I still have the Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) as a back up. The watch is painfully slow in every aspect and I have the Series 5 currently. Apple should have put the Series 4 at that price range and 40/44mm model across the board.
i dont know what u do with ur apple watch to be slow. am using apple watch gps and lte and its still very fast.

i dont know whats wrong with u people. first u complain when apple doesnt support old devices anymore. and now u complain that apple supports the 3rd gen apple watch. because it requires a extra step. apple wouldnt sell the 3rd gen anymore if there where no demand by customers for it.

My Series 3 cellular SS still runs like a champ and is a beautiful as the day it came out of the box. As it is cellular there is no update issue. I will be updating to Series 7 this fall. Bought my wife a Series 3 GPS last month to hold her over until the fall. Her series 0 SS died, which she found perfectly satisfactory.
ok I see a lot of people appending "SS" to their watch version.... for the life of me I can't figure out what that means, can some one explain? thanks :)

Job’s famously said that “We don’t ship junk” when asked about a cheaper Mac Mini (back in 2007) He said cheaper stuff requires too many compromises and hurts the end user. Tim was sitting right next to him when he said that. I guess he wasn’t paying attention.

-Yeah, about that no compromise thing on the mac mini... If we go back two years to 2005, the first PPC version had a relatively slow HDD, and though it had a dedicated video card - marketed for 'games' on the mac... except... the ATI 9200 cards were bought in bulk, with lots of features disabled, so the card could be underclocked and keep the fanless chipset in a confined place.

So, when I get one, plug in my large (at the time) ViewSonic monitor with a DVI-D cable, there's awful clipping and flicker when running in its native 1600 x 1200 resolution. The only way to 'fix' it is to pull it down to a weaker 1280x1024 that the video card could handle.
Doing a little more research with ATI, they indicated they patched this on their standalone fully featured cards, which included with a firmware update that Apple decided not to purchase.

Kudos to Apple in the end. I complain to them, and got my iPod at the time replaced with a free iPod Photo, but spending $1200 CAD on the best mac mini config available but delivering ultimately a neutered machine never sat well with me.

I sold my S3 in part for this reason. Last major updated required me to wipe my AW and I wasn't going to ever do that again just for updates.

I suspect that Apple doesn’t advertise to potential 3Gen customers the potential rigamarole of an update process facing them.

I find the pair/unpair/restore/add/Apple Pay cards a soothing experience, especially when burning incense. When you exercise you do the same things over and over again. Same as meditation or hot yoga. These things improve the quality of your life.

See, it's a feature, Apple is improving your health and life qualimetrics by requiring this. They should include this feature in all newly released hardware, even Macs.

I'm still rocking the release day Series 3 Cellular Version, dont run any 3rd party apps on it other than Adidas Training, Spotify, and Authy, and it's held up to the test of time very well. I just now considered upgrading to the upcoming version after seeing the rumored re-design. I sympathize with how terrible of an experience it is to un-pair/restore just to upgrade to probably what is the last major WatchOS update for the Series 3.

Embarrassing… really? A big update on a small capacity device that isn’t mandatory 🤦‍♂️

Such a horrible user experience. It took hours for the last restore/upgrade to complete and having to set up apple pay again is a total shi*t show.

I'm wondering what use this watch will be when it gets left behind the current OS. Mine is actually still going strong and I suspect it could for quite some time. But without it being paired and syncing with a phone, will it offer much function still? 🤔

I own a Stainless Steel S3 (did not want to sell it) and just updated it. It works. Everything works. And it got the newest OS release. Look at other brands, what they do with 5 year old devices...

It is slower than the actual S6, but it works. All apps. No 2021 Pride watchface - so what. Ok the unpairing for the 8GB model is a pain - the SS does not need that. But even the Aluminum-Version still runs after re-pairing and is absolutely usable. I sometimes use it as a backup and it is ok.

No big deal, everything on the watch is easily backed up, it's not a two-way interface. The phone injects the watch.

You can't compare it to formatting a PC, that's just not knowing how this actually works.

There is no reason not to pair it again. It just needs to be wiped for updating, and then you restore it from the backup.

It was quick when new and compared to the original Apple Watch. Once I get used to the performance on the Series 5 model and bigger display, the Series 3 quickly becomes slow and not a good experience.

Although we don't know if it only limited to Series 3 (GPS) and WatchOS 7.5 update, pairing and un-pairing to get the watch updated is not a good user experience. If it is only a one-time 7.5 update and delta update from this point, it is more bearable.
