I might pick up a refurb MBP instead. I really do not like not being able to upgrade the RAM and storage myself down the road. That really irks me since I've been able to extend the life of my previous Macs by upgrading the RAM and storage. If Apple didn't charge outrageous prices for RAM upgrades then it might be less of an issue. $200 to upgrade RAM from 8GB to 16GB?? SMH. The part probably costs them $40, if that.

That's a bargain compared to the poor iPad 64gb-128gb buyers paying an extra $200-$300 on $20-$30 worth of extra flash memory.

I've seen a lot of comments to this effect, and honestly, I don't understand the logic. What can you upgrade on a laptop? Not the processor, because that requires a new motherboard. Not the graphics card, because there's no room for it. Without those two, there goes about 95% of any potential performance upgrade.

So what you're left with is RAM and hard drive. Unless your RAM is less than 4 gb, you're unlikely to get any noticeable performance boost by upgrading. Your processor and graphics card will be the limiting factor instead. So, you're left with the hard drive. What are you guys putting on your hard drives that you need several hundred gigabytes worth? If you have thousands of movies or something ridiculous like that, then invest in an external HD. Otherwise, you can probably delete half of that crap that you aren't using. Or move it to an external HD, or even the cloud.

If you are one of those guys sitting there with 2Gb of RAM and a tiny hard drive, everything else in your laptop is probably also out of date. So you really need to just pony up and buy a new one. If any of you guys can't afford to buy a new laptop every 4 years, then you probably shouldn't be buying Apple products to begin with.

Anyway, that's my thinking on the topic. I understand the desire to tinker with things and want to make them better, but honestly guys, just buy a desktop for that. I agree with Apple on this, I don't want to buy a laptop that is 20% thicker/heavier just so a few guys can make upgrades that aren't going to do them any good anyway.

Why should I have to carry around externals when I can just have more local storage to keep everything. I have a lot of music and I work with audio which in it's uncompressed state takes up quite a bit of room, as well as having videos/photos available. I also run windows on my laptop which eats up a ton of space. So, honestly. I will take the largest internal storage I can get. The SSD's are too pricey at the capacities that I am comfortable with. I wish that the loss of the DVD drive led to an SSD and a hard drive bay so I could have the speed of the SSD and the storage of a hard drive all in my one laptop. Thankfully I saw this coming a mile away and purchased a fully loaded 15" non retina pro back in January. The only thing I wish this laptop had is the retina display, but I value the upgradability more (including the ability to replace the battery when it gets old).

where the hell is the 13" rMBP QUAD?

Sorry Apple, I want the compact form factor but I don't want to have to buy another dual core that won't satisfy the performance needs for desktop photo and video editing!

Been waiting for that for three years now. Not gonna spend my money on something I won't be satisfied with!

Ask the poor saps who paid crazy money to upgrade to the then top-of-the-line 768gb SSD model on last year's rMBP15 and that they're only getting approx $200 more now on fleabay compared to the 512gb models. The base models always have the best resale value percentages. The optioned out 'ultimate' models always depreciate the most.

The custom ones always depreciate faster. However if its meets your needs then resale value should be further down the list of priorities. Also if by getting the bigger SSD you save yourself an upgrade cycle you could still come out ahead.

No need for a disc drive. I can just buy this baby and an external drive to for when I need one. :D

if you take a look at the thermal envelopes for the quad processors you'll notice that in the 13" formfactor and wattage that they can't actually support quad core chips right now

So (probably) a stupid question, but is the new Iris pro 5100 graphics better than the dedicated graphics offered on the last generation equivalent base 15" Macbook Pro Retina?

If so, by how much roughly? Thanks for your help in advance!

No. It's a downgrade by about 8% based on this:

I really don't like the direction apple is going. Usable features shouldn't always take a back seat to thinness.

That's just not true. If I recall correctly, there are 35W Haswell quads and the first unibody 13" had 35W chips in them.

I can't believe they took out the dedicated card on the 15" lower end. Who the hell wants to pay $2k for that without one?! god apple, stop deepening your pockets...

About the 15" mbpr.. How much in performance will 0,3 ghz actually do? I Work in Adobe CS, Aperture, Maya daily...

Thanks! :)

13" rMBP: Is there a big difference between 2,6 GHz Core i5 and 2,8 GHz Core i7 regarding performance and batterlife? It's the only choice I have to make before ordering. I read some people had batterylife problems with i7 and that the performance is not much higher?!

Didn't Apple release a new iLife today?
It shows the new rMBp is still shipping with iLife '11.

Ssd...

So, SSD all the way, except for the lone 13" holdover model. I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I hate not having the option of a HDD at this time. I would much rather get a larger capacity HDD for way less money. I can live without the SDD speed at the current prices. $2000 as the base price for a 15" is hard to swallow, regardless of all the awesomeness included. I want to go to 15" for my next Macbook, but my 13" Blackbook hasn't shown any signs of slowing down, and at these prices, I think I'm just going to have to wait it out.

ok definitely not true right:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haswell_(microarchitecture)

i don't think you recalled correctly.

LOL, you post a link that proofs my point! No offense, but have you actually looked closely?
The 4702MQ and 4702HQ have a max TDP of 37W.
Now go to Apple's website and check out the top of the line 13" models now. Core i7 with Iris graphics. Look for the lowest TDP chip that you find and you'll see that those actually have HIGHER TDPs than the most energy efficient quads.

now where am I wrong here? They just didn't bother to put a quad in!

edit:
the i7 they use might be the 4558U, intel gives that a 28W TDP

Can't complain too much. In 2011 i paid £1674 for a SB MBP with HR/AG screen, 8GB o RAM, and 500GB 7.2k RPM drive.

For roughly £200 extra i'll get a faster, cooler, CPU/GPU, Retina display, 16GB o RAM, and PCIe Flash storage.

it is the 4558U. and case closed, you were incorrect.
