So I upgrade every year and the Apple upgrade program made it even easier. Anyone notice the "early upgrade payment"? Maybe it's part of their plan to shift release day a little earlier each time so they can charge this additional payment.

Guess you could wait a month (since the last release was in October) to avoid this fee. Doubt the yearly upgrade people want to do that though. I don't. Just a little annoyed since I'm sure my carrier will charge another upgrade fee.

That payment was because the iPhone 12 was a month later than normal last year.

It happened when the iPhone X was delayed by a couple of months when it was released.

It happens.

At least you got your order in. Apple is saying my Apple Card is not allowing authorization, even though I have plenty of room on the Apple Card and pay the damn thing off every month. I have never had an issue with this before and Apple has just lost a sale (not that my sale will hurt them at all). I am just frustrated with this year's upgrade process.

Ah bad luck with the Apple Card. It looks like it's happening to most if not all who tried to purchase with it.

I had the same issue and was about to contact Citizens One - i checked last years order and didn't see the fee applied. I would've thought Apple would waive the fee since we're part of their yearly upgrade program, regardless of when they release it Don't have the energy to call and ask knowing I probably will get the "well its technically an early upgrade since you're not due until Oct 23rd".

This is truly dirty of Apple. So am I in the twilight zone or did Apple not release the 12 Pro Max on Nov 6, 2020?? The reason why I’m Asking. I just pre-ordered the iPhone 13 Pro Max today, Sept. 17,2021 (yes 2 months early, but not my fault Apple pushed the release back) and just got an email showing I had to pay and extra 61.16 for and early upgrade fee!?? Why should I have to pay for an upgrade fee when Apple pushed back the 12 Pro Max Launch???

The crazy thing is. No one at Apple can answer this and the answer I get is some type of cop out robotic answer of you have to wait 12 months!!??

So your are telling me that those that waited for the 12 Pro Max will have to wait until November 2021 to get the new 13 Pro Max or pay an early upgrade fee?? That’s dirty business.
It's pretty simple really, you're on the IUP which requires 12 payments. Whatever is left of those 12 month payments will be charged so you can upgrade. That's how it works with any upgrade program. Apple, AT&T, Verizon. It's not dirty, it's pretty normal. Do you think you shouldn't have to pay it for some reason? 🤨

Well you took the phone contact out on Nov 6th for 12 months, so it's not unreasonable to expect you to pay the amount you signed up for if you are wanting to upgrade well before that 12 month contract is complete.

All went seamless for me with doing the 0% installment plan on my Apple Card. Did the pre-registration yesterday when changing from the PM to the pro, selected Apple Card payments, they authorized my card for the sales tax, saved my order and then this morning completed the preorder and did checkout in 30 seconds.

I was also able to use my Apple card for IUP, but I did the in store pick up and I didn't get a pre-auth charge. I'm guessing it won't charge me until I pick up.

yes. we shouldn't have to pay it. the spirit of the program was to let folks get a new device on launch every year. while this might technically be citizens one's agreement, it's Apple's program. We expect better of Apple because we pay a premium for their products AND customer experience. But maybe this is the final excuse I've been looking for to bail on this problematic upgrade program. It was a great idea, but with the exception of last year, it has been mostly a fuster cluck and terrible customer experience.

It's not a "fee". The agreement is that you can upgrade your phone after 12 payments, at which point the remaining 12 payments will be forgiven with the turn-in of the functioning phone. There was never any agreement that the new model wouldn't come out until more than 12 months after the last one. In order to upgrade, you have to pay 12 payments, it's that simple.

I get that people love to side with big business but people are understandably upset. Last year people ended up paying extra for the pro phones because they were delayed and now they are paying more because they are earlier than last year. But for me the alternative of following last years rollout and releasing the Pro Max phone would not be an outcome I would have liked. So we just got screwed. But I’m not in this group because I sold my phone and purchased a regular iPhone started the return process 13 days out and then returned around the 28th day. Lol. They were not going to screw me that much over.

Sensing so much entitlement itt. You took out a 24 month finance contract. After 12 payments and return of the device, the loan is forgiven. Don’t be so thick. At least it’s not as bad as AT&T’s program, it’s 30 months. Anyone had to cough up an additional 5 months of payments today to upgrade. This years is 36 months, so upgraders next year with have to fork over 8 months of payments.

It's bollux - last year we paid an extra month because the phone was delayed. this year we pay an extra month because it's on time and we are "upgrading early". Nonsense.

If that’s the worst thing that’s happened to you in the last year, you should be thanking your lucky stars. Take a look around you, man.

No one is making light of what everyone has been going through, but I see what your trying to do here. We can multitask and understand the situation but still not be to pleased with it. It’s sad that you can’t even vent anymore without peoples acrimonious judgement. Like I said previously I found my own work around to remedy the situation.

Well sure it's a 24-month contract. 12 payments and return the phone, got it. However if the idea is to allow us to upgrade yearly, why hit us with the extra payment? Do I get to keep the phone an extra month? I don't think so.

Your "AT&T is shafting its customers even worse so be grateful" point has been received and discarded like a turd sinking to the bottom of a lake.

How dare he talk about iPhone payments on macrumors instead of lamenting the plight of starving children and people dying in the world. But yeah, it's been a crappy year for most. I hope you're doing alright.

This right here. It is not realistic at all to expect that iPhone will be released every single year at the same time ESPECIALLY after the crazy year of last year. The iPhone X came out in November. The XS came out in September. If you don't like that things can change the IUP program might not be a good fit for you.

If apple wants to take that position it should change the marketing language so it’s not a yesly upgrade program
apple gets sued for far less so I expect this latest apple bullsh%it is no exception

Marketing language is crystal clear. "You’re eligible to upgrade to a new iPhone once you’ve made 12 payments. Just trade in your current iPhone and start a new plan.³ It’s that easy."

If anyone is under the impression that iPhones release the same exact month every year then 60 seconds of research can reveal that's not the case.

you not coincidently forgot the first sentence which is “get a new iPhone every year” which is the header and the point of the program
and yes you are exactly right it says get a new iPhone after 12 payments yet last year we had to make 13 and received no compensation for it.

in fact we were asked to make a double payment this year because we were upgrading early
apple beached its own contract

Yes. Every year. Not “on launch day”

Apple has done nothing wrong.
