I'd just add "looking into it" doesn't mean guilty. They lose cases all the time. Unbiased analysts have suggested the DOJ's case is pretty weak for antitrust action, but of course that doesn't mean the DOJ will lose (if the case continues). Obviously if the case is brought and Apple is found guilty, then that will considerably change things.
As I said before, I wait and trust the outcome 😊

Oh well, as even as your own DOJ and the EU are looking into it. It begs the question if they all are wrong. They all have studied legal laws and I trust in a fair outcome.
A fair outcome doesn’t necessarily mean you will be happy with the outcome. Similar to the epic vs apple lawsuit. It was a fair outcome and a universe of posters couldnt believe apple won.

This doesn't force Apple to change anything from how it already is anyway.
Yeah it kind of would because it would probably mean that when you set up your iPhone you would have screen to pick your search engine & they probably don’t want you to do that hence why you don’t have that option already in the USA

I’m pretty sure all that is being discussed here is forbidding Google from paying to be the default. Not demanding a “search engine choice screen” which is a bad customer experience and actually pointless, because let’s be honest, 1) 99% of users will pick Google, 2) those who don’t want Google can already change the setting.

if 99% of users would still pick google then why are google fighting it in court if nothing would change. Most people stick with default search engine when they get their first iPhone because generally they don’t know any better

My suspicion is they're worried Microsoft will pay up to be the default, not that there will be a choice screen. Because you are right, most people will stick to the default.

All it does is keep Google from being able to have a contract with Apple to be the default search engine. It has nothing to do with what Apple sets are the default search engine.

Oh well we will just have to wait & see but since the us government believes google are a monopoly by removing that deal & google still staying as the default search engine anyway they are still going to be a monopoly

Being a monopoly isn’t illegal, restricting competition and behaving anti-competitively while a monopoly is. So as long as Google isn’t paying Apple to keep others out, it should be fine.

google has already said we will make concessions on the money side & the us government said no & are still taking them to court it’s not just about the deal

It won't be on Google at that point. They aren't doing any contracts for Apple to keep it default. That would be Apple deciding what to do on their own platform.

Didn't apple say that they that they default to google because *checks notes* it'd result in the best user experience and *stifled laughter* not about the money?

Now if yahoo come to the table and start offering apple 20bn/yr to be the default; I wonder what they'd do

What search engine gives a better user experience AND could legitimately handle the astronomical increase in traffic being the iOS default would bring without collapsing? I’m serious. You act like there is another obvious answer and so clearly Apple is making Google the default only for the money, so what is the option with a better user experience?

I honestly think Apple would stick with Google, but I admit I am not 100% confident in that. My guess is we’ll find out soon.

well that's my point.

Previously it's been reported that microsoft has approached apple multiple times to try and persuade them to use bing instead of google, even offering 100% of bing's revenue as a sweetener. Apple knocked them back each time saying google offers the best user experience.

The point is now with google unable to pay apple 20b/yr anymore whether apple will stay true to their word and continue to back google because it's the best UX; or will they just go to the next highest bidder -bing.

If apple stay honest, and keep google as default then google actually benefits overall as they simply save 20b/year and apple lose that 20b. But we all know apple is all about the shareholder experience, not the user experience.

It would take a lot of money for Apple to switch because Google is so much better than any other search engine. I can do the same search on all of them and Google will have what I need in the first 2-3 links, while all of the others I'm lucky if it's on page 1.

I couldn't disagree more strongly with this point, and I'm someone with no Apple shares and a lot of Apple products. But I guess we'll see what happens.
The trick, of course, is that its all black and white nonsense. The other poster want to create a false dichotomy, when reality is that Apple care about both shareholders (generating new revenue) and user experience. And user experience creates value for shareholders. Yes, Apple is not perfect and will occasionally put revenue generation over the user experience, but that doesn't mean the always do.

Oh we know the answer...

"Do I hear 15 billion from the gentlemen on my left?"
"15 billion is our number... do I hear 17 billion? 17 billion is our number.... anyone?"

I am really confused at all the people who say DDG is fine. I tried it again today as an experiment and, as I remember, it’s terrible. Google is definitely better, although clearly worse than it used to be. (Kagi is the best, but again, will never be the default option, unless Apple buys it or something).

I don’t think I’m searching for weird things either. But fact of the matter is making it the default would destroy their servers. I think Apple’s two options are Bing or Google, and the real question is will they give us a worse default if Microsoft pays them. I hope the answer is no, but I honestly don’t know.
DDG is not perfect, i do agree… but I’m not going to use google anyway. Bing and DDG are a good combination for me.

Do you really think that’s it?!

How does Safari know what google is, safari has to know what a search engine is, it has to know what to do, where to look fo and so on.

So, no, it’s not as simple as that.

Safari knows what search engines are already. It knows how to ask for autocomplete from them. The user decides which one to use. Right now, Apple slots in google as the default when a new user is created (like when installing or upgrading the OS), but there are multiple options there as well. You can go choose from a bunch of them. What's at stake is Apple NOT slotting google automatically and instead asking the user to choose one. That's it.

The magic of APIs.

Actually it’s even less than that. It’s simply about whether Google can pay Apple to be slotted in automatically. Nothing preventing Apple from slotting them in automatically for free, which is what I suspect will happen.
