lol What a nice company some you get on your knees for and... uh, bow.

It's not like they earnestly thought of all the innovative features they could, released it and went: "oh, nuts! what about feature X? guess it'll have to wait for v.2"

They purposely held back on you. So they'll get people hooked on a mild form of crack and eventually increase its potency with each incarnation.

A $8 video camera it costs them to insert and mark up a good 20% and they held back on you!!! lmao :D You people are a laugh, you are. Your loyalty to such rats. Such a petty little thing to exclude when it can help tilt the scales to sale or no sale.

I don't say this much, ....but ,

I love you

I've been reading macrumors for quite some time, althought I'm more a lurker than a poster.

However, is it at all possible the Apple is actually holding out on features for 2 months from now? Maybe even June? Point being, iPhone OS 4.0 should be coming out around June, wouldn't that imply impending (software) features for the iPad that we don't even know about? This is iPhone OS 3.2. Hardware changes are probably set for the most part, but software wise?

Thoughts?
Yes, absolutely. With all of the good alternatives to the iPhone these days, we're definitely going to see some new things in OS 4.0. Don't hold your breath for flash (or even multitasking), but I'm willing to be we get some new home screen features, app organization, notification stuff, etc. What ever happened to the ESPN notification that was demoed so long ago?

Do you think that Apple will shock us in 60 days with camera iPads? Why the 60 day wait?

A few things on the wait. One could be simple manufacturing wait. The other is that they have yet to receive FCC approval. On the bottom of the Apple iPad site:
Some features and applications are not available in all areas. Application availability and pricing are subject to change.
This device has not yet been authorized as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission. This device is not, and may not be, offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased, until authorization is obtained.

The optimist in me says they hadn't mass manufactured these yet and had near-final version prototypes that were used in the media event ... and maybe just maybe cameras will make it in the final version that is submitted to the FCC for approval.

The realist in me says Apple is simply waiting for version 2 of the iPad to ensure added features.

lmfao Right back atcha, kiddo! ;)

You might know me as "Macshill", keeping fanboys humble (basically holding a mirror right up to the faces and never letting them get away w/ fanboy hypocrisy) since August 2008 [...if I could remember my e-mail address to log in].

Because the droid will never get replaced?

That's the stupidest argument I've ever heard.

How is it Apple's fault that you bought something and a newer version came out? Did you get p*ssed off at Sony for coming out with a 3.2GHZ Quad Core when you just bought the 2.8GHZ quad core?

So the 3GS is faster... it isn't faster on cell networks, now is it. How many things do you use on an iPhone that are CPU bound? Practically nothing other than games. Get real dude.

No because the Droid's camera has a flash.

There will be no camera in 60 days. Apple needs to begin the production asap if they have not already in order to ship them in less than 50 days from China. There is no time for a hardware adjustment. They don't even have enough time for software tweaks.

Huh? What are you smoking? I use my 1st gen iPhone everyday and I still marvel at it. There's hardly any useful apps that I can't use and the the longevity of this device is phenomenal.
I had a different experience than you, and that means I'm 'smoking' something? Interesting.

It wasn't a good experience for me. Over priced, under powered, missed tons of basic features. I regretted ditching my Blackberry that soon. Now, I have gripes, but far fewer than I did with the first gen iPhone. There weren't apps when it first came out, so I'm not sure why you're mentioning apps. It was a pretty device at the time, but that was it.

Okay, Joe. I see your iPad and raise you a Lenovo Tablet. ;)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5DYuVN6nuY

It won best of show for CES 2010. Yes, it's pricier than the iPad.

I'm a bit slow and that's the first time I've seen it. Ouch that tablet UI is shocking. I wouldn't touch it, regardless of brand.

Having said that, the hybrid OS/CPU thing is pretty cool. But just as the iPad has been criticised for having no "direction", so this Lenovo seems to be somewhat schizophrenic. Can't decide what it is.

How much weight/bulk/cost/power are you really saving? How often do you need to carry both your tablet (which no-one seems to know why they would even need yet, according to the iPad critics) AND the notebook? Why not carry both if necessary? Or buy a tablet and a cheap netbook?... or just the notebook, period?

Like the iPad is criticised for, the Lenovo seems to be trying to solve a problem no-one has yet. And it's screen is no better than the the iPad for ebooks.

Why isn't Lenovo suffering the same scrutiny as the iPad, and claimed to be "disappointing", and "mediocre"? The fact is, it's expensive, late, and slow. If that's what the iPad is up against, it's game over man.

Sorry, I really thought with all the teeth gnashing that there was something more compelling out there. Wow, Apple really is gonna win again.

If the iPad had all of the above features mentioned in Engadgets Article, I would have no problem dropping the 500 bucks for it at launch.

