Why can't the watch download songs / playlists when I use Apple Music? I don't want to manually plug into itunes when the watch has wifi or buy songs again!

I am not much of a fitness person, but do go for runs every once in a while with my dog. I always take my phone so I can listen to music while jogging.
With the WS2, would the GPS on the watch never need to be used (since GPS is coming from the phone) and therefore not drain the watch battery.
Alternatively, is there a way to listen to music without taking my phone? It might be worth the battery hit if I don't have to lug my phone strapped to my arm.
Thanks,
RJ

Why would u wanna leave your phone at home ? Isn't it supposed to be a "personal device" ? I guess, not that personal.

Its good GPS is in the watch as a convenience, but i would still have my iphone on me, just not use it

Good for location on Apple watch 2, but to see activity u gotta wait till u get home..

I've ordered one, going from a Sport to SS. I'm mostly doing it because of the increased water resistance. I go to the beach like crazy in summer, so it'll be nice not worrying about damaging it. I am still nervous about taking it in salt water though haha

I also had a Sport Watch and upgraded to the Stainless. It is completely worth the upgrade with the premium feel of the stainless and saphirre screen for the added protection.

As far as the Ocean goes for salt, I would make sure to rinse the Watch off with fresh water when out of the Ocean.

Enjoy the Watch. I will also be picking up another Stainless Series 2.

Even with the series 2 you'd be well advised to wash the watch in fresh water after being in the ocean or chlorinated water. Just like with series 0, salt and chlorine can wear down the rubber seals and eventually make it less water resistant.

Oversmart watch is killing battery life. I have to wait till Watch series 5 so that apple can fix Watch OS battery leaks. So far happy with my fitbit blaze. I hate charging watch every hour.

Every hour? Have you ever used Apple watch? I charge it at night before sleep and still have over 40% battery on it.

So Apple's willing to make a WATCH thicker for the sake of battery life, but not a PHONE?

Talk about hypocrisy. Apple is going backward so fast, it's nauseating.

Salt water is not good for anything! I, and friends, have had (water resistant, sport-specific) Garmin GPS watches destroyed by sweat over the course of a few thousand miles of running.

I would suggest with the AWs2, or a Garmin, or any electronic device, to simply rinse off the device with tap water after contact with salt water. (Sea, sweat, etc.) It’s a good measure to help stave off otherwise inventible corrosion.

That's fine if you don't like the thickness of the Apple Watch, but how could you possibly tell its thicker from seeing a video? The articles, from what I read, stated it's not noticeable to the eye, unless your physically touching it. And isn't it only one MM thicker? And your able to notice this through a video online?

It's not very difficult at all. If you look at the side of a watch, it looks pretty noticeably thick, compared to some other watches. That is a noticeable difference. The watch is only 1MM thicker, but it's still perceivable, depending on the angle. It's not about the measurements per say, but it is 10% thicker, which happens to make it noticeable to someone like myself who picks up on things like that.

I'm not saying it looks much thicker, but at a certain angle, you can tell it's a bit chunkier, especially when it is on a thinner wrist, where every dimension pops out, if it does not sit more flush.

Many people who run, bike, etc. don't want to carry a phone with them.

wait a minute... apple made a THICKER watch, I guess they had no other choice...
As for me, its cool, but not something I would buy for now. Will wait until revision 5 or so lol

My point is simply that Apple seems to be changing the positioning of the Watch from fashion icon to fitness accessory, and I think that shows a lack of focus.
But they haven't done away with the fashion aspect. To the contrary, they've kept it and made it MORE focused--namely Hermes. Apple does make elegant and upscale devices, and there is a certain fashion in that. But there is a difference between a fashionable smartphone that you carry with you, and something that you actually wear like a wristband. Hermes does wearable fashion. And so Apple partnered with Hermes to make the fashion aspect of the watch MORE focused. EVIDENCE: there is a fashion blogger who was not in the least interested in an Apple watch. The judged them not fashionable. Then she saw the Hermes double-long band watch. She bought it in an instant as uber-fashionable and put up a video of herself happily wearing it for the first time.

