I am trying to decide whether to get the 8+ or X and it might come down to a game time decision. Does anyone know if they do a credit pull when you get preapproved? I want to get pre approved just in case I decide to get the 8+, but dont want a hard pull on my record if I change my mind and decide to go with the X.

Thanks!

I'm sure they do a soft pull upon pre-approval. They'd have to check some how to see if you are approved or not.

Are you currently on IUP? As the pre-approval only works for those who are currently enrolled and eligible. Not for new customers signing up. Plus if you are signing up as a new customer, it is a hard pull.

I am on AuP now. I just don’t want them to ding my credit twice if I decide to not get the 8+.

What is the difference between a soft pull and hard?

Soft pull just looks at the score you have it doesn't appear on your credit report. Where as a hard pull does show up as an inquiry on your credit report.

I'm a current IUP customer. I sincerely hope Citizens One isn't going to do an HP again.

It makes sense for new customers, but it's pretty unreasonable for existing customers, seeing as they can get the same info from a soft pull from us.

I thought if you have a current account in good standing they will pre approve just on that.

Thats how it was for me last year (my second year of IUP). No hard pull. Many others had a similar situation.

Someone who is grabbing the 8 should see if their score was dinged when they went through the pre-approval process. There's always the chance that Citizens One could be up to some nonsense.

I think that would help a lot.

I honestly didn't pay attention last year lol. It was my second year too.

I haven't seen anything come in on my credit report yet for my 8Plus pre-approval. Might take a day or two.

Pulled my credit report due to equifax fiasco and saw citizens doing soft pull every month for iup. So hoping there is no hard pull.

I want to do the financing for the iPhone X, but have not been enrolled in Apple financing before. I also want to freeze my credit reports. Can I sign up now, get approved, freeze the Equifax, Experian and Transunion reports and then do the preorder on 10/27? Will the soft pull happen on 10/27? Will it be declined if I freeze my reports before then?

I called Citizens One and Apple. Citizens One uses the Equifax report so you are safe to freeze Transunion and Experian reports. You can either keep your Equifax report open until October 27th or freeze it now for free and unfreeze it just prior to October 27th to preorder iPhone X with Apple Financing option. It is not possible according to Apple to go through the credit approval process unless the product is available for sale on their site.

If I get preapproved for the X on preorder date do i have to do any additional steps? I want to get my order through as quick as possible.

Nope we shouldn't have to. Antonio, the Apple rep just told me that once we preorder and the IUP credit check goes through Citizens One Bank we are set.

I'm really concerned about the Equifax hack, so I think I am going to freeze all three creditor reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian and Transunion) credit reports ASAP, then un-freeze my Equifax report on 10/26 and hope my preorder for the X goes through with the financing application.

Should I worry about the hack?

Just went through everything with the 8 for my wife. Its so easy i was shocked. once you get pre approval the apple store is literally all setup with the exact model etc you want, you literally just hit confirm order once pre orders open. Then it goes through and you are back to sleep in less than 1 minute. Im still shocked at how easy it was compared to other years.

Any issues with credit are going to come up in the pre-approval, which is well before pre-order so you can clear it up.

Its a small nod Apple is giving to IUP customers, but it makes it so much better not to have to go through 5 pages and hope none of them fail to load like other times.

Kudos to Apple on this one.

You cannot do a pre-approval for IUP with the iPhone X preorder. Apple confirmed with me over the phone I have to wait for the iPhone X preorder window to open on October 27th. Sucks for those of us not already enrolled in the IUP and that their site won't initiate the pre-approval because the iPhone X is not yet for sale (the button to add to cart is greyed-out\not-yet-available)

Yes you should. If you were one of the identities stolen in the breach the hacker can open up 6 dozen lines of credit in your name. Then you (or a company you hire and pay $$$ to) has to spend years proving you are who you say you are and didn't open all those lines of credit. The safest thing is to freeze your credit report for each of the three main credit reporting agencies. The catch-22 is that if you currently are not enrolled in the IUP and want to preorder an iPhone X; and you freeze your Equifax report you will be denied Apple Financing on October 27th. You have to leave your Equifax credit report NOT frozen or unfreeze it prior to 10/27. It costs $10 every time you free\unfreeze your credit reports.

Should I be applying for preapproval now if I'm ordering the X, or should I wait till that week?

I thought preapproval was only for 8 now.

I wasn't identified and
This is first time doing Apple upgrade

We probably won't be able to do the pre approval for the X till the middle/end of next month if they follow the same process with the 8.

That makes sense. Credit pulls (at least for mortgages) are only good for 30 days. This may be similar.

Also, even though it’s not a reservation system I can believe Apple is using the data collected in preapproval to allocate stock correctly for non IUP orders / store stock. Which is probably why there was a hard cut off for preapprovals. Still doesn’t guarantee launch shipment (if there are no phones, there are no phones) but certainly would help expedite the back end.

I totally agree! It was the easiest preorder ever. I started refreshing at 2:55 eastern and at 3:01 app opened and I was done ordering my 8+ in a few seconds. Confirm email says 3:02 am eastern! Went right back to sleep. Best launch ever!

Anyone know how it works for 2 phones? Currently I have 2 phones (loans) and will be upgrading both to the iPhone X when pre-order starts for that phone.

i got preapproved for 8 plus but now changed my mind to get X. i hope i dont have to go through the approval process again!

Yes, of course, if you aren't a member of the IUP program yet, you'll have to go through the initial process as I did for the iphone 7. Pre approval is a perk for those who already signed up. The iphone X pre approval should open a few days before as per an Apple rep i talked to.

You will unfortunately, it says right on the pre approval confirm page if you change even the model of the same phone, you'll have to go through the process again the night of pre-orders, you cannot do it before any longer.

Just make sure to get pre approval using both phone's Apple store Apps, then the night of, simply open the apple store app and hit confirm on each phone.
