Apple Warns Customers to Beware of Counterfeit Power Adapters and Batteries

Apple charges outrageous prices for accessories so although there's nothing wrong with warning against buying cheap counterfeit chargers and cables, it can't help sounding quite hollow.
Apple chargers are expensive compared to dangerous fake ones.

I've never had problems with knockoff batteries or chargers, but my school district has had problems with 3rd party ones. They actually caught on fire a few times.

Also had problems with remanufactured ink cartridges from Amazon. Just clogged my printer.

This is why I try to buy straight from the manufacturer. May be a bit more expensive, but at least I'll know it'll work.

Apple should put serialnumbers on Every product, including cables.

Recently some Dutch online stores sold guinuine parts, so they say, but no way I can verify that (cable came in Foxconn seal, which is strange right).

Can I get a usb-c > usb-a cable and use one of these to charge my 2016 MBP?

IMO, there's a much better move than blaming clients for choosing the wrong charger.

Apple has a large 30% margin on ALL products. Which means where they make money is in devices not accessory.

So why not selling batteries & chargers under cost to wipe out competition and avoid bad publicity of existence losing iPhones?

In the abstract, yes. In terms of risk, perhaps not. But the real point I was making was Apple chargers are expensive compared to most other chargers, whether fake, genuine, respected 3rd-party company... etc. So Apple saying 'hey, er, that's a nice device you bought from us for lots of money, it'd be, er, a shame if anything happened to that wouldn't it? Like if it caught on fire or something... better pay us to make sure that don't happen... ' could be seen to read a little less than completely altruistic.

I bought a cheap knockoff charger from Amazon once and it tripped my whole house. I now use Amazon Basics lightning cables with a genuine Apple plug as I get a new one every year with my iPhone purchases.

Not saying that Apple isn´t charging a bit too much for their chargers but when you look at photos from tear downs of Apple chargers vs. cheap 3rd chargers it´s quite easy to see that you get a lot more from Apple..

It´s not just overcharging for the sake of profit, it´s actually a much better built product as well..

I'm sorry to differ, but I had a frequently used Apple USB 1 cord from the late 1990s/early 2000s. It just finally wore out earlier this year. I'm lucky if any of their current cords last a year, much less 15.

$19 is not much for a charger (12 Watt) if you consider it can potentially safe your life.

$19 (£19 here!) wouldn't be much for a glass of water or a 1-minute phone call in that context, but that doesn't make it right to charge everyone that!

Apples chargers and cables are ripoffs. There was this "special offer" over here when you could bring in your fake charger to the Apple Store and Apple would give you one of the iPhone chargers for half prise. They were still making money so yeah selling the chargers for double the amount later is a rip off.

Also, I never ever leave a device with a lithium ion batteries charging or connected to the outlet if I'm not in the room.

Really? I guess it's best to be on the safe side, but if I were to stop charging devices when not in the room, things would become very inconvenient.

I was referring to the "power brick" part of the charger, not usb-cables.

Sorry about that, my confusion. Some people were talking about cords and others Including you were talking about the actual chargers (which was the original topic).

Big difference between a broken charger and one that electrocutes you or burns your house down.
Quite rightly so. Ever heard of such case ? No.
Whereas 20% of Apple cable-oriented stuff degrades or shortcuts at an early stage.
Note that USB nowadays carries the full power (leading to 1...3 Amps) which slightens the distinction between Power Bricks and USB output circuits when it comes to fire hazards.
Apple selectively looking at the first - instead of materializing their superiority where they can and are obliged to.

Maybe offer lower prices and MUCH more durable charging cables to help us out.

Durable? Perhaps. Although, I personally have not had issues with fraying or other issues. But cheaper? Apple charges a premium for everything. In return, I believe, they put out quality hardware. No, Apple isn't perfect and No, I'm not seeking an argument on imperfections, because it does happen. But my hardware experiences over the years have been great. And any issues I did experience, was replaced by Apple without hassle.

People absolutely have been electrocuted by cheap chargers.

People absolutely have been electrocuted by cheap chargers.

People have also been shocked, injured and houses burned down, by official Apple batteries, chargers, adapters, and cables.

That's why millions of them have been recalled and replaced over the years.

Nothing is a guarantee of safety it seems. Just degrees of it. Maybe.
