I'm torn on this move.. they're putting Hermes' logo over theirs.
All in a bid to become more legitimate in the fashion scene.

Reminds me of the Motorola iTunes Phone strategy before the iPhone.

Although on the other side of the fence, the fashion scene is all about name, not so much technical brilliance.
Apple has yet to make a name for themselves there.

Is this the way to go though? I'm not sure.

It's like the LG Prada phone back in the day. Doing that basically says that LG admits it can't be fashionable on its own merit and must rely on someone else's brand to make them 'fashionable'.

Apple is now boxing into a corner - it's saying not a real fashion brand and needs an Hermes to be 'fashionable'.

I dunno.

This is just what's worrying me about Apple. Sure, they are still making some great tech... but I think Apple purists would say the best days lay behind them, and it's like they're trying to fill in that shortfall by instead appealing to more fashion conscious customers with design statements rather than truly great products.

I want to be clear I'm a very content iPhone 6 Plus and MacBook Air owner so Apple through and through at this point.. but honestly, doesn't the magic seem to have gone a little bit?

I hear that to get the leather so soft, the seamstress had to cut the leather from a bulls testicles, whilst it was making beef with Daisy.

Surely that justifies the price tag!

I understand the appeal of the Apple Watch, even though I don't have one because it does not fit my needs.

But, I must say, I don't understand why someone would buy this when you could just buy an actual quality watch for the same price. Sure, but an Apple Watch as well, but this seems silly unless the Watch is an integral part of your life, I guess. Or the only watch you wear. I just don't get it, but I'm not really knocking those who get it.

3 times the amount of a regular one to get a watch face with a name on it? What am I missing here????

It's $450 more than the Stainless Steel with Classic Band. Replacement Hermes leather bands easily cost that much.

This whole watch thing makes less and less sense as an Apple product with every passing day. Tim Cook's tenure continues to make Apple's lineup less and less appealing.

I don't think I've ever seen Apple's Macbook Pro line so long in the tooth. The obsession with the watch is driving every other product line into the ground. Bicker with me all you want, I won't hear it. Ridiculous.

Apple used to inspire minds, people would buy their products to use them as their primary tools. Now all we've got is these offerings like the watch, and the only people buying it want to look "cool", where the product itself is mostly useless.

Where have all my top of the line tools gone?
Overpriced, over-polished, specialized metal pieces with sapphire screens. Mindless materialism.

Prove me wrong, and do it soon, Tim.

With luxury watches, you pay for exclusivity. But exclusivity is measured with craftsmanship -- the movement, the finish, the dial, etc.

What's exclusive about this watch? The band? It's the same watch face with a slightly different digital display. The components are the same and I suspect production cost is as well.

There's certainly a price premium, I just don't see the exclusivity that price premium is supposed to represent.

It's a branding exercise.

I have yet to see a compelling reason to own a smartwatch. I'm waiting, but it ain't here yet. What's the killer app?

I own two watches, both analog. One is my grandfather's pocket watch with his Phi Beta Kappa fob. The other is a Mickey Mouse watch I used to teach my son to tell analog time. I've not used either one in over a year.

the thing is, the iphone had a compelling reason for existence. The value prop was there from the get go... internet in your pocket...a wide screen ipod...and a revolutionary mobile phone..remember?
similarly, the ipad was a cheap way for people to do basic computing (facebook, basic word processing and internet browsing)...that people were using netbooks to fulfill.

the Apple watch... 10 months after release still doesn't really have a solid value prop.. I've been using it since launch day and I like it...but I find myself not missing it if I don't wear it. Not in the same way that I miss my iPhone or iPad if I don't have them for a few days/weeks.. Because it doesn't really have a compelling feature.

What's your product suggestion that has a compelling reason for existence?

I don't have one, yet - and that doesn't mean I have to make a product, now.
I think that was the pressure that Tim Cook was facing - Wall Street needed a new product, right at that time. So the Watch it was.
Steve Jobs didn't have that pressure. It took him a long time just to make an iPod.

Apple's selling more Macs than at any time in its existence. It's growing in a shrinking PC market.

I do think Apple is doing a great job with its macbook line
The new 12" Macbook is amazing - if it was $999 I would buy one.
The line up is not very consistent right now though - I wish they would clean it up a bit.
Just have a Macbook, and a Macbook Pro. I'm sure that's coming.

I think technology currently is at a state where the leaps and bounds have transformed into baby steps. Major refreshes have become refinements. Look at the iPhone for example. Original iPhone to iPhone 3G- announcing an App Store. Major change. iPhone 5 to iPhone 6- larger screen and better camera? Baby steps in comparison.

Nice watch face! That would be a welcome design to have on a rectangular display, although it doesn't leave corners open for complications.

The band looks like fine quality, and the designer name adds that status-symbol a la Armani or anyone else (even Apple itself is a bit of a designer).

I understand the appeal of the Apple Watch, even though I don't have one because it does not fit my needs.

Someone would buy this because it gives them pleasure. There are times in life to splurge - treat yourself to a fine bottle of wine, a designer jacket that cuts a nice figure, a luxury car to pamper you on your daily commute... or perhaps a not-so-common Apple Watch to glance at throughout the day. These things are just that - glorified organized stardust... but if it puts a smile on your face ever time you enjoy what you worked so hard for, even if it is but symbolic, so be it.

put all the leather bands you want... still just a made in Taiwan gadget watch. Have to be insane to wear this as a dress watch.

Perhaps a luxury Apple Watch edition would sell better if it was hand assembled in Switzerland, or even Detroit (or for the really well healed, "Designed by Apple in California. Assembled on the International Space Station."). Such a limited edition could indeed fetch an increased price just based on cost of labor alone.... would it make business sense? Probably about as much as the gold edition.

I do not buy leather products. However, what I like about these is the watch face. I don't think we are given particularly nice faces with the Apple Watch. Especially those that buy the link bracelet models, the faces just don't really match the price and look.

I find those straps naff.

Taste is a funny thing. Steve Jobs had it. Microsoft don't. Neither does Tim Cook.

If Apple brought out a hybrid mechanical round watch with a digital overlay, I might be interested.

I've been saying that since these smartwatches were first introduced. Thankfully a company was listening to my ply as one by the name of Kario has introduced such a watch. Though it quite doesn't have the app collection the Apple Watch has, it contains everything that I could possibly need. The Kario is mechanical watch with an LCD display overlay and it's even quite nice looking with many styles to choose from, I bought the silver one you see below. There is also a smart-band option available that adds even more functionality, you can also buy the T-Band, the name of the smart-band, separately and add it to another third party watch, I have one on my Tag Huer Monaco. Anyway, check them out, I absolutely love mine and unlike these other smartwatches, you don't have to charge it every night, in fact it lasts between 3 - 4 days. This has got to be the biggest problem I had with my Apple Watch before returning it, I just couldn't own a watch that doesn't last at least a few days, let alone a full day. Which is what I experienced with my Apple Watch before I returned it, not once did it make it through an entire day with what I believed to be moderate use.

So this is what qualifies as "innovation" under the "leadership" of Tim Cook...

Pathetic.
So you look at this and you think it is what innovation looks like at Apple. Interesting...

That looks nightmarish to me.

Taste is a funny thing. I don't find two of the three of these bands suit my taste at all. But that doesn't mean others who like it have no taste. It just means their taste is different than mine.

Just because someone chooses a gold iPhone, or a pink gold Apple Watch doesn't make their taste worse than mine. Just different.

Incidentally, the Double Tour on the splash page at Apple's site looks very nice on the model's arm. But then again, she'd make almost anything look good, I suspect.
