Apple Watch charger melting.
Wife with second degree burn.
Goes back to sleep.
:D
hhaha she gave me crap about that bigtime this morning. :) We've been married for 18 years, what can I say. :) I have my priorities.

In the dark room @middle of the night, we just unplugged everything and threw it onto a granite nightstand tray we have. I didn't see the extent of the "melting" and my wife's burn till morning. As for the degree of the burn, I'm not a doctor. All I know is it hurts and formed a blister. Wife is a tough cookie, after the initial scream she let out, she went downstairs to get some ice for her finger, unbeknownst to me. I was snoozing away peacefully while she was staring daggers at me I'm sure.

Is that even an official apple watch charger? Cuz it doesn’t look like.
Yes. It absolutely is. It came with one of our apple watches, not sure which...I've had a few generations. This is the exact unit (of course the one on the apple website is less melted looking):

Oh wow. I never saw that before with a OEM Apple Watch charger. I used to work for Apple. I assume that you got escalated to the safety team. Engineering has the final say on that, hopefully they cover the damage. Make sure you get good documentation of any medical treatment you received.

Update. Got a call back from the senior advisor who had been handling my case. He said he was going to transfer me to customer care. During the transfer my call dropped.

Hoping they call me back.
Make sure you email your advisor saying that happened.

I imagine they will replace both the watch and the charger. I don't think they would risk only replacing one or the other, when there's a chance the other one was really at fault, and then the same thing happens.

That would be very nice of them to do. I think at this point I'd hope for at least a replacement of the charger... and an inspection/repair of watch to give me the all-clear. I have no way to know if the charger or the watch's power-regulation setup is at fault.

If Apple offers to replace your wife, do not accept. More than likely you would get a refurbished wife.

Last night I woke up to my wife letting out a quick scream at 3am. Apparently, she had woken up and wanted to pick up her apple watch to check the time. The OEM Apple charger had gotten so hot that it burned her finger pretty badly (blister already beginning to form) that she dropped the watch/charger right back onto the nightstand in pain. We unplugged everything and went back to sleep.

We woke up this morning to her Apple Watch Series 4 not powering on, and upon inspection I realized that her OEM charger puck had gotten so hot that the plastic melted and started to peel away exposing the charging coils beneath! Unfortunately she doesn't have apple care on the watch. I've never heard of this happening before. Is there any recourse through apple to at least get the device / charger replaced?

I got an aluminium SE and it came with a plastic charger cable**, and I also purchased* a second charger cable** for the office and it's metal.

* actually, I misread the product page and thought it didn't came with a charger cable** at all, so I ordered a second one straight away...
** actually, Apple calls this "cable", not "charger". The "charger" is the thing that goes into the power socket.
