You know what? .Mac will never take off until Apple makes it free like MSN or FaceBook. They don't stand a chance, and I think it's a very stupid move on Apple. I have a lot of friends that own Macs - but none of them use .Mac for sharing photos or anything (actually they don't use it at all). Nobody wants to pay for this kind of service, including myself. If it was free I am sure all of us would try it out and start using it and Apple would get a lot of "internet market share" and be able to make money on advertising and what else comes with this kind of community. But now... not happening.
Don't agree, although the tweenies are a huge market, I for one would never visit a site like facebook or whatever, just too many ads and other catches, way too juvenille.

interesting... i didn't know that was a confirmed feature of .mac to come?!?!

Well. It still is on Apple's website (Mac OS X -> Leopard -> Features -> Finder). I hope this functionality doesn't get dropped by the time Leopard is released because it sounds VERY convenient.

And now, back to my Mac.
Ever need something on your Mac when you were thousands of miles from home? With Back to My Mac and a .Mac account, you can connect to any of your Macs at home from any Mac on the Internet. Your home computers will appear in the shared section of the sidebar just as they do when you’re in the living room.

I have 10 GB now, automatically. Nice change. I almost bought more storage a few weeks ago, but it felt like a rip off....now I feel like I'm getting what I pay for!

Hm.

The web site shows me as having 10 GB (and I fiddled with the balance some, 1 GB for mail 9 GB for disk), but my iDisk preference is still stuck at 1 GB :(

Nothing Is Free and people are cheap.

I agree, nothing is free and you get what you pay for(now at least) I love no ads on my mail service. I will always be a dotmac member. 4eva!

.Mac says the 10GB storage will be available Aug.14th.

Mine is updated, just waiting for the 512MB of email only space for my wife.

Agree. Although there are some new socializing/networking/blog sites, lesser known, ones that look promising. Also know that some of those sites are now censoring things like external links etc... Thanks to Ask a Ninja for the info :)

My iDisk preferences updated after I played with my online preferences... I bet it will take until Aug 14th, as quoted above, to work everything out. As happy as I am, I want iLife08 to test everything out... hopefully it is shipping or in stores this weekend (MA tax free holiday :))

.Mac is awesome

Ok... so they increased it to 10GB. I mean it may seem pretty low compared to hosting companies out there, but no one has a web gallery interface like .Mac. Keep that in mind.

No ads, pro design, web 2.0, easy sync, you can go on and on....

wow. very impressive. can't wait to get my copy of iLife 08!

Is anybody using a .Mac Family Pack? Is it worthwhile?

It has worked nicely for our family. I get the master account for the family iWeb site and my email, each of my kids has his own iWeb site and email (with everything forwarded to me for safety), and they have another account just for the fun little podcast they do with their friends via Garageband/iWeb.

I got the family pack at a significant discount on eBay and it worked fine.

Wow, not only does the new web gallery not support Panther's Safari, but it doesn't even have a fallback mode for older browsers. You're just locked out. Pathetic!

This browser is incompatible with .Mac Web Gallery.
We support the following browsers:
Mac OS X
Firefox 1.5 or later

This is Apple's example, linked from http://www.apple.com/ilife/iphoto/#webgallery

Unless we see some improved functionality, this is a pretty lame update. Certainly not worthy of mentioning months ago when asked about a .Mac revamp.

Prety lame? It's the lamest upgrade ever. I really though Apple were going to revamp this service after Jobs mentioned they were going to rectify the crapness of .Mac in an interview.

Increase in storage? How about making upload speeds better thatn 2 kbps?

What a joke.

At least they upgraded features that were needed the most, but they could have been a little more creative.

I hope they add more features to .mac once Leopard arrives. It seems they are still delivering much less than what they potentially could. One example of something they could easily implement is auto-sync Safari rss feeds across multiple computers, pc or mac.

Ah, the "benefits" of Web 2.0. That is disappointing to hear. Visual elements of Web 2.0 can be made backwards capable. Bad Apple.

 I just figured that out.. oops.

Well clearly some of us are willing to part with our dollars for a service that Just Works™ and isn't covered in cheesy ads. The fact that they continue the service is proof that I'm not alone in this. Microsoft make it free (and re-coup via ads) for the same reason they bully PC makers into including windows: they want to be the top dog. They want joes like you to use it, so you dont use a competitors. WHY anyone uses hotmail/msn these days is beyond me. if it isn't forced advertisement insertion in your emails, it's blocking messages and emails THEY DONT LIKE.

They also added junk mail support to the .Mac webmail.

I never noticed that you could have a photo tied to your outgoing mail before, but I don't know if that's new, too.

Yeah the JunkMail on webmail was a big thing i was hoping for. the outgoing photo has been there for a while, but it only works for other .mac members

Nice photos :) Great example.. thanks for sharing. How easy was it for you to get this up and going? Why am I asking.. I should just go and do it!
um. you know the example he posted was an Apple example, right?

Why in the wooorld doesn't apple wrap ilife and .mac into one product at $99
and get it over with? .mac doesn't make them annnyyy money at all.

Ah, the "benefits" of Web 2.0. That is disappointing to hear. Visual elements of Web 2.0 can be made backwards capable. Bad Apple.

Yeah. I do some website stuff in my spare time, and for any of the AJAX/Web 2.0 stuff I do, I make sure it works in older browsers. Not too hard, whether it's providing a non-javascript method to do things, or serving a different layout for less capable browsers.

What makes this bad for .Mac is that I can't use this to share my photos. Most of my extended family has aging, rickety hand-me-down PCs that certainly won't handle new snazzy new stuff like this. Even if it would work reasonably well if they downloaded the latest Firefox, I can't expect them to do that - too scary for them (isn't Apple supposed to cater to people like that??). A simple fallback gallery page would be just fine and would ensure that everyone I know could access my photos.

Instead, I still have to do it manually on my own site (which is not so bad for me, but still a waste of my time when iPhoto/.Mac does it faster). Bad Apple, indeed. :(

I think they really need to add online calendar editing - maybe it's something they will add when Leopard comes out, but I doubt it.

Anyone know if you can configure multiple personal domains?

If so, with 10gigs of storage and multiple personal domains.. this new .mac might become my new web hosting.

Don't worry your pretty little head.

argh... we added more space to our .Mac account about 2/3 months back... bah!

I hear that people who upgraded will be getting even more of a bump, so your money isn't totally down the tubes.

As for all these other people complaining about this update being sub-par, I'm just not getting what the issue is. There's nothing else out there that gives you what this gives you in terms of a seamless link between your desktop and all the stuff you want to do on the web. There wasn't before the update, and there dang sure isn't now. And I don't know about you, but Web Gallery looks very cool. Did you check out the live site? Makes Flickr look like a pile of polaroids in a shoebox.

This is what the Mac is all about, kids. And I'm guessing that if you're on this forum, you get it.
