Oh geez. You guys talking about in house movements really need to spend more time thinking about watch movements.
Patek, Vc and others have, for many years, used Lemania movements and JLC movements.
In my opinion, what is important about movements are quality, finishing, ingenuity and beauty of the movements; an in-house movement can be a piece of crap, and a well executed Lemania in the hands of Patek horologists can be incredibly beautiful.

Archie luxury seems to be some sort of a middle manager or used car salesman with an inflated sense of ego.
It's great that he bought his used Patek (for probably about 20k), but that doesn't make him the authority on watches.
There are many people with more experienced in watch collecting, more skilled in watch making and more well endowed in, well, cash to buy better watches than an entry level Patek.
I would know, because I also have an entry level Calatrava.

Many TAG movements were actually made by Sieko of all companies. Total rubbish.

Yes. I am a strong advocate of an in house movement. Audemars Piguet is next for me!

Fair enough, I'm a believer that a Rolex is enough to get street cred.

It all depends on whom you want credibility with I suppose. The Rolex is probably the best buy. Most everyone knows it, and so the resale is very high comparatively. The case is sturdy and can take a beating, and the movement is hard to disrupt. It's easy to service and repair. The oyster case keeps water out.

But

Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, or Vacheron Constantin if you can afford it.

That's a great watch to have.

FWIW he has a 5107 G, which on Chrono24 can be had for about 17.

On a PP you only take a 10-20% hit on resale, which is an issue to some, but shouldn't be! But the real advantage of buying pre-owned (with box and papers of course) is that someone else takes the pain of the first blemish.

I believe it will be more than that actually.
My model retailed for 29000 plus tax but I think pre owned sell for 23000 or lower from dealers.

Type your model number into Chrono24 and you can get a pretty good idea.

18-23000 used.
Loss of more than 10000 in about 2 years, or 33% ish.

Patek preservation of value is greatly exaggerated and probably won't hold true in the next 5-10 years.

You're ok. Keep the box. Keep the papers. Service as needed. But, you probably won't end up selling it anyway.

At least you're not the guy who lost 50-60% on an Omega.

Yeah I will never sell, so I'm not worried about it, but still 50-60% on Omega is probably not going to be 10k+ USD.
Oh well, I knew that watches are poor not investment vehicle, so it's not a problem but I find it kind of irritating that these things are selling for so much less than what I paid for.

You mean this?

It looks stunning, isn't it? :D
OMG! That's gorgeous!!!

I would love to see a version of the Apple Watch by Tiffany, with sterling silver case and links, and Tiffany blue accents on the face.
And I'm still waiting for the affordable polished gold plate case, for those who do not wear silver jewelry or accessories, as well as for those who want to coordinate a gold accessorized outfit. Maybe this partnership with Hermes will get Apple off its high horse:

But this talk of Tiffany's and other design house partnerships brings up an interesting point, it's one thing for these companies to produce watches that may all have the same cheap quartz movements inside, but the watch case designs themselves are all distinct. So what happens when all of these exclusive design houses are offering the exact same watch case strapped to their unique bands? Granted Tiffany would have to be a special run of sterling silver, which would go a lot further to justifying the co-brand than the Hermes does, but the others are not likely to have anything more special than the basic Apple designs. I'm not enough of a fashionista to know the answer to this, but do the big fashion designers typically share the same common off the shelf products as the basis for their integrated product designs?

Hermes may make gold-plated in-house watches, but I seriously doubt Apple will cannibalize their own $10,000-17,000 Edition models by offering affordable gold-plated AWs even in Hermes name.

I think Apple might target the wide range between the top-end Hermes and the low-end Edition. Of course, they might even consider going higher end and offer an Hermes Edition (since the Hermes bands are nicer than any of the Edition bands apart from not having gold trim).

I'm actually quite shocked that Hermes offers a gold plated watch. That really shows me that they're more of a leather company, rather than a watch company, and the Hermes watches are "fashion" watches.

That's Hermès exactly. They're entirely a leather company - perhaps the best in the world. Their watches are a leather accessory.

Yeah, I know they're known for leather, but I thought maybe they were at least trying. Even Ralph Lauren's watches are more serious.

I've seen an unboxing of the Double Tour and the Single Tour and both of them came in the square box.

Haven't seen one of the Cuff - maybe that's the one in the long box?

The Cuff in a long box? Talk about putting a square peg in a round hole!

Didn't someone mention that Hermes in-house Single Tour comes in a long box and their Double Tour and Cuff in a square box?

No because then you will have conflict issues on one Apple ID.

What conflict issues? I use the same Apple ID on my iPhone, 2 iPads, iPod touch, iMac and
MacBook Air. No conflict at all. I've also had two iPhones on my Apple ID at the same time while I was switching. But if I wanted to, I could have kept both iPhones on the same Apple ID indefinitely.

isn't there a 10 device limit, which is what i think he was referring to?

My single tour came in the square box. I've not seen anyone with a long box.

Not sure what the long box is for then. I searched for images of Hermes in-house cuffs and they appear to come in square boxes.

Perhaps the long box is a pre-production version that they decided not to use, as the Single Tour can fit in the square box just as easily. Some of Hermes' own Single Tours and bracelets are packaged in long boxes.

The watch box has to be square, because it has to contain the standard inner watch box made by Apple.

I think the long box was made just for bands, as it resembles the box for Apple bands. Unrealized concept art that was used in marketing.
