After being announced to appear at Milan's Salone Del Mobile Design Fair earlier in the week, today the Apple Watch was displayed for the first time to the public, outside of a retail store or pop up shop, at the design fair (via Macitynet) [Google Translate].

On display at the Carlo e Camilla restaurant in Segheria, the Watch is displayed in long rows of glass-topped tables, identical to its presentation in Apple's own retail locations. The fair is even allowing customers to experience the same try-on appointments happening in retail stores since pre-orders began one week ago.

Interestingly, as the Watch is displayed at the Carlo e Camilla in Italy, pre-orders for the wearable aren't available to Italian customers due to Italy not being included in the first wave of launch countries for the Watch. There to experience the event is senior vice president of worldwide marketing at Apple, Phil Schiller, and Marc Newson, who works part time at Apple as a designer alongside Jony Ive.

Although Apple has yet to confirm pre-order numbers for the Watch, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes the device could have sold more than 2.3 million units during the initial pre-order wave. While the exact number remains a mystery, stock of the Apple watch definitely remains constrained as pre-orders for all devices slipped to a 4-6 week dispatch date, and beyond, only 6 hours after going live.

Phil stands out like a blue sore thumb, in a sea of fashionable black.

Wow, apple's really trying to put itself right next to the well known fashion brands, good for them. :D

lol at his oversized shirt, that's how one knows he's really american :p

That's how branding is in most of US. Many stores don't sell fitted clothing. Not until you get into designer wear. But who wants to spend $60 on a tee? Else go to outlets for half price of less.

Sure my clothes aren't baggy, but they aren't restrictive like a lot of Europeans wear.

My God, I love Apple just as much as everyone else does but this is crazy. They're hyping up their watch like its a new miracle to man kind. I sure hope the watch doesn't flop for Apple's sake.

Are we getting excited yet?

The Watch is coming, the Watch is coming!

Apple has seeded the requisite few to key, highly visible people world wide and the show is ready to commence.

Do I pony up or wait for Ver.2? Or 3? Or... Hmmmmmm :D

You would prefer they kept it a secret?

By getting it out there and branding it fashion, timepiece, fitness device, etc., they are marketing it in a way that will hopefully appeal to many different kinds of people. That's what they should be doing.

Schiller looks like a slob who spends his time coding and eating Doritos.

He sure doesn't look like a NY/LA/Europe marketing guy. Just goes to show that the clothes don't make the man.

Or, as in software, it's what's above the neck that counts.

How?
Because Apple has paid millions to advertise/display/promote their Apple Watch?

And they should. How is that make them fail? Or perhaps you think there is a magic and rainbow behind every success?

Is a restaurant not close to the high-class shopping district and really far from the design fair. Is not very convenient to get there and I'm sure Apple can afford any hotel, shop or restaurant in Milan even during the design fair so I wonder why they've chosen that place.

I'm going there in a couple of hours after work, if the wait is not too long I'll get a chance to try the Watch.
I'm not going to buy it this year, but I really want to see it

For the complainers about delivery time and having to wait:

analyst estimate 2.3 million (Let's just say it's close)

2.3 million / 6 weeks = 383,333 watches per week
=383,333 per week / 168 hours (= 24 hours incl. Saturdays and Sundays)
= 2,282 watches produced per hour
= 2,282 watches per hour /50 labour minutes (people take breaks etc.)
= 46 watches per minute

or almost a watch per second.

Not happening!

Just an illustration of how good the manufacturing logistics are, if they can get to those numbers.

We do not know how many steps, variations per watch etc. machines and people are involved.

Schiller? Where the heck is Angela Ahrendts? Seems to me she has been conspicuously absent in this product rollout.

There really nothing much to display. One watch, similar model. More to band and color display.
