It’s the first of its kind that’s why it won so calm down
And, what’s even MORE amazing, is that it’s shipping. It’s one thing to have some esoteric hardware that’s still having the OS and “how will it be made” figured out. It’s another thing entirely to have a device that’s actually shipping. Flawed, yes, but they’ve figured out the hardest part, how can it be built and shipped in a working state. That, more than anything else, is the true triumph. Going forward, just like the iPhone, will just be iteration on that.

Soon (later?) other companies will solve that VERY important problem, too.

Just about spit out my coffee, laughing

Locked down ecosystem and single user? I sure hope not.

The single user bit is absolutely obnoxious, to the point of being absurd. Seriously Apple, for that reason alone, you suck.
The Mac and Apple TV are multiuser devices.
The other devices: iPhone, iPad, Watch and Vision Pro are personal devices, as personal as underwear. You don't go sharing your underwear with other people, right?
Plus I don't want other people messing with my personal devices.

Multiple profiles would mean that the other users could take over all my storage space unless I buy a very large capacity device.
Also, I don't want to fight to use it when I want to.

Android is a modified iPhone UI that supports multiple users and doesn’t have a locked down ecosystem. If a single successful headset ships in the future without “pinch to interact” though, I’d be truly surprised.
Android is a cheap ripoff of the iPhone. Even their Facial Recognition is nothing more than a joke when compared to the way FaceID works. The AVP Eye Recognition and tracking are at a much higher level, no need to elaborate on all the other amazing technologies packed into it.

No- they're 1000% creepy.
On the subject, when was the last time popular science was even relevant? This is so strange. The novelty is fleeting and then the AVP sits around looking for a problem to solve. Hardly setting the world ablaze compared to Apple's industry-leading silicon advancements that should have received the award.

The EyeSight is actually impressive. No company never dare try this concept before. And people who never saw it in person don't know that it a "3D" display curved around the display. It is intended to be observed by two human eyes, not by looking from 2D footages. The media did this feature dirty. (FU iFixit)

Yeah, many early adopters who returned it back then are buying it again. Just do a search on Reddit.

I've seen it in person, I've done the demo, I've seen my buddy use it along with his son.

It's creepy..not just a little bit, like makes my skin crawl creepy. It's the uncanny valley x100.

The more you read Reddit, the less informed you are.

My buddy (referenced above) sold it after not using it for over a month. A close relative of mine, who works as a developer for Apple corporate, has one and hasn't even powered it on since October.

For the love of god... don't remove EyeSight. As a Vision Pro user, it's really something that shouldn't be removed, but rather improved. Yeah, sometimes its appearance is odd, but other times it's not so bad. But it would be way worse to just have a solid exterior when the point of the headset is the combination of both "worlds".

And before someone says that it should be removed because its "useless" and would "reduce cost if removed"... Read the BoM first, then calculate the cost of the micro-OLED displays for 400,000 units... It's not the AMOLED exterior that's the problem...

Largely agree, but a trade-off is having to position the passthrough cameras below the user's line of sight.

If that makes your skin crawl, you must have serious issues.

What makes you say that? How do you know what people posts there is not true?
There's a verification process for AVP owners just for the purpose of avoid misinformation.

I don't do things based on what other people do or don't do.

It seems to me the main group of people who really appreciate the VP are those for whom it significantly improves productivity and who find the comfort tolerable (possibly with third party augmentation). Those who find the comfort intolerable or have no improved productive use case for it have no interest in it. And those who find the comfort tolerable but only use it for consumption are somewhat divided.

I know it’s really hard for many people in this forum, but let’s try to remember people are different, no product is meant for everyone, and every product will be great for one and terrible for another.

Sure, you can make predictions about the future of a product and its business feasibility, but I have no idea why any consumer would want a product that helps another, to stop existing. Maybe they think by hating the VP as vocally as possible, Apple will somehow listen and stop making it (due to the hate rather than low sales), and instead make the thing they do want that they wouldn’t have gotten otherwise. I mean that’s pretty sociopathic and delusional 😂.

It's not selling like Macbooks or iPhones. I don't think lowering the price would make much difference. The tech is impressive but it feels like an niche/accessory/hobby more than a product on its own.

No r&d cost which often is 90% of cost for early product introductions no material or construction costs for the device. There is much more than component costs.
Wait, so you know that R&D cost can be 90% of the cost, but somehow think that this R&D cost goes away when you remove an already existing feature?

Not totally true!

I saw six people on mastodon talking about it today

They are super pumped they can use AVP as an UltraWide monitor that costs four times as much as a real one.
It’s also four times as big but takes up zero actual space and is completely portable, and can immerse you in an environment for focus. Not to mention it can add as many other virtual vOS app windows as you want.
It’s typical for mockers to acknowledge maybe one or two valuable aspects of a product that isn’t meant for them and conveniently ignore the rest and so conclude “objectively poor value”, but their selective bias makes them poor objective judges.
