If there is one thing that Apple doesn't care about then it is their share price. Apple's goals are in this order: (1) Build items that give the best possible user experience. (2) Make plenty of money so nobody can stop them doing (1). (1) has the side effect of achieving (2), and (2) has the side effect of (3) raising the share price. But that is not a goal for Apple.

Didn't Jobs send out a mass email letting everyone know things would be okay when the stock was on the low side? When the stock was around $110...

For all of you who are freaking out over the plastic back, hasn't it been stated BY SOMEONE WHO HAS ACTUALLY HELD THE iPHONE 3G that the plastic back doesn't feel cheap but actually pretty solid?

http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/09/iphone-3g-hands-on/

And xploit, I understand what you're saying 100%. Who the hell wants better reception? And most budget phones have GPS, 3G, a great (not cheap. the iPod Touch screen is just as good as the original iPhone's. The problems have been fixed a long time ago. If you got your head out of your ass you'd know this), an amazing battery life for a 3G phone, a fast processor, and a lot more "budget" features. Take that!

Their quote...."The plastic back didn't feel too cheap."

Screen shotting the specs doesn't count as proof. Jokes. Even if it's true though, I wouldn't worry about it personally.

I'm sick of hearing that the iPod Touch has the same screen as the iPhone. It's absolute BS. I have both in front of me right now. The touch is a week 38 with the "fixed" screen, though the negative black issue is kinda there (more than the iPhone at least), but the biggest problem is that the whole screen has a yellowish cast. The colors are nowhere near as accurate as my iPhone. I've seen it on other touches too, its not just mine.

Now, anyone who says that they can't tell the difference obviously isn't a videophile. However, many of us who use apple products ARE, or can at least tell yellow-gray from gray-gray. The new screen is probably fine for the masses, but for a company like apple that revolves around art (graphic design, web design, video editing, etc.) I would think that the screen being PERFECT would be one of their priorities. I say cut costs elsewhere.

And xploit, you're right about everything. Somebody needed to back you up. :p iPhone 3G is budget IN COMPARISON to the original, so it wouldn't surprise me to see the cheaper screen in there.

Also, it's not unusual for apple to use BUDGET components. The screen in the macbook is significantly lower quality than those in the macbook pro/air, in fact it's just plain bad, despite being in a $1000+ laptop. And the 20" iMac screen is worse than the 24". Etc...

Sorry for the rant but I had to get this out.

Well I've never even looked at an iPod Touch for more than a few seconds, so in my opinion, ignorance is bliss. I can deal with the fact that the screen might have a 3 Pixels Per Inch difference from the current screen. I'm pretty sure that even if Apple is trying to lower costs with a less expensive screen, that they would make it to where you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. If you hadn't been on the online Apple Store comparing specs of devices, you probably would have never thought twice about it once you had the iPhone 3G in your hands.

I think that the move to a plastic backing was due to the additional antennae. Reception on 1.0 was a big issue and that was partially due to the metal backing. With the addition of the GPS receiver less interference from the casing was required. Early reports have been that reception is greatly improved in the new iPhone.

I firmly agree with you on this point. Its not only about cost savings, I bet there is little difference between the black back and the aluminum back cost wise. I am also guessing that the tapered back will be more comfortable to hold, but I have no idea.

I really appreciate that. Thanks. Do you remember how everyone was so into every little detail of the original iPhone? Forums everywhere were crammed with people complaining about the screens and what version they had. I really can't see how those original users would not agree with me. The only explanation is that this forum is chock full of new users. Thanks for the back up Orocker.

that appreciation was budget..BUDGET BUDGET!!....

iphone 3g clearly has cost cutting in some parts, Wouldnt surprise me if they are using a cheaper screen, also no dock included, how ridiculous, apple are becomeng too greedy, rermeber first few gens of ipod, you got a case dock charger,
now all you get is ipod and usb cable, Thanks Apple for your kindness..
Receptions fine as it. I like the metal on my iphone, it makes it unique. AND they are still selling 8GB, What a bunch of idiots. Im sorry but im very angry at iphone 3g and apple.

I also remember when you got food on domestic flights and when checking in a 2nd bag didn't cost anything extra. Maybe Apple is scared of this economy. Even still the monthly cost increase on an already pricey plan isn't very recession friendly. All I know is that I would of been all over a proper new version. I will be keeping my 1st gen iPhone because it is without a doubt the better product. Lets hope Apple gets on point and gives us a new model!

Hey, I look forward to hearing about your world-beating cellphone and computer company once you get it set up. I'm sure it'll be a billion-pound winner since you're so much smarter than the "idiots" at Apple.

On a slightly more realistic note, why not just skip a generation if you're happy with the current model? There's bound to be a v3 phone next year.

The iPhone 3G Screen....

I don't think that they're using the same screen because i read about something where it said that it only took $100 to actually make it in the factory

You know what? Apple should just completely bastardize the 3g and make it disposable! OK maybe not but they might as well make it totally plastic and call it BUDGETPHONE they could sell it at WALLMART!

Waiting for the next one does seem like a good idea.. I just didnt expect them to keep an 8GB model, but then again, 32GB is a bit unrealistic at the moment.

I actually think they did a really good job because, even though they could have done a little bit more, they did a great job. Here's what they added:
- 3G
- GPS
- Enterprise Support & 2.0 Software
- More Countries
- More Affordable

I think that's really cool that the first iPhone was $600 and the even better iPhone is $400 LESS THAN that.

iPhone NANO

That's what I was beginning to think..... but I think that was weird... they have been getting people complaining about how there is not MMS, video recording, voice recording, etc., and they don't do it...... although you do have to give it to 'em.... they did do a lot with it.....

But anyways....I think they're gonna release an iPhone Nano....It will be smaller than the iPhone 3G, and won't have GPS and will be 16GB or 32GB... and then they will upgrade the iPhone 3G.

I don't believe it is the same part. The old iPhone screens had reported issues with touch sensitivity decreasing with time (especially with people who push hard on the display).
It may have the same resolution but does anyone have a part number to prove it is the same screen as the touch??
