I call BS...

1. WatchOS2 is in beta now and will be most likely complete by end of summer (September). To say Apple would take 6+ months to develop an already released dev beta is stretching it. 2016 is six months off and Apple will sure not be releasing any new watch in January nor hold WatchOS2 till mid 2016. If the article said WatchOS "3" i'd believe it a bit more.

2. These features sound more like a fan wishing for things... FaceTime? come on now you're really pushing the battery life. It's a wish/fancy list.

3. This reminds me of the iPad Pro it's been talked about for almost 2yrs with people writing fancy wishlist and it wasn't until recently hard evidence of a actual iPad Pro factory mold/cast being fact.

I doubt Apple would leak any if or talk about a possibly Apple Watch 2 at this point, it would hurt sales. Why by a watch now when a new one is not far off. Remember when rumors of a new iPhone earbuds with heart rate monitoring was in development... and companies like LG jumped on that rumor and actually created one. This is just a throw out so rumors and see what sticks article.

just my opinion...

Actually, they would care. Because the handful of ultra-wealthy people I know didn't get wealthy by buying $10k Apple watches, nor would they waste their money on such a useless vanity item. The people who did buy it aren't as rich as you think they are, and will probably be quite pissed off at how short of lifespan Apple Watch will have.

non-anecdotal source on this?? no, right?

Bad news for the early adopters.

I've never understood comments like these, buying the one version of hardware does not prevent one from buying the next. I've done this with the iPhone, iPad, and MacBooks for sometime now. I usually end up selling my older edition to pay for the next or give it to a relative. In fact, most early adopters probably buy the next hardware version anyways.

Then they deserve to feel that way and are terrible at managing their money. Spending that much on a consumer tech product in an age when such devices are more disposable than ever is idiotic unless you have a level of income and wealth that makes such a purchase akin to a regular Joe buying the Sport Watch.

I think you have it backwards, the ultra wealthy absolutely spend ridiculous amounts of money on vanity items. Your regular well-off person who lives in a million dollar house but drives a Prius typically don't.

well planned business model by Apple (as usual), they will still sell millions more by the end of this year of the current 1st generation model through the holidays, then release the new one around March next year  (nothing new here)

You can already send and receive messages when on wifi. At least, I'm able to. My Watch quite happily receives and sends messages when not in range of my iPhone. Just won't let me use any of the apps that require my phone (native apps will fix that) and I also don't seem to be able to pick up email notifications without my phone. But texting and sending Emoji/drawings/heartbeat/tap work fine without being in range of my iPhone.

I'd be happy if they just officially made it waterproof so I can swim with it. Of course, I'm sure I'm in the minority in terms of what people are looking for in the watch.

I think this is a mistake. What about those people who spent $10K on the first generation Apple Watch? They get obsolete just like that? Apple Watch 2 should come out in 2018. People are still finding about its existence. At the end, it's just a watch, not a smartphone which we need to be buying every now and then.

They'll be as obsolete as previous-generation iPhones: not obsolete at all. People pay more for cars which also receive yearly updates. People would've considered yearly phone updates excessive not too long ago.

I should have known the day I got my watch would be the day rumours about the next one came out :)
Not really bothered though because I'll get to enjoy V1 mine for a year and then pick up a V2 if it has new features that appeal.

but seriously, who wants to take a FaceTime call on their watch? Hold your arm up to face-level for 30 seconds and see how it feels, and now imagine talking to someone for minutes like that. Madness.

Makes sense. Sure, it's easy to hold a phone in front of your face for 10 minutes but as soon as you make it smaller, lighter, and strap it to your wrist that becomes WAY harder.

Im not so sure about the rumored WiFi part in the article. My steel  Watch can use Siri without my phone around and if I'm near WiFi. And Kevin Lynch said during the keynote last week that 3rd party apps can use WiFi and bypass the iPhone to receive new data. It doesn't take much to assume Apple is implementing this in their own apps and across the system. And wouldn't the Find my Watch just be an extension of this? It just seems the 1st gen Watch is already pretty mature..

I love my Apple Watch, not only because of what it does, but what it doesn't do. It doesn't have facilities to surf the internet, to watch films, to FaceTime people, because it's just not a great experience.

I can see why a camera may be useful for apps like Snapchat, but seriously, who wants to take a FaceTime call on their watch? Hold your arm up to face-level for 30 seconds and see how it feels, and now imagine talking to someone for minutes like that. Madness.

Hope it offers improvements in other areas as well, as if the main selling point is a camera I for one won't be upgrading.

I'd rather take a FaceTime video call than try to surf the Internet on that tiny screen. It's good to see who you're talking to even if it's a small image. It's not as though you will have to do it. And it's not as though you would have to do it with everyone. That's the great thing about choice.

So if my daughter is halfway across the world, as she is sometimes, I'd love to see her when she calls.

But the WiFi triangulation feature is good. When you're running, or even just walking, it will be better able to keep track without needing the phone, which is a major complaint today. No doubt, there will be a number of other feature updates as well.

But let's remember that this is just a rumor now.

Man, you really backed me into a corner there. Stellar rebuttal, I surrender.

Agreed. Except I would argue the Edition Watch is a stupid purchase even for someone with unlimited cash.

Your are right. But the novelty wore off quickly even before some customers got one. Some people expected a longer product lifetime cycle. It is a pricey product that most people won't buy every year (beside other potential Apple purchases like iPhones/iPads/Macs). I bet a co worker of mine, who was waiting weeks for his watch, won't be happy about the news that his brand new apple watch will be outdated soon.

Given there is no date for the new watch, might not be outdated for a while.

The report claims that Apple has conducted market research and determined that, despite early concerns, most customers are satisfied with their Apple Watch's battery life, allowing Apple engineers to focus their efforts on other areas besides battery improvements.

Maybe Apple should worry more about the people who didn't buy a watch rather than the people who already thought it was good enough?

even if it goes away after one iteration, apple still needs to do it. anyone with even slight knowledge of the dick tracy comics growing up needs to see it happen.

I was wondering if anyone else would associate this with Dick Tracy. The wristwatch TV communicator:
