The smartwatch market will grow, others will compete, and even though Apple busted open the market, it will be necessary for them to try and stay ahead of the pack.

So while I wouldn't necessarily expect something as rapid as iPhone updates, I doubt we will see more than 2 years between Watch iterations, maybe less.

Also, the Apple Watch 2 will have a 4K screen.

4k screen? On a watch? Bs and useless

I'm thinking 18 months to two years. Any sooner and they'll still be fulfilling preorders of THIS gen when they start announcing the NEXT one.

Also, they'll probably call it The New Apple Watch, then Apple Watch (3rd gen), then Apple Watch Air.

lol @ 4k on this watch. What a waste of battery life

I have to wonder how much thinner they can go while keeping the digital crown at a usable size.

I'll be amused when MacRumours Buying Guide changes the :apple:Watch to "Caution" in a couple months.

Just guessing, but I think they will update the hardware yearly. I'd like to see it be thinner (it's pretty bulky) and faster (many apps are painfully slow to load information). Battery life may or may not improve.

Loving it so far though.

I wish they could make an always-on screen that still looks as beautiful. Wishful thinking, I know

Depends. If the phone is what handles most of the computing power, then upgrading the watch won't need to be as frequent. Simply upgrading your phone will yield noticeable results.

Im not sure if its going to be a yearly cycle or 2 years or 18 months. But do you think they will update it like the iphones? Same design for 2 years then change design? With hardware upgrade like s1 chip every year?

Iphone 3g, 3gs

4, 4s

5, 5s

6, 6s

Except that both the iPhone and iPad got redesigns in the 2nd year.

Exactly what i was asking, will the watch have a redesign every 2 years

Even if the watch gets a new design or faster guts, I believe the first generation of bands/straps will still work. I can't imagine that they'll want to support 38mm and 42mm bands in all the existing and future styles and models PLUS those for a new body style. Like I said in another thread, the band is necessary for the watch to work, so it's not like supplying cases for older iPhones.

I'm buying the prettiest watch I can find afford, hoping it will keep me happy longer (it is jewelry, after all), thus saving me money in the long run.

I doubt annual updates will be necessary. I would expect them more along the lines of computers -- they'll release a new one when there's enough to change.

Phones get updated annually because a lot changes in a year for phone stuff. Better cell connections, WiFi improvements, Bluetooth, camera quality, speed of processors and memory, price of memory and flash storage, new tech like Touch ID, etc. Not as much of that is used or is as important on this, which is an extension of your phone. The iPad gets those updates because very similar parts are developed for iPhones and they're good Christmas gifts.

Ugggg. Why do people do this ? Pure speculation :(

As long as they keep the band the same, I am cool. I just got a Milanese loop last week. I really want to get a link bracelet as well, but if it is not useable for Apple Watch 2, I do not want to get it. Nobody would know this anyway so I should just enjoy my white sport band and this Milanese Loop.

think of the big jump from the thick, heavy, underpowered, slow original iPad to iPad 2. that's where I see Apple Watch 2.

I think they'll just do like the Apple TV and call it the Apple Watch every year and then specifically refer to it as "2nd Generation" in support documents and such.

As for upgrade frequency, I'm not sure what to think. It might also be like the Apple TV with a longer cycle, but it's hard to tell. For this initial version since it launched at a strange time of year they might wait until autumn 2016.

As for personal upgrade cycles, I think ~5% will upgrade every year, 25% every two years, 40% every three years, 25% every four years, and ~5% every five years or longer. I see myself in the 3-4 year camp unless they do something significant with health sensors or battery life or ability to keep the screen on at all times. But I just don't see year to year innovation in this product, nor significant design changes aside from possibly different case materials/colors and new bands designs/colors, so there's not much point for them to make a new version every single year.

New colors and materials this fall, then a new model next March/April.

I just want the crown to be closer to center, and better sensors, that's all. I'm sold regardless:apple:Can I place my order yet?:D

I think you misunderstood my meaning. The iPhone 3G (the 2nd iPhone) had a different design than the first one. The iPad 2 had a different design than the first one. It was only starting with the third iterations that they started recycling designs. We could very likely. see a different body in the Apple Watch 2.

I think they will continue to improve the first gen and add additional functionality through software updates and release a new model next April with a slimmer footprint, faster processor and possibly a camera for FaceTime

Let's just hope that we get native apps a decent amount of time before we get the new hardware. It'd be annoying to finally get native apps and then kind of need a newly-released second generation watch to make the most of them.
