First, the device doesn't have that capability, so forget about that patent.

The way it would work is that CMOS image sensor pixels would be interspersed in the interstices in the display array.

I understand that it's not incorporated in the ipad, I was just commenting on the post saying it was interesting and asking how it would work.

Thanks for commenting back :)

True... but I can despise them them for being ignorant, unintelligent, mindless organisms. (and from what I hear, I think steveo may think the same way). At least I don't try to take advantage of them by trying to sell them the garbage.

Your point of view appears to be a little lonely in this thread. Where's that 90% of people you keep saying shares your unwarranted arrogance about how the only people who are smart are those who hate the iPad?

I can't fathom the level of narcissism you display. I conclude you must be trolling. Good one. You got us all going. Silly us.

Engadget do you copy?

Kiss my ***, you and your fake goofy journalistic posts that praise an epic failure like iPad. How much did Apple gave you? And yes i just run SDK and there is also a mode for calling! This are dinosaurs bones from iPhone SDK so cut the ********!

Apple keep on getting the message. You failed.

I am a mac user, i have 2 macbook pros, 3 ipods, 1 iphone and i am planning to buy the new 27inch. So dont think that im a pc guy who wants to put flames here.

I get angry when they try to make something agly, beautiful. Journalists, the worst race of people ever!

I'm curious to know what you think would be success for this product, realising this is a product that isn't released. Yet you come on here and declare it an *epic* failure. I'd like to know what you would consider success in a product.

I'm not sure whether they will consider this a success or failure (and it is Apple that is the ultimate judge) but I am certain I find this product interesting today and I will be purchasing one and I'm sure getting as much enjoyment as I do from their other products that I own. If you don't feel the same way that doesn't mean it's a failure (let alone "epic"), it just means they didn't address your needs - but I'm sure you're not so arrogant to believe every product they produce should meet *your* requirements?

An *epic* failure? What a stupid statement to make, and if it's a prediction, put your crystal ball away because they don't work.

I will not be buying the iPad

Why?

This thing is so cool. It ticks every box as a large iPod. The key I think is the glimpse at the iWork suite ( where the puck will be! )

however, I will not be buying one as the screen is not flexable and can't be folded and stored in my pocket!
What an opertunity missed.

sacrificed for the price, of course.
the 2nd gen iPad will have it. that's why i'm waiting.

The second generation iPad will be the one to buy. This first one is almost like a prototype, nearly there in so many ways, but just a little half baked. Great idea and huge potential, but just not there yet.

Good one!, the freedom to operate the iPad in different orientations also kills the point of having a static front facing camera on just one edge. I myself would love to do video chatting on this device but I think its going to a technical challenge for Apple to do integrate a camera.

Ignoring all 8 pages of off-topicness, and only a handful are getting it.

It does not lack a camera because Apple is "purposefully withholding it."
It does not lack a camera because of cost, although that is certainly a helpful factor.

1) The iPad doesn't have a back-facing camera because Apple does not want to be the company that sells the world's largest, most awkward camera.

Seriously, do you ever take pictures of people with your laptop? "Here let me take your picture! Hold on..." and then you whip out this huge, 10" slab and start aiming it at them? Ridiculous. It reminds me of sidetalking with the N-Gage: it's just ridiculously awkward.

2) There's no frontfacing camera because there is no elegant way to videoconference with something this large that can't support itself other than lying flat on a desk.

Sure, you could do this with a cell phone because it weighs nothing and can rest cradled in the palm of your hand. But do you ever really videoconference holding a laptop in your hand? No, because it's awkward. And that would still be better than an iPad because it can at least rest flat in your hand while you do it. The iPad would have to be "pinched" by your fingers as you held it up vertical. This simply is not practical. There's no way Apple could even demo this without it looking idiotic.

The only answer for videoconferencing would be some sort of stand, but that's very inelegant. Look at Steve talking about the iSight in this video. Appreciate how much time he spends crapping on even desktop mounted cameras. Of course he's not going to allow a ridiculously awkward camera experience that requires an extra stand on his product. Steve couldn't have even DEMOED the videoconferencing if they had it because he only had a couch and would have needed some sort of desk just to do it, completely missing the point of the iPad (a computer that doesn't need a lap or desk).

Simply put, a camera makes little sense from an interface point of view so they did not include it until they can figure out how do it right (a la copy-and-paste). And it simply might not suit a device like this, ever. Not appreciating this is why none of you work for Apple.

