OK, so I've done a quick 5-minute test concentrating on the "improved Powerpoint import/export" for some of the things that have been annoying me the most. Here's a pro/con list:

Keynote-to-Powerpoint:
+ Fonts are now themeable in Powerpoint
– Animation Start points (i.e. "Start With Build" or "Start After Build") are still exported as "Start After Previous" to Powerpoint (yes, "Start With Previous" DOES exist in Powerpoint!). Seriously, Apple: How difficult is it?
– Keynote Theme Colours do NOT translate properly to Powerpoint Theme Colours (including font themes colours!)

Not looking good on the import/export side of things. Apple, do your homework!

Does this update fix broken auto saves on documents?

Edit: Never mind! It seems I had the "Always ask to save changes when closing documents" checked in Settings > General.

This is great news for me. I much prefer pages and keynote over Word and PP for what I need to do with them. I create a vast amount of educational material and in that respect both Apple apps are night and day better than their MS counterpart. I only wish Keynote could create jeopardy style templates - where the tile is live and can move to another slide then return and preserve the changes just made. For that, I have to keep using PP, but it's so much more difficult to be creative with PP compared to KN. Numerous times I've had students ask me the name of the "app" I'm using only to find out I created them (in keynote) and be shocked. I've never had students say that with one of my PP presentations unfortunately.

Until they restore auto-updating dates in Pages documents, I'll keep using Pages '09, which has this feature. I have many form letters in Pages '09 that have an auto-updating date. I don't understand why that feature can't be included in newer versions of Pages. Sigh.
Edit: Inserted Dates can now be clicked on and "Set to Today." A tiny improvement. Still no option to make them auto-updating. How hard can it be?

The icons are one of the few things they didn't screw up with the new iWork. It's easier to recognize icons with a pointing device when they have distinct shapes, and aren't all circles or squares. It used to be part of apples HIG back when they cared about it.

Pinstripes were awful––a real eyesore with no purpose.

How is it easier to recognize them, and how does having a pointing device change that?

Personally I wish Apple would just enforce iOS style icons on the Mac (or something similar). The state of icons on the Mac is pretty inconsistent/bad right now, and I'm not a fan of using a third party solutions to correct it (which, it should be mentioned, gets harder with every OS update).

Just curious, but why is it a shame? It's not a contest. Should apple rush it just to be first? If they did, you would be bashing apple for rushing and making mistakes. Apple just can't win with this crowd. I'm so happy that Apple succeeds very well despite the bashing here. Obviously, the bashing isn't very effective.

I don't think it is a race so much as it should be a given that Apple's first-party software supports all of the features that it builds into its operating system on day one. Can you imagine how much ridicule there would be from the Apple camp if MS Office lacked features in the new Windows 10? People would say "typical MS and their low quality, this is why we buy from Apple, products that just work" and "we buy Apple because the hardware, software, operating system are all integrated and therefore better."

Now, I am not actually complaining about this... I am just telling you the reasoning behind it, which I do agree with. Nevertheless, I don't use iWorks, so I don't have a strong opinion about this per se, but I am only speaking in generalities.

Now, as for the other people who are saying that iWork is just as good or better than MS Office. That may be true at this particular moment because Office is buggy and keeps crashing. It may even be true across the Mac platform (I don't know, I don't use iWork, like I said)...

But functionality, unfortunately, isn't the only point to a Word processor. If it were, everyone would use Scrivener, Mellel, or Nisus Writer Pro, and certainly not iWork or Office. For Excel, I really don't know of much else that is better. But as far as word processors and presentation software, compatibility is KEY.

I am honestly sick of Apple fans acting like compatibility doesn't matter, and then later hearing the same people pray for the day that PC games are compatible with Macs. People don't JUST use Word and PowerPoint because they are good (which, they are *good*, though perhaps not always great). They use them because they are the standard, for better or for worse.

Rarely has anybody contended that Word is the best. Because it quite clearly is not, even though it is *basically* adequate. The point is, it is standard. If no one is ever going to read your documents, fine, use whatever word processor you want. But, if you are like most people, your documents are made to be read electronically by people in a multitude of locations. For this, you pretty much need Word.

I use other Word processors, but before I send my document anywhere, I open it in Word, double check its formatting, and then save it as a Word document. For compatibility purposes, Word is great because it IS compatible.

This update doesn't say anything about me being able to take notes on Pages using my Apple Pencil and iPad Pro. I really want to rid my entire paper uses for school and go all digital.

Does anyone even care about iWork? Office365 is blowing apples productivity suite out of the water.
Thank you so much for posting YOUR opinion because mine greatly differs. I use Pages to create the banners and flyers for my business office, which also are used on my website. Pages has amazingly professional looking graphics to dress up documents. Word sucks when it comes to graphic design and banner creation. Has the same old ugly look as Publisher.

The best productivity apps keep getting better and further ahead of all the competition. It's amazing Apple does all this for free. Damn it feels good to be an Apple customer.

I'll need a sip of your magic cool-aid, I used almost every version of Pages & Numbers and they lack in features I personally use. Word and Excel are powerful and have way more features (that I use). The only version that also satisfy me is the Google web software (like Word and Excel), they mostly have everything.

I'm going to install these patches and update back!

Well gee whiz. We don't know why this happened. Perhaps there is a good reason. Perhaps they intended to have it ready, but found a last minute issue. Let's not forget that the watch software was delayed a week due to a last minute issue. Let's just bash apple without knowing why this occurred. And BTW, big deal. It wasn't the end of the world. apple released when it was ready, not when you expected them to release. I'm glad apple isn't trying to satisfy you. If they did, they might have some serious issues.

It takes a real fanatic to claim that "Apple iWork is way better than Microsoft Office."

Despite my love for Apple's products, I just can't say this out from my mouth. Just compare Excel vs. Numbers. MS Office is lightyears ahead of Apple's amateur attempt.

Office is STILL a glitchy pile of **** on el capitan tho, whereas pages has been working flawlessly since day one even before this update.

I a trying to figure out why MS updated all of the apps to support split screen except Outlook. That is second on my list after why does outlook keep freezing up if I leave both outlook and Excel or Word open to long at the same time...

The Outlook app is technically outside of MS's Office for iOS. The "core" apps are Word, Excel and PowerPoint. I think Outlook and OneNote etc. are of lower priority or are maintained by another team.
