Why the Quicktime update always requires a restart? Shoot!

Quicktime isn't just the player. The player is just a frontend to give you control of playing media files. The backend is much more interesting. All of the quartz graphics rendering is done by quicktime. That means that animations like minimizing a window is done by quicktime. Because of this, the backend is always running and you need to stop it, overwrite it and then restart it. The way to do it is by requiring a restart.

Why can't they just roll it all up into 10.5.2?

I think this is part of 10.5.2. Just like the iLife/iWork updates. They are just releasing them in parts so the download size is smaller on the offical "10.5.2" update.

Basically rolling it out in chunks.

If this is true...

This fixes the After Effects issues for anyone effected

Oh, boy oh boy oh boy! I haven't been able to scrub with sound in AE since I "upgraded" to QT 7.4, I think it was... or was it 7.3? At any rate, well over a year. Hopefully this is one of the issues you are referring to!

really?? i didn't know anyone was a fan of QT, let alone a huge fan. it's a strange program, really. all the really good functionalities only come with adding perian and flip4mac...and its exporting is so slow that it's practically useless in that function. and it's the source of a lot of security problems...what's so great about QT again?

Sorry for the late response. Was working like a mad man today...

I'm a huge movie trailer buff and watch trailers over and over every day. QT is obviously the best source to watch them in. Second would be flip4mac. Use the conversion tool all the time at work. It's just great to have as a second exporting tool other than Final Cut. Also, the ability to export numerous videos at once. :D

wow-thanks! I can see clearly now why a restart is needed-always wondered why- a little bit

My AE 6 is still broken

Just updated; 58-some MB... and still no AE scrubbing for me. :( Maybe it's not a QT issue... but it worked until I updated lo these many moons ago... ugh. Hopefully it'll be squared when I get CS3.

QuickTime Pro is a very good app as well. It's so bloody useful.

well, if it fixes the sub issue with perian, mkv, etc, then i'll happily update.

once again: more bitching and whining about no 10.5.2... people don't grow up do they.

After installing this my 24" alu-imac has frozen 4 times!

What is going on!? My machine never has had any problems until I installed this update!

Is there anyway to downgrade/uninstall it?

AFAIK, you would have to do an archive/re-install of OS X. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

always good to see, does anyone even use panther anymore?

Hehe.
One of my Macs (G4 500) is "stuck" in 10.3.8 since Digidesign ceased support of their Digi001. That rig has been rock solid.
Admittedly, after working in Leopard all day, Panther does seem a bit dated...

sigh, still no ac3 sound in my mpeg2 dvd rips......and yes i know about the ac52 codec. i use perian (actually 1.1b svn). i undertand that its pass through, but i dont want to go through a receiver. i just want qt to play them just like vlc does on my MBP.

i hate having so much redundant software, if apple ever fixed this ac3 issue, i could get rid of 1 more program and actually use front row when im on my 24" monitor

Cool! It seems that 10.5.2 will be changing major things after all. Almost all apple's software have been updated throughout this and last week.

Cool?

If Apple has to fix all of its software to run on 10.5.2, does that not imply that there's a good chance that 10.5.2 is going to break a lot of other software?

It would turn 10.5.2 into a "train wreck" if you have to update lots of third party software because Apple can't make a point update to OSX compatible with the previous version.

All of these "Improves compatibility with OSX" fixes are not a good sign.

Help!!!

I need help. My computer was running fine. I installed the quicktime update.... now when booting my mac goes to a black screen after the apple logo comes on and sits there for about 30 min or so then boots up. The first time it did it after the update I assumed it had to do with the install. But no, now it dose it every time I reboot.

Any ideas...

how about Flash support? Any chance that they've re-enabled it? PLEASE OH PLEASE GOD SAY YES - I need flash tracks back in QT ASAP.

Could someone check the prefs and let us know whether Flash enabled is back?

You'd be surprised. Folks with older hardware (iBook G3s, CRT iMacs, etc.) may keep using Panther forever if it does everything they need. :)

Heck, I'm still using 10.2 on one machine.

That's assuming apple HAS to update apps for the new OS, we don't know that's the case.
