I have a brother in law who works for a very large defense contractor's software division as a programmer. Although he makes good money, it's not in the $200 thousand plus range. But a lot of the younger programmers who he works with do bounce over to Hi-Tech companies. They make a lot of money, but have absolutely no free time and also have ridiculous deadlines. When these programmers burn out at the high paying job- typically 18 months or so- they frequently re-apply at the defense company. Since they usually still have their security clearance, and they are familiar with the companies operations, they get back on with their seniority and benefits restored. They sign a mandatory work agreement (3-5 years) and then may bounce back out. My B-I-L has worked there for 25 plus years, and knows 4 or 5 people who did that 2 or 3 times. Eventually most of these programmers find a higher paying job, but not as high as Silicon Valley- that doesn't burn them out in less than 2 years and go there. Or they stay with the defense company. It's a lot more stable with fewer, but not zero, ego battles and better benefits, especially in regards to vacations, which you can actually take.

The most scariest part of this message is Java 8. They've revealed a key component of how things work behind the scenes. Won't be long before it's exploited.

The java 8 bit is a rouse of course. They are looking for the skills.

Siri, iCloud, maps, services... haven't you seen what's already possible on the other side? Even bixby does a better job then Siri already. Google maps beats Apple maps in every way as does google now.
Free axis Flyover is much more useful and practical than Streetview.

Does Bixby speak and understand 20 Languages and even more dialects, ......guess not.

Apple Maps has the same quality in the country you are in as Google.

Apple Maps doesn't even have the same quality as Google Maps in New York City. Last week it sent me to the wrong addresses on three occasions after typing in the names of restaurants. It might give you comparable results if you look up and type the exact address, but what's the point then?

Also maybe Siri speaks 20 languages, but contrary to Google Assistant, it does only one at a time. If you have to use foreign words in the same sentence you are speaking in your native language you are out of luck. It isn't that great in plain Spanish either.

So yeah, I also believe they still have a lot of catch up work to do.

Exactly, this is why software developers are not told what skills they need before getting a job and everyone just crosses their fingers and hopes! /s

Haphazard way to go about recruiting.

How likely is it that a really good, productive candidate will waste time rummaging around the internet looking for a secret job advert?

OTOH, candidates who do stumble across the advert...

They'll need at least 3000 very talented programmers to catch-up with their competitors.

You can't have 9 women make a baby in one month. What makes you think Apple can hire more people to catch up with the competition?

they have enough "Open Space" in their new HQ ... that should not be a problem ...

Except that open space is a problem ... Open spaces work well for people in HR, marketing, and design, not engineers and developers.

Apple maps gets me to where I need to go. So it doesn't matter how much better google maps is, I will still default to Apple maps on my iPhone.
...

You say that like it was your choice. It is iOS that is defaulting to Apple maps as the map app.

I was wondering the same thing. Why on earth develop more stuff in Java? Probably evolving a dated application whose code base was already in Java.

I know what's possible, and the reality is that third party services will always lose out to apple's ability to integrate their hardware, software and services together.
Well till today they've done a poor job doing so.

Bixby is not better than siri, you are either exaggerating or simply hate Apple products . Google maps and Google assistant are better and that's a fact.
They've put Siri, bixby and Google now on different tests (look at YouTube). Siri is good at one thing: finishing last in all tests

I use streetview many times to find a shop. But fly-over is nice too... don't understand the practicum needs of fly-over, but like it. Only 3 cities are supported over here while all the streets have streetview in Google maps

I think you guys are incorrectly conflating Java in the web browser with Java as a server platform. Java on the web is indeed a big bag of hurt, and is thankfully mostly dead (so be sure to go through its pockets...).

Server-based Java is everywhere.

There's little *wrong with Apple Maps in the Netherlands.
As if Google is *faultless!

That Java is everywhere on servers does not mean it doesn't suck, Windows is everywhere too-does it not suck?!

Disclaimer: I know nothing about Java on Server software.
