While this decision does seem a little desperate on Apple's part, it's a move they can make without consequences. Now being the 800 lb. Gorilla they are, Apple is immune to the outcome of any side project as small as this.
I think it's a smart move. It's a signal to other fashion houses that if this category takes off, Apple can work with them. They don't need to go to Google to make an Android Wear watch like Tag Heuer or try to go it alone like Swatch.

And it also gives Apple a bit of gravitas in the high-end fashion world. If Hermés is willing to work with Apple (and even do co-branding) others might be willing to do the same. I think Apple sponsoring the Met Gala is an indication more of these partnerships are in the works (perhaps even beyond Watch). That event is the crème de la crème of the fashion industry. Anybody who's somebody in the fashion world attends that event.
 
Anyone knows if they come packaged in the traditional orange Hermes box (similar to when you buy the Hermes watch model)?
