should have just put HDMI ports on it.

then we could actually use it without having to use an adaptor.

Hopefully 10.6.4 will enable it in the older models. The specification was there all along. Maybe we can narrow it down to what specific drivers are included in this build of 10.6.2/3.

I certainly hope Apple thinks our out-of-date Core 2 Duo models are worth updating with the inertia scrolling and audio pass through.

Um, yah? I have one on my 2 year old Studio laptop, its wider but it's thinner than a MiniDisplayPort. :rolleyes:

True. They aren't pretty enough obviously. I'm almost surprised Apple hasn't nixed the Ethernet jack yet like on the Air. :p

Yeah, I still use ethernet to configure networks and troubleshoot stuff though, I can't live without it. But in all honesty, I'm surprised someone hasn't invented a new ethernet plug standard, not really sure why it has to be that large.

Hold on. Could these be the first displayport 1.2 enabled products ?

DisplayPort 1.2 also adds the following new audio enhancements and restrictions:

* Audio copy protection and category codes;
* High-definition audio formats such as Dolby MAT, DTS HD, all Blu-ray formats, and the DRA standard from China; and
* Synchronization assist between audio and video, multiple audio channels, and multiple audio sink devices, using Global Time Code (GTC).

The mDP audio pins must be physically connected to a path to the sound card. :confused: Otherwise, software won't enable it, right???

Right, because it's like saying if you get your power disconnected at your house, a firmware upgrade would take care of it. lol

Jesus, please add a firmware update for existing models. And another firmware update for the inertial trackpad scrolling too!

I have a feeling inertial trackpad scrolling is merely software based, so it will probably come with 10.7, just like 2005 PowerBooks got two finger right click with 10.5, and pre-Unibody multitouch laptops got 4 finger gestures with 10.6.

Hopefully someone will find a workaround before then, though.

Right. But if the audio pins are on the mDP by default (and it sounds like they are) then Apple would have had to just not connect them (for no reason) in order for them to not already be connected to the sound card in older uMBPs.

...which would be like buying an HD TV and hooking it up to the cable box, and just not plugging in the audio cables... FIRMWARE UPDATE PLEASE!

Don’t PC graphics cards output audio over their HDMI ports?

The pins have to be connected to something…

Right, I doubt Apple purposely left pins unsoldered on the port though, we would've found out through teardowns I'm sure.

This is the correct cable for carrying both the audio and the video, correct?

I just got it because I wanted a MDP-to-HDMI cable, assuming it'll only carry the video FROM the computer. I was just going to use a headphone-jack-to-RCA cable for sound.

To my knowledge, although the cable CAN physically carry the signal, the older-than-today's-update MBPs can't output audio to the MDP.

Maybe - and hopefully - I'm wrong.

What about DATA support? Display Port supports a data channel. It would be great if we could use the same keyboard/mouse when connecting laptop to the 27" iMac as a display.

Pins, firmware and stuff...

Hi guys.
I'm wondering;
1) since the audio only applies for the lastest update, is this a hardware thing?
2) Does this mean that one (or some of the pins) in the newest MDP are assigned to audio? And what were these pins doing before?
3) Will the pins assigned to audio in the Monoprice cable (mentioned above) be able to carry this feed, or is the cable outdated?

Hope someone will be able to answer this

best regards