So going with Hermes watches with Hermes designed bands have made Apple watches more fashionable. Meanwhile, Apple took note that of the enthusiasm for the fitness apps on the watch. Now I know we use the term "sports watch" to mean "fitness watch." But once again, you'll note that Apple partnered with Nike to give those big on sports a sports watch (with a very sweat resistant band and all). But the purely Apple (non-Nike) watch comes with the old assortment of bands. Thus, it can be a fitness watch with a fitness band, a business watch with a business style band, an elegant watch with an elegant band for going out, and a casual band for everyday.

In short, a watch for all seasons.

To conclude, for those who want the fashion icon, there's Hermes--which gives the watch a much stronger fashion focus. For those who want super sports, there's Nike, which gives it a strong sports focus. Both of these allow Apple to keep the regular (non-Hermes/non-Nike) watch focused on being a multi-purpose smartwatch, which is what most people want. That to me says that far from losing focus, Apple has gained a much stronger focus where the watch is concerned.

- Apple Pay, literally not having to carry a wallet anymore can not be understated
Oh, I wish it was that way in the U.S. More and more places are taking Apple Pay, but I still have to have my wallet on me because most still don't. I absolutely love being able to lift my wrist and pay for a purchase, no digging out the wallet, no bothering with paper receipts. Pay and go. And it's still enough of a novelty that many cashiers and other customers gawk in amazement. "Awesome!" Like I've done a magic trick :D I suspect that a lot of people know *about* the Apple Watch, but they're not aware of all it can do.

And I'm with you on a lot of the other items on the list. I use the timer on my watch all the time for baking. There's something about a tap on the wrist that really makes a difference--sound timers never worked so well for me. No more burnt cookies or scones.

To move music from phone to watch you need to use the iPhone's WATCH APP, not the Apple Music app. On your phone, you go to the Watch App->Music->Sync Music, and up come your playlists. Pick one! Music is downloaded onto the watch. Does that answer the question? Or am I misunderstanding what you're asking?

You can load up to 2GB of music on the watch.
What ErikGrim said. If the music is on your watch, you don't need to bring the phone. You can also use Apple Pay without the phone. And listening to music doesn't drain the battery that much. The watch has a pretty good battery. Remember to charge it at night and (if you're not using GPS) it should last you the day.

Reviewers think that the 50 percent faster processor, improved durability in water, and fitness-focused features have elevated the second generation of Apple Watch to become a more sensical purchase option...

As someone who uses the original AW for fitness and activity tracking, AW2 is exactly 0% better.

  • I carry my phone anyway when running, walking and hiking (mainly in case of emergency, whether myself, family, or work) so the built-in GPS isn't a big help.
  • I don't swim.
  • the processor wasnt a bottleneck for fitness and activity

It's WatchOS 3 and iOS 10 plus their updated apps that are the huge improvement.

I read some reviews that say the AWS2 will use the phone's GPS when it is available. (It also makes so much sense that it's hard to imagine it wouldn't.)

Also: yes, you can listen to music on the AW (any version), independent of the phone. You can choose one playlist to sync over to the watch. I guess it's obvious, but you need to use Bluetooth headphones

Its because of function (the GPS) that they made it thicker, not battery life.
Also, the difference is pretty small; sure that wouldn't satisfy you on the phone and you'd still whine.

Different strokes. But, you’re not a runner, are you? And I ask that with the utmost respect - not trying to be snarky.

I don't consider myself a runner. I'm a football and lacrosse referee - so I run, but I don't run long distances just to do it. I hike nature trails, but don't run marathons. I'm very active and fit, but I'm not one of those people I see running every morning at 6am for 5 miles. So I don't get that lifestyle.

Well, that's an interesting question. The watch now allows you to push the lower button and bring up a 911 call for help. There are devices that use GPS to send out such "Help!" signals. Can the AW2 911 do that using GPS? If it can, then problem solved...does any review or Apple site say if it can do this?

You can't call without the iPhone within 20 feet of you, that's my understanding.
