Should have gone with the first option.

Wonder if I can call Apple and change the payment.

If the Apple Care deal is the better one, I can call Apple and see if I can change the Upgrade Plan to the one with Apple Care (if that is all possible)
When did you get your phone?

What phone did you purchase (type and storage)?

Did you use the iPhone UPGRADE program or the iPhone INSTALLMENT program? (I do not believe there is a way to switch...)

I preordered the iPhone 7 128GB

Selected the second choice. The lower cost plan without Apple Care.

I had *thought* it was the Apple Upgrade Program.

Here is what appears in my confirmation email:

Payment Details

Your credit card will be charged two separate transactions.
1) Any applicable shipping costs and sales tax will be paid to Apple. Sales tax will be calculated based on the full price of iPhone and on any other items in your order.
2) Your first monthly installment will be paid to Citizens One. After that, your credit card will be charged every month by Citizens One.

OK, I enrolled in the AUP last year and have made 12 payments and am eligible to upgrade. My carrier is Verizon. But everytime I clicked the button to Reserve To Upgrade In Store, I got a "Page Not Found." I tried for 2.5 hours last night, and another 2 hours this morning. Finally I got in at 0830 PST, and all the 7+ Jet Black 128 GB were sold out. What do I do now? When should I check back in on the upgrade page? Or would I have better luck just walking into my Apple Store?

I'd keep checking on the app and get an appointment when it's available. Path of least resistance and least stress. However, it's also the path that requires the most patience.

So I looked at the Apple Upgrade program when I went to order on their website - looks like a no-brainer compared to ATT Next. BUT!!!!

On my ATT plan, each line has an "Access for iPhone 4G LTE with visual voicemail" charge of $40.00. If the phone is on ATT Next, they then apply a "discount for access" of -$25.00. So it is MUCH cheaper to do ATT Next than finance through Apple. ATT Next is costing me $51 per month, Apple Upgrade is $81 per month. Never explained on Apple's ordering process on their website.

Your phone costs $749. That cost over 24 months is $31.20 per month. If you do the upgrade plan, the overall cost is $878 for a monthly charge of $36.58 per month.

Couldn't see your pics...

BigDog,

Actually, it's the iPhone 7 Plus 128 GB.

That's my bad.

So the $900+ is accurate.

So, with the plan without Apple Care am I making out if I pay it off in a year and join the Upgrade plan again next year?

Not true. I have the AUP plan. I get a "discount for access" of $25 as well. When you use the Apple plan, it's treated as if you're bringing your own unlocked device to use at AT&T. The $40 line fee is for those on contract.

I don't know about how you'll make out (I assume you'll sell to upgrade), but if you do sign up for the upgrade plan next year, you can't trade in your 7 Plus to get the new one. You'd be signing up for a brand new loan for the 8.

Ultimately, that's what I'll be doing as well when I upgrade later. I will be trading in my 6s...and Apple will payoff the loan on my trade since I've paid 12 months of the phone...and they keep the phone. I then get a new loan on the new phone and have a new 24 month payment plan with AppleCare+. I like this so I don't have to sell every year...I simply trade and get a new phone.

I got onto the Apple Store app at 12:09am and was really bummed to see that the black iPhone 7 Plus was already "sold out" in both Apple Stores in my area.

You can pay off the loan at any time. It's a loan through Citizen's One...and there's no pre-payment penalty.

You are paying the price of that phone AND for two years of AppleCare+. So your monthly payment is that cost combined spread out over 24 months.

Once you have made 12 payments on your plan, you are eligible to upgrade without any further cost to you. If you would like to upgrade early, you can do so after 6 months...but you must pay the rest of the payments that you have to get you to a 12 month total, or half of the phone cost.

Phones on contract can cost around $300 (depends on the carrier), but when you're on contract, you usually have a larger access fee with your line. For instance. My plan with AT&T is $100 per month. I have two iPhones that are on the Apple plan and I pay $15 per line to access my account for a total of $130 per month. If I did a contract with AT&T...my plan would still be $100 per month, but my access fee per line goes up to $40 per month for a total of $180 per month. I would also pay the $300 (or more) up front to get my new phone. It FEELS like you're only paying $300 for the phone...but with the added access per line, YOU are still paying for your phone.

