Ok... I don't know much about this time... I was going off what you said Gruber said. Scratch that. Let me start over...

Does Mark Gurman have people feeding him information?

If so... then what is Mark Gurman good at? He's just reporting what other people are telling him, right?

I could do that too. It doesn't require any special skills.

It requires connections, a task that takes years to build and weeding out the people that feed false information.

Intersting how many people want a "slimmer design." The Apple Watch is already thinner than most mechanical watches, unless you compare it to cheap quartz movement watches.

Otherwise, having LTE on AW seems interesting. I really wonder how it will affect battery life, and how decent reception will be. Having the option to not carry a phone at all, and just take AW + AirPods is a pretty interesting thought.

I don't know what watches you're looking at. The :apple:watch is thicker than 80% of normal mechanical watches.

Should we be concerned about having a LTE radio on our wrists and near our head 24/7?
(obv we don't use our phones at the same proximity or cadence)

Not at all. Those same radiowaves are around us 24/7 even if you don't own a phone. The amount of energy required to cause damage would require several lifetimes of having your phone to your head for years.

My other thought with an LTE Apple Watch, is that I hope we see the Watch become more independent in general. Apps not needing to connect to the iPhone (being able to go straight to the internet over wifi instead). Really make the Watch an independent device (whether or not it has LTE).

Here's what I don't understand...

People always say Mark Gurman is good at reporting on future Apple products.

But he obviously has a reliable source somewhere, right? He's not figuring this stuff out on his own. He doesn't seem to possess some special skill.

I'd be good at reporting future products if I had someone feeding me information! :p

Gurman once explained that he got close with a few apple employees in California who I think are his sources for most info. He’s had pretty good info, and usually from Cupertino, whereas Kuo I think is from supply chain in China. He made it sound like it wasn’t a big deal to get close with these few people. He’s really had some great scoops over the years too.

Adding cellular connectivity will surely mean reducing the battery size and drawing more power to run the device. The battery is pretty bad as it is, so I don’t see how this can be that much of a positive. I would have liked to have seen a new form factor and vastly improved battery life in order for me to seriously consider replacing my 1st Gen.

The battery on Series 2 was greatly improved. People are always talking about how they have greater than 50% at the end of the day. Not sure how you can claim “the battery is pretty bad as it is”.

Only one thing will temp me to replace my Apple watch: Extensible watch band capability.

If they open the data port to allow watch bands to add new features like extra battery, or new sensors then I'll get one.

Otherwise my series 0 is working just fine as is.

so people who buy it will have to have pay a carrier if they want to use the LTE service... oh man, another bill...I don't like it but I'm sure it will still sell an S load of units.

Even with LTE, the iPhone will still require an iPhone. Apple isn't going to give up tying you to the far more profitable iPhone in exchange for some extra Apple Watch sales.

WatchOS doesn't support loading of apps without the iPhone and doing so would require all kinds of headaches. Arguably the #1 function of the Apple Watch is notifications and they don't do much good if you don't have your phone to follow up with them. Yes, you can reply to text messages from the watch itself but that's cumbersome at best and not a great solution.

Not gonna happen. Enjoy your current Series 0 for another several years.

It requires having connections, plus having the trust of the people giving you the information. The average person most certainly does not have those things.

I think the value add lies in processing the information given to you into digestible little chunks.

For example, your sources might only be able to tell you what parts Foxconn has ordered, and each party might be privy onto to a small part of Apple's entire supply chain. The onus is then on you to figure out how Apple may intend to use those parts and what new features they might possible support in the future. To piece together all the tiny jigsaw pieces and see the big picture.

I doubt it's as straightforward as simply regurgitating whatever information is fed to you.

It requires connections, a task that takes years to build and weeding out the people that feed false information.

Thank you all. That's the explanation I needed!

Apple just hates our thickness requests.

iPhone
Us: "We don't need a razor thin phone, we'd prefer a larger battery!"
Apple: "No"

Apple Watch
Us: "We want a THINNER watch, the battery life is already awesome!"
Apple: "Whatever"

You are going to be waiting a while longer. Apple will be adding more sensors and other hardware before it gets thinner.

I agree. Thinner to me mainly applies for aesthetics. But functionality with the Apple Watch is where it matters most and Apple won't sacrifice technology for the sake of joys making it thinner. I personally have no issue with the current thickness of the Apple Watch, as long as Apple continues to improve its capabilities and functionality, that's all I can Ask for.

This would explain why there haven’t been any product leaks.

Shameful Apple. I was looking for a better reason to start wearing mine again.

At least a change in design. LTE is long overdue, everyone has been talking about this since AW1.

Maybe.

But given that Apple has sold more smartwatches than anyone else can even dream of (true smartwatches... not cheap fitness bands)... and there is an ever-growing list of OEMs who are NOT selling smartwatches anymore...

... I'd say Apple is selling plenty. :p

I agree with that and I bet the bean counters at apple do to. With the trend of "thin is in" at apple, I'd figure the watch would join that trend by now and also lose some bezel. Ill wait for the redesign.

Form factor change is fine, as long as bands still work from the old models.

But will the watch have call and SMS capability on its own? LTE is different from voice and SMS, is it not? Unless your watch and phone can forward regular calls and texts back and forth to each other over internet? If you can't leave your phone at home, what would be the point of an LTE watch?

Regarding data prices, I don't see more than a $5/mo addon being worth it. How much data could one use on a watch? Assuming you can't tether other devices.

I doubt you'd be able to tether to the watch.

It makes business sense to make the watch tether because a lot of people will be replacing an android or iphone with the apple watch. Apple will make a lot of money if they push the watch with ipad mini. It will give you more freedom to always have the watch with full connectivity while having the tablet to do regular app stuff but you don't need to take the tablet with you everywhere.

Bigger battery same thickness please

But the battery is fine? How long do you need it to last? My S0 finishes up the day with about 20% left, and I’ve heard the Series 2 has much better battery life than the Series 0. I think you’re probably expecting too much from a smart watch like this, it’ll never have a battery life that lasts a week. You don’t need the battery to last longer than about 12 hours surely.

From the OS to Apple's idea of what's correct, nothing conforms with a round display here.

Are you serious? The app icon view looks like it was designed for a round screen. But I see what you mean about the rest of the OS.

Who cares it’s the bottom of the watch.
I care.
[doublepost=1502749668][/doublepost]
Why? Who cares if a watch gets scratched on the bottom?
Again. I care. You don't, but i do. Enuff said.

I'd like them to offer Sapphire with the aluminum watch. I actually prefer alum to steel and sad that I can't get a better face.
Sapphire with alum would be nice, but maybe they implement the whole watch with that kind of material...the glass part i mean...fo example the bottom part of the watch.

We don't need a mini iPhone. Watch Series 0 should have had what Series 1 have and LTE connection. Apple is on the safe side, which is boring. They ae not challenging themselves.

Engineer: I've made a Watch with GPs and LTE connection.
Apple: lets separate these features, one feature per year.

I really would love to see futuristic features, better apps, better design that looks like a real watch.

I want one now! I am ready for it.
Hope the Apple Watch is ready for me now :p

Good reporting is partially about being able to find good sources.

There's no way anyone's gunna be able to pry an iPhone out of an iPhone junky's hand or pocket and tell them to go naked with just a A-watch. Apple doesn't understand the addicts it's created.
