The picture with Ive and the others looks like an advert for a U.S. version of Ab Fab.

:D lolz!

. It might well work out for Apple, but I find this event off putting somehow.

Yep. A different, more vacuous appeal than Apple had even a few years ago. I hope the iMac doesn't get any more "fashionable" before I'm due to replace ours.

Btw, this was the line to get into the event. And the general public wasn't even allowed to try anything on. Paul Deneve was at this event so my guess is he was the one coordinating it.

Also there were two positive write-ups (one in The Guardian, the other Vogue UK) both written by women. My guess is Apple will be targeting women hard with this product.

I don't party with the fashion crowd, but can someone explain to me why the hell apple cares to persuade these types to sell the watch?

I mean everyone knows apple, and I daresay half of the planet knows what apple watch is

So wtf cares what Chanel or lagerfeld says about apples fashion accessory?
Am I to believe that they need the blessing of vogue to sell to high end prince's?

Good question.
Perception. Apple wants to change the perception of what the :apple: watch is. Because, as you may have heard, smartwatches are very hard to sell, no one seems to really need them. They are a solution in search for a problem.
Most people are simply not that eager to have yet another tech device on them. So Apple is a tech company doing something unusual : convincing their market that this not just yet another tech device, but a beautiful piece of jewelry enhanced with technology, and not the other way around. Meaning : "if you're not in the market for a smartwatch device but just looking for a nice watch, you might want to look at ours. And we'll throw in some sexy tech to sweeten the deal."

Therefore you need the Chanel and Lagerfelds of this world to help pass the message.

Karl Lagerfeld looks ready for the grave, and Anna Wintour looks like a bug, Jony could stand to get his clothes pressed for a big event, can't he afford a valet after the Jobs jet purchase. Funny how the "fashion" folks have little style or taste to begin with.

It's called marketing, and positioning.

I had no idea!

Why?

Well thought out response. I am of the opinion that this is weird and a little stuffy for apple. Idk.

Sir Ive is looking ever-increasingly rotund. Bad posture too, he is developing a hunch and something of a chicken's neck. Shame really, not long ago he appeared as if he were working out (perhaps), more healthy. Now he's made his first million it looks like the emphasis is focused firmly on the gullet.

LMAO.
First million. Are you serious?

Not quite as ostentatiously as Eddy Cue as he is big guy by nature. And Schiller has always been on the round side (though I think it's bit better under control now).

I once worked with a man who could wear a white suit with white shoes and leave work at the end of the day looking immaculate. It would look bad before I even made it to my front door in the morning.

It has built-in apps that designed to ease you into exercise. Yes, I must act and I hope it's precisely what make it fun to act.
Your post is so full of bitterness but thanks for trying. Trolls are just a dime a dozen these days. Worthless specie.

The only thing that eases me into exercises is the look in the mirror and my workout schedule. Neither do I have scales at home nor I do know my exact weight or my current pulse rate. The only thing I knew was that if I stick to my workout plan I'll see results eventually. Thus, I successfully managed to replace my fat belly with a sexy six pack within a year — without any tech gadgets.

I'm just telling you the truth with a trolling attitude.

I'd have thought nonconformity would be a better play for an industrial designer. For the European market at least. (Have you seen Phillipe Stark when he's out and about?)

I guess he could superficially dress up, but it would hurt his image more if it wasn't authentically him. The US consumer is more fixated with "image" and less so with authenticity, I'll give you that, but this event is in Paris.

So, when in Rome (or Paris)... :)

He is w fashionistas and not w the random guy w the loaf of bread under his armpit that hasn't taken a bath in a week (unless he is doing it satirically) promoting a fashionable accessory. :) just look at the style and quality of the other two non apple persons in the pic.

Btw the French dress much better than us. Almost anyone anywhere dresses better than the average US citizen and I think Ive has adapted too well to it.

The apple employees that were there didn't seem to know anything about the prices or the release dates. One of them told me she had the opportunity of trying a model, so it is at least semi-functional. She also said that so far 3 functions didn't need the iPhone next to the watch : the watch ( duh !), the iPod function, and that send-your-heartbeat-to-your-(girl)friend or whatever it's called. That one only needs any wifi around.

That doesn't make any sense. Why can heartbeats work without iPhone, but not the other things that could work with WiFi only?

One caveat though : Some fashion editor complained that it looked too masculine. I kinda agree. It did looked elegantly masculine, and even the smaller models with pink bracelets still looked somewhat masculine. I don't know how appealing it will look to women, but then again Im' not a woman, so what do I know?

Interesting. I recalls some in the industry complaining it was to feminine when it was first announced.

The Addams Family

The picture of the 5 of them bothered me off and on all day. They look like the freaky next door neighbors from a sitcom or the new Addams family.

Do you know them personally that it literally bothered you ALL day?

Agree, feels unusual. For me the watershed is going to be how they position themselves price-wise. If they keep it reasonable yet affordable, reflecting difference in costs for the various materials (e.g. the 18K gold in the Edition is estimated at $600), then okay, it's a personal item and why not offer a range of versions.

However if they really start imitating the fashion/luxury industry by charging stupid prices just because they can ($5000 upwards as Gruber predicts), this will be a departure from Apple as we know it.

I'd prefer them to find their own spot and making a dent into this industry by keeping it real.

If we assume that the cost of gold is 600, Apple typically has profit margin of 40% and if we assume at least 20% for all the manufacturer related costs, that's an additional markup of about 70% to the cost of gold which will be more than 1000 total.

So the cost of the gold watch could be as little as $1500.

I think anything less than $2000 would be terrific and it would be by far the cheapest solid gold case (I.e. Not plated) watch in the world

Almost agree with your final conclusion, but wait a second. Remember they're planning to sell the same watch for as low as $350? Yes we know gold as cost factor, manufacturing processes will be more expensive, other materials too. But total cost to Apple won't even reach $1000.

So it really could easily be priced at $1500. And this would be a real novelty and a frontal attack on the jewelry watchmakers. 'The worlds best gold watch at the world's best price...'

To me the only strategy that makes sense for Apple (in the traditional Jobsian sense). Apple didn't become what it is by imitating the products and business models of Creative, Nokia and HP. They always found a sweet spot where they would come out with a new approach in existing fields of business. I'd be very disappointed if they wouldn't stay true to that.

That is true if we assume 600 in gold.
We will see!!

I'm kind of dig this combination but wonder how much for the band, and if will we able to keep the band for the next version of watch? (I guess we should be)

Yet they are on top of the game in multi-million (probably billion?) dollar industries. And you are here, behind your anonymous screen name being an overly sour, I might add, "expert in fashion critic". Good job, you. You should own Vogue instead of that bug Wintour.
