Well, if it is purely a software-enabled new feature, then someone may come up with a hack at some point.

I would imagine this doesn't require new hardware, but I really don't know. Does anyone know for sure?

Now who would want to be able to connect their MacBook to anything without a bulky and very-very expensive adapter?
Why care to check the actual size and price of these adaptors if just plucking statements out of thin air allows one to put others (ie, Apple) down.

There was a thread a long time ago that proved that the MDP DID in fact carry audio. So yes, the older ones do have the ability to carry it. Now we just need someone to figure out how to enable it.

Nice, I connect my laptop to my TV to show slideshows and this would be so much better than having 2 cords. Might see an upgrade coming soon :)

I have the summer 09 13" MacBook Pro and in preparation of getting an HDTV in the next few months I had purchased mDP - HDMI cable and audio to RCA cable from Monoprice to get video and audio. It would be so nice if it would work on the existing DP model macs :D

I posed this question in another thread...can anyone elaborate??

If I understand it correctly, if the port's controller (I'm pretty sure it's the graphics chip) supports audio then it's just a firmware update to tell the controller to pass audio over the specified pins. If the port's controller doesn't support audio, then it's a hardware problem and can only be fixed by purchasing an up to date MBP. Is that what you're asking?

Now you gripers can shut up about getting HDMI ports. I realize you still have to have an adaptor, but how much space would that take up anyway?

oh please, this is only about Apple not wanting to pay HDMI patent fees. otherwise they would join the standard.

Something tells me this is a software update, either that or different tracings on the motherboard.

Any bets on how long it takes someone to email Steve Jobs regarding mdp audio on older uMBPs?

HTML:
<s>DOes anyone know if this is a hardware limitation with the previous gen. macbook pro's not being able to send audio or is it just blocked by the software?</s>

nevermind

We don't know yet, waiting for someone to do a teardown of the software or hardware.

Jesus, please add a firmware update for existing models. And another firmware update for the inertial trackpad scrolling too!

That's great news.

But let the b1tching begin (from those people without the latest MBP)! Perhaps someone can hack the software?

I just added a HDMI monitor to a MacBookPro (5,3) which required a dongle going to the MDP and a USB port to a box with a HDMI port on it, then a HDMI cable to the monitor. The dongle cost half as much as the monitor.

I would be very interested to hear Apple declare conclusively audio support from original MDP offerings either will not or do not support audio, or if some sort of software or firmware update might be forthcoming. It is impossible for me to believe they did not anticipate this when the recently offered MDP as early adopters.

I don't think Jesus is worried about that, but MDP audio plus inertial trackpad scrolling would be great!

I am hoping that there will be a software update by the time I get home to enable this feature on my existing 17" Macbook Pro. I have a mini display port to display port cable from monoprice connected to my 24" Dell monitor. If I could have my speakers always connected to my monitor that would eliminate 1 cable from having to fuss with each time I take the laptop with me.

Convo with Apple

I just spoke with Apple Customer Chat on the Store and she supported that the new MacBook Pros will indeed send audio. She also stated that Apple will be releasing an HDMI adapter that will allow audio to be sent. I did not ask about previous generations of the MacBooks.
