I can still see pixels at normal viewing distances on an iMac display and I'm sure I'm not alone. At the very least text is noticeably smudgy especially compared to a rMBP. Everything will eventually become retina. It's just too expensive this year for the iMac.

Wow these are really expensive in the UK.

If you take the ex-VAT price of the base model and convert it into dollars it comes to: $1530.

So we are paying a $230 premium.

not sure if anyone else noticed this, but the only mention of "pcie" storage is in the press release. i could be wrong but i would think apple would plaster that somewhere on the spec sheet on the imac page, just like on the mac pro which doesn't even exist yet. i have a feeling that was a gaff / typo, and can't see apple ommiting something like that off their marketing. "hey, we added 10gbps wifi to the new iphone, should we mention that to our customers?" "nahhh, they will figure it out for themselves".

The key is this statement by Apple in the "Advanced storage options" section of the "Features" page:

This flash storage is now up to 50 percent faster than the previous generation...

Since the sequential performance of the previous generation was generally bound by SATA 6Gb/s, we can infer that this is a PCIe based flash solution. The technical distinction there is either one which Apple's marketeers assumed would be lost on the general public, or they were concerned that expressly stating that it was PCIe based would connote that even faster performance was possible yet not forthcoming.

BTW, Hellhammer (Kristian Vättö) posted a writeup over at Anandtech as well: http://www.anandtech.com/show/7365/apple-updates-the-imac-haswell-cpus-pcie-ssds-80211ac-wifi

And not even a notice at Apple's website about this release. All the hype goes to the iPhone 5s/5c and iOS 7. And even to iTunes Rádio. Not even a footnote about the iMac...

Apple isn't a computer company anymore. Hell, they removed "computer" from the name several years back.

It's a consumer device company now. You should be glad they even make computers anymore. Jobs even considers killing anything remotely resembling a "pro" models of any Apple computer.

Apple has moved on from the "pro" segment. Soon it seems, pro's will be forced to move on from Apple.

Does it use the same RAM as the 2011 iMac or not? Would I be able to use my RAM sticks in the new model?

p.s.: A $500 difference in Switzerland - what a terrible mark-up on the original price, given that the local tax here is just around 8%.

1600MHz DDR3 memory; four user-accessible SO-DIMM slots - for the 27. The 21.5's memory is not user changeable.

My 2011 21.5 iMac uses 1333mhz ram sticks. So I would guess you can't use your old ran sticks in the new iMac 27.

this update possibly means...

just a few guesses based on this quiet update of the iMacs, especially in reference to earlier reports of Apple due to have a "very busy fall":

1) Mavericks is ready to be launched by mid-October at the latest, along with the new Mac Pros (and very possibly the refreshed MacBook Pros) alongside it.

2) updated iPads (9.7" and Mini with Retina display?) will launch near the end October or early November.

3) Apple has some other "wow" product up it's sleeve to reveal by the end of November (iWatch? iTV? 4K display?).

Would you buy one with a Retina Display for 2x the cost?

Exactly. Not to mention that the 27" is already better than HD quality. How much more do you really need? I'm sure well see a retina display iMac someday when its cost effective. But it probably won't be for a loooong time, and is hardly necessary. So why even wait? I think being productive now is worth much more. But hey, that's just me.

It seems that in low-end 21,5" CPU would be i5-4570R but it doesn't have 6MB L3 cache, it has 4MB... So Apple must be wrong stating "2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor (Turbo Boost up to 3.2GHz) with 6MB L3 cache" because such haswell CPU with Iris Pro doesn't exist.

it's the code name of the embedded gpu in the intel chip.. they are in the HD5x00 line-up. The former ones were HD4000 and HD3000. Mac mini use them since they don't have a dedicated GPU.

You mean hopefully will use them. So far Intel has only announced Iris Pro on quad core CPUs. The duals make do with HD5100 tops. Then again, Intel has made special edition chips for Apple before.

Yeah I believe October will be the Mac pros , MacBook pros (they better be!) new ipad and ipad mini

Tim cook did say a busy fall with new products through early 2014 (can't remember where he said that) so I feel if a new product (ie I watch or something) may not be ready till next year, dunno though

Yep. If the 3rd gen iPad taught us anything, it's that retina hurts performance if the hardware isn't ready for it. I'd rather wait until the hardware can really handle it.

there is only one 7200 RPM, 1 TB model on the market at this point (HGST Travelstar 7K1000) which launched earlier this year.

I bought two of these..
i must say I'm very very pleased..
speed over usb 3 is very reasonable for handling 10 to 40GB mkv's

Most of the iMac market is people who don't know a Haswell from a handsaw. A little processor update is only big news to the nanometer counters among us.

Upgrading the RAM to 16GB is still overpriced.:(

16GB should be standard on top of line 27" iMac

Perhaps you are an older gentleman or have less than ideal eyesight, unfortunately. But I see the pixels at regular viewing distances. The iMac screen is quite fuzzy compared even to the iPad.

:apple:

If I were an "older gentleman" or someone with bad eyesight I would not be able to work from more than 80cm - actually it must be opposite situation, as perhaps you need to use your iMac from a closer distance than me.

In any case, I have provided the link for you to test it...prove me wrong, then.

MacPro?

Using the voice of the great Spanish soccer commentator Andres Cantor:

Where is the MacProooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO?????

Bull. Whilst you may not be able to actually distinguish individual pixels at those working distances, you still can see jagged edges/antialiasing artifacts. Text simply does not look as crisp as it would at double the res but same virtual real estate surface area.

AGAIN: the definition of retina as used by Apple concerns ONLY the possibility to see individual pixels. It has NOTHING to do with "crispness" or "looking better".

If you want to redefine that term to suit your needs, fine. Otherwise, use the link provided and prove me wrong.

Thanks - too bad, then.

I'd like to see the power draw on the 21.5" with Iris. I really like seeing the Iris Pro in the base model. That is plenty for most people.

Looks like a nice setup. With 4k monitors still costing 3K+, it will probably be a year or so before we see a 27" retina monitor. I've been using the 1440p 27" size for a while and love it. I doubt I would need 4k, especially since I sit ~3-4' away.

iPhone was released four days ago and has been selling millions a day. The 27 inch model doesn't even start shipping for two to three weeks, expect it to be featured more prominently by then.

Using the voice of the great Spanish soccer commentator Andres Cantor:

Where is the MacProoooooooo

They said Fall, so probably October or November. And someone mentioned earlier that Apple doesn't need to wait for new OS versions to release a new computer, but with things like TB2, the new MP probably won't ship until Mavericks is out, estimated late October.

nice upgrades

for a price anyway. If I were in the market, I'd definitely swerve toward the 27" size though. More customization options.

Student discount is not as hefty as it once was (bummer). I am glad to see these were upgraded today.

Now let's see the Mac Pro, MBPs and Minis updates too.
