Well clearly some of us are willing to part with our dollars for a service that Just Works™ and isn't covered in cheesy ads. The fact that they continue the service is proof that I'm not alone in this. Microsoft make it free (and re-coup via ads) for the same reason they bully PC makers into including windows: they want to be the top dog. They want joes like you to use it, so you dont use a competitors. WHY anyone uses hotmail/msn these days is beyond me. if it isn't forced advertisement insertion in your emails, it's blocking messages and emails THEY DONT LIKE.

Yeah the JunkMail on webmail was a big thing i was hoping for. the outgoing photo has been there for a while, but it only works for other .mac members

um. you know the example he posted was an Apple example, right?
I so would love to get a .mac account, but currently have level 3 access through Dreamhost, whom give crazy ever growing webspace. If Apple were to match that, they would have a new subscriber in a heartbeat.

All the people who a few years ago had the major complaint about space. Now space is updated and still crying.

No one is forcing you to use or buy this. Apple made iWeb work so you could transfer the sites to any host. Now they have made it even easier in iWeb to do this.

I agree, .mac isn't the end all, be all. It is however nice for those of us who don't want to mess with much. Again, if you don't like it, don't pay for it. I think at 10GB of storage space and the tight integration is better than what it used to be and enough to keep me using it. I do hope to see more but this kept me a member for another year.

I got upgraded to 10 GB by 1:00 PM PDT today.

And the personal domain is nice, I no longer will have to forward my domain to my .Mac address, I can have it be my .Mac account. The only downside I see is that it looks like .Mac doesn't offer domain email, only web. Which is too bad, as I've been using Yahoo's "Personal Address" for my domain, with my website just forwarded to my .Mac address. I want to use .Mac for email, too. (That way I can have IMAP for my domain; other than just on the iPhone, which doesn't even support the use of my personal address through Yahoo's IMAP interface, anyway.)

But... How much storage space do you actually use? I was nearing the 1 GB limit (I had 40 MB to email, 984 MB to web, and only had 40 MB free on my web space,) but can't easily imagine nearing the 10 GB limit. (Although if I start putting more high quality movies on, I could see using a few GB. 10 GB is a ways away, though; and Dreamhost's 300+ GB is ridiculous for my uses.)

Wow, not only does the new web gallery not support Panther's Safari, but it doesn't even have a fallback mode for older browsers. You're just locked out. Pathetic!

My guess is that Apple doesn't want this new online experience to be dumbed down. And how is that any different from anything else they make? The world keeps spinning, whether you upgrade your OS or not.

My personal complaint is my inability to drop my Gallery2 install on my site to use an Apple made widget. I would like to be able to click one button to upload stuff to my current host. I also take advantage of the dumb amounts of web space as a form of a secondary backup location about once a month (takes too dang long to upload gigs of information).

I may try out .mac for a year (get my wife to buy it) and see if it works for me better. Does .mac do ftp (webdav, ssh) access?

looks like you have to upgrade to iLife '08 if you want to use "Web Gallery" seeing as how I just spent $600 on a damn phone you would think I could use iPhoto 6.

Yahoo! 10 GBs

Backing up some of my 1.3 GB home folder now. :)

I bought a Firewire Clamshell iBook back in January of 2001, and the .Mac web service came free with the purchase of the iBook. Apple has been renewing the service for the last :apple:1 :apple:2 :apple:3 :apple:4 :apple:5 :apple:6+ years. And will continue to do so till who knows when. Preferences today informs me my account will expire July 2012, last year it was till 2011, ... Preferences always says six years into the future my .mac account will expire, reminding me how fortunate I am I suppose. Haven't read any posts of others with accounts like this.

And though my .mac account cannot be used for commercial purposes, as things stand now all I wanna say is, Thanks Apple. Very pleased and much obliged to have purchased an Apple computer back then. It's the little things, ya' know?

Sigh, wouldn't it be great if .Mac was actually part of owning a Mac rather than a complete rip-off? It must be the VAST minority of Mac owners that actually use it.

Sorry mate, but i disagree. $99 for 12 months of 10GB storage and piece-of-cake uploading.. isn't a bad deal.

Not everything in the world can be free... and I don't think this is a complete ripoff.

So near and yet so far...

Like others here I'm pleased with the upgrades and tighter integration, but it still annoys me that I can use safari on my iPhone to access my .mac account, bring up my iDisk but not actually look at, say, a pdf file!!

It strikes me that this should be simple and would instantly increase the number of people interested in .mac. Imagine being able to access files as easily as you can now look at photos on your iPhone.

Oh well, keep waiting I suppose and try to remember to email files to myself.

BTW, how come I can look at M$ files on my iPhone (word and excel) but not pages, keynote and numbers? How cool would it be to download a keynote presentation and play it on my iPhone or use some type of accessory to connect to a projector (preferably a wireless dongle on the projector so I can beam it from the iPhone)

 Keeps dreaming of a day when everything works the way I want it to

Domains

any idea if I have to wait to have iLife '08 to use the domains part of .Mac?
I tired to set this up and it an't liking it... lol

Um, I still don't see an upgrade in space even though I got an email saying I would. I'm at 1 GB and it is 7:39 pm EST. :(
Oh wait, the email says by August 14. Bummer!!

Has anyone confirmed or denied that the "use your own domain" works with the new web gallery or not?

I think it's worth the price. Apple Users, IMHO, have been spoiled by freebies in the past so they balk at having to pay now.

I was able to configure it without iLife '08 (although it does say it requires iWeb '08; I have no idea why). My registrar is in the process of changing the CNAME record so I guess I'll see shortly.

I'm having no luck. Hours later I still get the same error. Did you have www.yourdomain already set up before?

A rather lackluster upgrade. Really, .Mac isn't still worth the
CA$139. Offering larger iDisc and photo album doesn't really cut it.... especially when you need to sell out extra $$$ to be able to use the functionality!!!!

Apple are being rather unimaginative. I was hoping for editable iCal calendars, like some one above posted.

If Apple don't improve things I won't be renewing next June.

Apple should really take another look at some of the features offered by the free services and use their magic because they could produce something very good.

Well if some people actually wrote Apple some feedback rather than complain on forums, Apple might actually listen.. :D :p

I was hoping for end-to-end sync solutions for iPhone - calendar, e-mail, and todo, and of course, an iPhone update. Oh well...
