Your post was riddled with half-truths and outright incorrect statements. But I will reply to only a couple.

First off, displayport is a VESA standard.

Next, check out the Dell e6400 notebook line. Displayport only.

Additionally, the four letters you didn't mention in your post, that seem to get ignored a lot in the HDMI to displayport comparisons: HDCP.

HDMI has it. Displayport does not.

Displayport supports HDCP (in version 1.1)

i love connecting my 13 inch mb pro to a big screen lcdtv. but seriously apple needs to drop a mini dvi to hdmi adapter that sound on it for under 100 bucks. I would jump on that asap.. The combination of adapters is annoying at times...

So will you be able to get sound out of a 24" ACD connected to a MacBook Pro just using the mini DisplayPort without connecting the USB port?

Does the software used to play movies, for example, need to be updated to work with sound over DisplayPort -> HDMI ?

For example does the VLC guys need to update VLC to enable this new feature?

It would be really great to be able to play back HD audio formats for the first time on a Mac... DTS-HD, Dolby TrueHD etc. :)

oh please, this is only about Apple not wanting to pay HDMI patent fees. otherwise they would join the standard.

Or, maybe, just maybe, it's about the fact that these are computers, and not portable video players. Yes, I realize that they make good portable video players, but most people (i.e. not the geeks in MacRumors) use them for computing, so a DisplayPort makes much more sense. Having both increases cost and engineering, so why would they do that just to placate the few that don't want to buy a cable.

Geez, you have to buy an HDMI cable anyway, so why not just buy one with a mini displayport at one end.

No, it should be handled by the OS. You just select your sound output device (which this port should now be listed) and set VLC to play on the external display as you would if you had a regular external display.

Wow, that sounds great!

I can't wait for someone with one of the new MacBook Pro's to try and play a Blu-ray rip with HD audio, and post the results :)

Do you guys really think Apple is going to update our later models., of course not they now have another reason to get you all to upgrade.

So i'm a long time PC user and will be buying a MacBook Pro (will install Win7 on it.)

The reason i'm buying a MacBook Pro is cause the hardware is much nicer than most Windows based laptops. There are a few competitors, such as, HP Envy and Dell Adamo, but nothing gives me a good combination of features (well the ones I need) in one package except Apple.

With that being said, I spent a lot of time in PC forums trying to see which laptop was good for me, and people there complain less than people here.

Looks like Apple has a hardcore following, but these hard core followers quickly turn into hardcore whiners too.

I guess it's good and bad for Apple.
Consumers are always on Apple's case for giving them dated technology or not giving them certain ports etc etc, yet they are still willing to pay a premium to purchase the things they complain about.

Well done Apple!

Have you seen the SIZE of an HDMI Port?

Size? What the difference if if you have to lug around an adapter anyway?

HDMI or mini-HDMI?

information correct?

Hi. I just checked with Apple over the chat system and they said the new Macbook Pros do NOT support audio over the display port connector. So the information supported by arstechnica may be incorrect.
In the end they don't seem to have much support for it, just that now apple claims that you can connect to HDMI via an adapter, but it may be that they are referring only to video.

One of the posts I read earlier in this thread said that someone at Apple Care confirmed that it DID support sound.

The dell studio xps 16 competes with the 15" MBP. the dell adamo competes with the macbook air.

I meant from a Unibody aluminum prespective. The ENVY and Adamo i believe are both Aluminum unibody computer.

The XPS is really nice. A good powerful computer, but looks so "plastic".

Have to admit, the MacBook Pros look really sexy.

I just spoke with Apple Customer Chat on the Store and she supported that the new MacBook Pros will indeed send audio. She also stated that Apple will be releasing an HDMI adapter that will allow audio to be sent. I did not ask about previous generations of the MacBooks.

Talk about pot, kettle, black. Displayport DOES have HDCP, and has done since iteration 1.1, unless Wikipedia is wrong.

The studio xps 16 has a magnesium chassis.

Could you quote the post? I couldn't find it

This is the post...

I also called the apple store today, and asked a bunch of questions. The sales rep even called an apple systems engineer to get firm answers. The new MBP of all sizes support audio over the MDP now. None of the other Macs with MDP support audio over them currently.

Regarding the MBP an apple engineer said that audio could be sent over the MDP in what ever format the source was. So if you have surround sound in your source, like your playing a dvd, you should get surround sound through hdmi. No further info if this includes 7.1 or DTS-HD.

The engineer wouldn't comment about a future update to the firmware or OS regarding older Mac's with the MDP, because "information on this subject has not been released yet," and wouldn't even say if it was possible or not with the older hardware.

Hope this helps clear up some of the questions people have had, even though the big one still is out there.

So what's the verdict, did anyone try it out or should I take my monoprice mini-dp to hdmi cable to the Apple store to try it out, they have TV's there that Apple TV is hooked up to.

Firstly you should do it because it is the right thing to do to settle the issue. When it does not transmit audio, ask one of the geeks there if Apple will make a utility to activate audio, or if some API exists for a smart programmer to do the same. Their whole objection seems to surround triggering HDMI license fees which does not happen if a third party makes the enabling utility.

For the longest time Apple did not make good audio features on their computers due to their agreement with Macintosh Audio to not compete with them.