Maybe, just maybe, they will announce it in 4.0 and give it to the iPad before its released. As for me, I won't by an iPad until these features come to fruition.

So Apple drops the camera on the iPod touch, then the camera on the iPad. What IS up with Apple and cameras lately?

Software features? Yes, for sure! OS 4.0 is badly needed, and it won’t be the last. 4.0 might even ship with the iPad, but if not, it shouldn’t be too long after. (Just based on 3.1 being out a while now.)

Hardware features? Remotely possible (if some component isn’t yet solidified, but becomes so shortly, or if the software for it just wasn’t ready for the keynote). Possible but VERY unlikely. Don’t hold out too much hope. (But Apple did surprise iPod Touch owners by unlocking hidden Bluetooth long after they shipped. Weird things do happen!)

Snipped your neocon nonsense and ask you if you'll be attending the next Tea Party. Would you like a "top 10 worsts" from other tech sources, because they'll only echo the same thing (albeit perhaps in a different order).

He wasn’t criticizing Ariana Huffington—he said “tech commentary” specifically. Just that one article. He’s probably no more neocon than you or I.

Um, that doesn't make any sense. The AppleTV, much like the iPad, has no optical drive. In fact, no Macs have Blu-Ray IIRTWC (if I remember the whining correctly).

Given this line of thinking, it's more likely there will be a version of the iPhone OS for PCs than the AppleTV. :p

Yeah, it’s probably just code that’s lingering in there because the different touch OS flavors are all variations on Mac OS X.

(Isn’t it time for a better OS name than iPhone OS? How about "Mac OS X" and "Touch OS X"?)

I’d like video in chat in an iPad.

I’d LOVE video chat in my next iPhone!

That bezel frame gives you a way to hold the iPad without pressing buttons, (and probably doubles the battery volume too). Having no border only works when you can grip the whole device from both sides in one hand: a small device like an iPod.

And a border means room for a camera some day :)

you don't think they could make it recognize the difference between a thumb holding it and a finger gesture? I would buy an iPad, I won't buy an iFrame.

Wow, thanks. I'm not totally convinced on the 4 box touch interface, but it could definitely grow on me.

Wow, I never would have thought a single iPad could handle all that 4 boxes could throw at it:)

On a more serious note, that Lenovo is a good concept but the tablet UI looks and performs like crap. For the starting price of $1000, you can't put it in the same category as an iPad (even if it includes the second computer).

I wonder why Apple scrapped the camera idea from the iPad (and the real reason for the iPod touch)? Interesting stuff.

You know that question, "If you could have lunch with anyone, who would it be?" - ya, I want to get inside Steve's mind.

* The Lenovo can handle flash (as a stand alone tablet or with the keyboard as a full OS).
* Apple offers a proprietary dock used to attach a keyboard and you'll have to buy that, because it doesn't come with the iPad. And unlike the Lenovo, it doesn't lock into the tablet part to close flat as a solitary unit. Basically, you'll be fumbling with the tablet part and the keyboard dock.
* When you attach the keyboard to the tablet, you geta FULL OS (Windows 7) with the Lenovo.

Please, if Apple developed this AMAZING device, you would be singing a different story. Kudos to Lenovo, now that is innovation, and design at it's best. Apple take note.

Every single person that has actually used it (even the disappointed ones) has said that the screen, form factor, and bezel are great!

The much ridiculed iPad name may also have been a last minute deal as well...Apple owns the copyrights to iSlate....Apple knew the HP Slate would beat them out the gate,

Excellent analysis in this post. One problem with that theory is that this overhyped Lenovo product is called ideaPAD.

By the way, the HP Slate looks WAY better than the Lenovo. It's the same price as iPad, it's a good size, and has a real OS. To my eyes it's widescreen looks a little too wide, but then the iPad is too old school.

The problem with the HP is that it is also late, and still somewhat vaporware when it comes to its overall user experience.

Yes, in some cases, for some apps, it could theoretically tell the difference. Not in all cases, and it would be wrong some of the time. Intended touches would be lost. And there’s NOTHING they could do to change that your thumb would hide what was under it from view.

There’s no way to predict where people want to hold it, and Apple wants people to be able to hold it any which way. What if where you want to hold your thumb blocks the incoming-message count, or the missile button, or the jump button, or the search button, or whatever? How does it know to ignore the touch? And even if it does know, what happens when you want that button? You shift your grip? You’d be constantly shifting your grip while using the thing.

Having a device where you almost always block off part of the the screen would be a terrible design. The iPad is meant to feel natural and comfortable. Something as simple as holding it should be just that: simple.

We’re not talking huge margin. It’s the width of my thumb. And it’s not wasted space anyway, since it adds battery volume and a place for the home button. (And who knows? A camera one day?)
