Wireless transmission configuration for AVP visualization

For AVP cases, the HDMI output of the endoscopy tower was converted to Network Device Interface (NDI) format and streamed over a secured, closed 5 GHz Wi-Fi 6 network dedicated to low-latency intraoperative video and isolated from institutional systems to protect patient information and maintain throughput. The stream was delivered in real time to each headset worn by the operating surgeon and assistant. Performance was stable throughout, with no latency perceptible to the surgeons; latency was not objectively quantified.
 
This was definitely a use case they discussed when they released it. The whole point of these products at the price point they're at is for AR situations like this.

I'm not sure how the cost is lower, but either way it gets paid off with one surgery.

5 surgeries saves enough time for one more. The hospitals would gladly add one more to a surgical teams work load to collect the revenue; at marginal staffing costs.

No, but if surgeries can be faster and equally good with quality, faster is better. More time under anesthesia can be a problem for people. Surgeons can end up fatigued.

Faster could also mean that more patients are seen, which reduces wait time for procedures.

And I could see how the surgeon being able to adjust the monitor in view vs having someone else do it would be very beneficial for the workflow in surgery. Those monitors in the OR are not the easiest to see, especially with all the lights they have in the field

Wait times to get surgery done can be quite long, eg a couple months ... speaking of personal experience

That's often about availability of surgery facility time and the lack of desire on management side to pay above a certain rate for facility time, even when it's available.

I was just speaking to my cousin about this last weekend (he's an Orthopedic surgeon and that is the lone reason he's booked out 9 months).
 
Honestly thinking about this more this would be a really good thing for rural hospitals. My buddy who is a surgeon doesn't have his fancy surgery robot when he has to travel to rural hospitals. Something like this could benefit a rural hospital greatly.

Hopefully the rural hospital situation is better outside the USA.
Here, the Medicaid slashing is pushing rural hospitals to the absolute brink.

They will not be procuring any VR headsets for surgeries, that much is sure.

There are so many good uses for the AVP in a variety of professional settings. Will Apple keep working on it long enough to slowly expand in to new fields? Hard to say.
 
As a Biomedical Engineering Technician, I can confirm that using AVP should be significantly more cost-effective than a traditional patient monitoring system. Unfortunately, due to the strict requirements of the MDR in Europe, integrating it wouldn’t be as straightforward as it is in the US. If someone develops an MDR-compliant solution, it likely won’t be inexpensive.
 
Personally, I don’t care too much about the speed, I only care about doing it correctly.
Which surgeries were not done correctly?

The surgeons ALREADY have to use a monitor. This just puts it right in their field of view rather than further away and at an awkward angle.

Personally, I don't care too much about the speed, I only care that the doctor can focus on the task and not be uncomfortable WHILE he has a knife in my eye.

Apple absolutely thought of medical professionals using it. So many keep missing the fact that it was released as a "Pro" device intentionally, because Apple was targeting these exact types of users. That consumers find this very expensive technology too expensive has only muddied its reputation. It was always intended for professional usage, such as this. And a 30-40 minute usage window is well within the neck-weight threshold.
Well, my neck pain improved by wearing the AVP. My neck muscles got stronger and now just a little neck stretching is all I need when I feel discomfort, instead of having to do emergency visits to the chiropractor.
