. The Iris Pro is faster then old gen, so its ok. It is slower than 740M however...
