I found a preview of the Apple thanksgiving special, it’s a true masterpiece. Stanley Kubrick and Steven Spielberg will be green with envy.

So they want to make more content most people won't want to watch as a business strategy?

Look, there is a place for it all, but Disney-fying content is one of the biggest reasons why I no longer watch network TV shows. It doesn't have to have gobs of violence or nudity or swears to be enjoyable, but when a show is picked clean and hyper sanitized of anything that someone under 13 would find offensive then it loses any kind of lasting appeal.

If Apple wants to be the next Disney producing cloyingly sweet content that is vapid and unrealistic, go right ahead, but it won't be content a large portion of users will find interesting or appealing to watch.

Can't they do both? I mean sure, make the ABC/Disney mindless clones of other shows for families, and then make the original edgy HBO/Cinemax content for the people that drop $1000 on a ****ing phone and are responsible enough to not have a bunch of rug rats running around at 11pm at night.

Apple has to get off their moral high ground and realize we don't need another also-ran content producer with a massive hero complex. There is already gobs of "family" focused content out there, we don't need another company to throw more **** on the pile. Instead of being scared of special interest groups just focus on putting out high quality content without the nanny-state censors and their black markers hanging around the production studios waiting to kick up a storm.

Good. I’m sick of television being inundated with profanity and violence. It will be nice to have some quality programming produced that I don’t feel I have to shield my children’s eyes from.

Doesn't bug me. Too many shows have started using violence, sex, and nudity purely because they can. Think of how many episodes of Game of Thrones have characters delivering exposition with sex in the back ground or while having sex, purely because they could. It adds almost nothing to the actual show aside from saying it's there.

Having to work around nudity, sex, and gore has resulted in loads of endlessly creative solutions that have for now been abandoned on TV just because they can.

Like anything, when people jump on the bandwagon and add sex and violence to be sensational is never a good thing, but GoT would not be the massive hit it is if it went through a Disney like content scrubbing and emerged as something that could be shown on ABC Family.

Also there is NOTHING "endlessly creative" on channels like ABC Family, or ALL TV Network content, which are devoid of anything novel or creative and full of tepid regurgitated treatments of plots that have already been seen a million times over because it is too hard these days for Network producers beholden to special interest groups and government regulations to try something creative and original opposed to recycling content from the past that the mindless masses currently tolerate as standard fare.

And I am sick of movies and shows being dumbed down just to aim for the kids audience. Kids have their own tv shows and movies, they need to leave it out of adults stuff

Public TV only sucks because they lack creativity and budget and have recycled the plots too many times, not because they're restricted from coarse content. Generally, if you don't pay for something, it's gonna be worse. Same reason kids watch Nickelodeon and Disney Channel (which are cable only). Though there have been some kinda cool game shows like Shark Tank on public TV lately. Anyway, GoT sucks too.

Raw language? Coarse content? You mean, foul language/cursing?

I deeply saddened I can’t get even more. I just can’t get enough of it. Plus, it really shows off the prowess of today music/screen writers.

why don't they just buy out a network and make the lame network tv no one watches anymore cus everyone wants edgy cable stuff

Sounds good to me. It is in keeping with their history and reputation. There are plenty of other places to go for courser content.

Seeing that I think I am in the minority according to many other commenters, and that is fine, I actually admire and applaud Tim Cook for doing this. I think this may be one of the first things I can honestly say I admire that he's done. I am no fan of his, but I am so sick of seeing nothing but depravity, sex, offensive language and raunch everywhere on TV and films nowadays, just for the sake of it being there, (It's no longer cool when everyone does it) especially when it adds nothing to the story. I'm not a prude when it comes to this stuff, I can watch anything, but there is point where its so excessive everywhere it has become effete. You can see raunch everywhere now, so not doing it is the courageous move. Especially when you know many younger kids will want to see carpool karaoke

I would like to thank Tim on behalf of my family and all others who don't want to be subjected to filth everywhere we look and for having a sense of decency!!

I agree. I am glad Apple is doing this. Really for those who want the filth there is plenty of it out there so don't sign up and use what you like. Really if I want I can go off on the GoT and MA rated show threads saying this stuff is garbage, sex, swearing and I will never watch it so I don't go on there and complain.

The only thing I read now is that these shows will not be included with AM. So AM is a waste. If Apple comes out with a seperate subscription service heck Disney is doing one in 2019 that won't have much vile content then I am in. If it is all PPV where I have to buy episodes then I don't care no matter how much I would like the content. Paying $3 for a HD episode is a ripoff and I never did it. The most I spend on a HD movie is $10 but I quite often look for discounts of $5 for HD.

This is disappointing news. I don’t expect all shows to be full of mature adult content but when they go to the other extreme with vapid, unrealistically sweet content I’m not interested. What’s wrong with PG, PG-13 and TV-14 content? People curse and do these other things in real life — I guess I’m being unreasonable for wanting the content to be realistic.

Why not produce a range of content and let the market decide?
That's like asking why they didn't produce a computer with a floppy-drive and one without and let the market decide? Apple has never been driven by what the masses desire. It has always sought to control and influence the markets it enters with conservatism and discipline more than edgy thinking and it chooses the market carefully based on a pretty narrow vision.
