Apple Watch Chief Kevin Lynch Now Leading Apple Car Efforts

The car is an Apple Watch on wheels, right? How hard could it be? ?

For all the technological improvements that cars have had over the year, the primary design hasn't really changed. I think there is potential for a company like Apple to rethink the entire car experience using their expertise in software and manufacturing, not unlike what the iPhone did for the smartphone industry.

For instance, a car could be reimagined as a room on wheels, which can be customised to whatever layout you want, since you no longer need a driver in front.

We need to look beyond Tesla, see what’s next? What people forget is that with electrification, the car will become a household’s biggest electric appliance, which has consequences for power grids and charging infrastructure. This means that all energy saving considerations are applicable, such as the smaller the appliance, the less kWh needed.

If it makes them 'more mobile', consumers have opted for ‘downsizing’ before. There is a remarkable similarity between Personal Communication and Personal Mobility. They are both about bridging distances. Think of: providers (carmakers), user platforms (ride-hailing) and bandwidth (infrastructure).

Steve Jobs realized that new technology should bring APPLE to altogether reformat the phone. It had to be rectangular, flat, have rounded edges with specific radius, combine different functions, have a (relatively) big screen and no keys. Besides swapping the fossil engine for electric drive, Elon Musk (Tesla) NEVER came to reformatting the electric car… IMO, Teslas look boringly conventional.

Now that literally every carmaker and AV developer is thinking in terms of 'real estate on wheels', a newcomer should come up with some sort of 'smart-appliance on wheels' - practical, efficient, a joy to use, safe and be (SAE Level 4) autonomous. Someone should brief Lynch.