I pay roughly $200 per month for our phones and service...and I paid NOTHING out of pocket up front (except taxes).

Hope that helps a bit.

Great explanation, thanks for taking the time to explain it.

Okay, I think I got this....

The Apple Upgrade Plan with Apple Care does not allow you to own the phone after 1 year. You are essentially rolling the payments over to a trade-in. So a $900+ phone is just a reload year after year.

The Upgrade Plan without the Apple Care essentially has you owning the phone after a year so you can sell it and get money back. You then have to start an entirely new Upgrade plan.

So...how did I do with that?

Same here. 7Plus black and JB seem in short supply. I wonder how long will it be for us IUP people to wait to upgrade. The longer we wait the more we pay on our existing phones which will be turned in.

It wasn't too bad upgrading from last years AUP. Other than not being able to get the 7+in black I preferred I still managed to get a reservation for 9am launch for silver 128 7+. I was ready at 3:00am EDT and the app didnt go live until a minute or 2 later and all the blacks were gone. Hopefully next year they'll come out with some other crazy color to take pressure off the blacks and have ship to home option instead of the in store process.
Basically what happened to me. I got gold vs. Silver. And 128 vs. 256 gb. Not a huge deal and hoping that they have stock for walk in's that they will let me swap for what I have reserved since technically those would be first come first served. Who knows though?

OK so I think there is a bit of confusion here. So the price of the phone is $900. No matter which plan you get, or if you buy it with no payment plan (just pay $900 today) that won't change. These are the options

- One time payment of $900 and done, you own the phone. No monthly payments.
- Apple Upgrade Plan - First month down, 23 additional payments until you pay off the $900 plus the AppleCare+ cost
- Apple Financing - First month down*, 23 payments until you pay off the $900.

*I'm guess on that based on how the upgrade plan works, correct me if I'm wrong.

None of these plans includes the price of the upgrade phone. With the Apple Upgrade plan you can upgrade at 12 months, but you have to trade in your iPhone 7* or pay off the remaining 12 payments at once. When you upgrade to the 7s or whatever it will be next year you start another 24 payment cycle on the new phone.

If you pay off the Apple Upgrade plan immediately, your next phone won't be free. At best in a year you might be able to trade in your iPhone 7 and only need 12 more payments on the new phone but you would need to talk to Apple about that. If you want to just pay it off right away, there is no reason to finance it at all, you're better off buying it outright since you won't get the hard credit query.

So excluding the price of the included AppleCare+ you will be paying $900 for the phone no matter which way you choose to go. The benefit in the Apple Upgrade plan is that you don't need to deal with paying off the device at 12 months and selling it yourself.

*When you trade in your phone Apple is essentially buying it back from you, and using the money to pay off the remaining 12 payments.

Yeah, I should have just opted to pay it off in full immediately.

No harm done. It will look good on a credit report.

I couldn't get either black 7+ right at the open of the store app so I eventually settled for the silver 128 7+ reservation. I'm hoping once I'm there I may be able to get one of the blacks if they have one. If not I'll get my first white phone!:D

I think people get confused with this fact. As long as you are paying full price from someone, the carrier or apple, you won't be paying the full access fee price. If you are on a contract then it's $40, otherwise it's $15. Either you subsidize the price over the contract term, or pay full price for the phone. The math workouts the same. I just like the thought of being able to upgrade in 12 months if I choose. (basically just leasing the phone, unless I pay for it all by the 12th month)

Wanted to get a Plus 256 on this plan. Tried calling Apple with question, but couldn't get through - is it possible to do this program even though I am on Cricket ? It seemed like you have to be on one of the big 4 carriers to do it.

So wait, if you are existing Apple Upgrade user and chose to upgrade in 12 months, it is based on the inventory that is around in your area? You have to go to a store and turn yours in and pick up the new one? I was told that I would order the new (and be shipped, no pick up at store), and then turn in the old phone at later date or be charged the remaining balance.

Are all of you who are already part of this program having to go into the store?

That is correct. The shipping option was incorrect information from imaginative reps. Imagine that...

Also a new Apple Upgrade Program user here. I'm discouraged by the problems that existing AUP users are having, but I plan to beat Apple at their own game next year if necessary. I can always pay it off and sell it after one year, and find another means to get the new iPhone for launch day delivery. I was going to pay full price upfront anyway.