The camera will come when their in screen camera patent is ready for prime time. It may even be there now though I doubt it. In screen is the way to go though.

What is wrong with people like this? They join a forum just to post angry messages because they bought into the ridiculous hype that grew around this device, and have been disappointed. They rate every article about the ipad negative without even reading it (horrors!). They flame people who suggest they may actually buy one. For God's sake, just go do something else! Go outside! Nobody is *forcing* you to buy one!

And for all of you people calling Apple stupid, and saying Steve Jobs is an idiot for lack of flash support/camera/multitasking: if you are such a genius and know what 95% of people want (as so many of you have angrily claimed), then get off your fat butts and go make a billion or two designing your own, because obviously you have the knowledge to make a perfect device, and you'll make a killing. When you've made your first billion dollars, let me know and I'll stop thinking you're a bunch of crybabies.

First and last post to the rumor section of this site. I thought it was a pretty cool site up until the day the iPad was released. But what a loudmouth bunch of whiners hangs out here. (Not all of you. Apologies to those who accepted the iPad for what it was, and decided to buy it or not buy it, and kept it civil.)

This may have been mentioned elsewhere, but if those "last minute" leaked photos of the iPad were real, it looks like at least some of the test devices had a camera or something at the top. If you look at that security enclosure there is a clearance in the bezel for the home button at the bottom, and then another, differently shaped void at the top where a camera might go:

Holding the thing in your lap and chatting with a friend would have been great. For those who for some bizarre reason find it awkward or straining to hold or tilt such a light device, just don't use it. Still no reason to deny the huge chunk of other people who would have loved to have it in there.

A majority of people are going to use this curled up on the couch or in bed, with it tiled up toward you resting on your legs anyway. No idea why people assume you'd have to hold it with one or two hands directly in front of your face. The majority of users are going to have the device facing directly at them for optimal viewing to begin with and even as thin as it is, there's plenty of room to allow a front facing cam to tilt.

I mean, surely the only way video chat could be done is with someone holding it in front of their face, right?

Surely there's no way for the device to simply be placed on a flat surface and be at the perfect angle for viewing and recording.

MY GOD! And it's even sold by Apple and constantly with the device?! Astounding!

Yes how would it ever be possible to keep your video capture oriented in the proper direction so the other user doesn't have to rotate their device.

My god, if only there were some way that the accelerometer could rotate the video input the same 90 degrees as the display when rotated.

Clearly, such wizardry is beyond the engineers at Apple.

Blame AT&T for this one

For all the shortcomings of the iPad... I have to imagine they were ready to go with the camera feature. I mean, it wouldn't even be an innovation. But I can't even imagine what kind of tailspin that would have put the already rickety AT&T network into. As a devout Apple guy, I didn't think I'd like the Android, but I have to admit –*pretty sick stuff. And its on a capable network. I'm sure Google's working on something that's going to blow the iPad out of the water. For starters, not calling it iPad.

Go on Apple, dangle that carrot in front of us a little bit more. One day you might bless us with up to date tech!

I have a hunch that the camera is already built into the screen of the existing ipad; and it's functionality will be enabled by iPhone OS 4.0. It makes more sense if the screen embedded camera would be announced with the new OS and be present in both the new iphone and the ipad. iphone OS 4.0 might also include multitasking. That way, the 2 biggest complaints would be gone by June.

There's no way there's a "screen embedded camera." That patent was completely impractical, and no one's actually been able to solve the problem of noise from the display pixels screwing up the image sensors.

That would be pretty cool, but like u said, pretty impractical. They probably just hid the camera in a corner of the device and is going to be unlocked in June via firmware update.:D

If they do that, there must be 2 cameras. Otherwise you can't flip it to any orientation and still take photos/videos from all angles. I'd say probably a camera in the top left corner and another one on the bottom right. That way there's a camera on top no matter how you flip it.

We are really getting out there with the speculation ... I just don't see multi front facing cameras. The iPhone flips around when being viewed but only has the 1 rear camera and you have to turn it to get the best picture. I would imagine there would be 1 front facing camera if it gets 1 ... fingers crossed as that is what it would take for me to buy 1 ... and I would think it would be in landscape mode. But ... Hey if it does end up getting multi camera that would just be even better!
