so aggravating. the Hermes has the most elegant faces, and the Nike the best digital face. Neither are on my SS watch that costs $650 (soon to be the $750 S4 version). What is Apple thinking? The new faces are cool and colorful but some us want to wear these in professional or elegant settings too!

Yeah agree. The stock faces aren’t appropriate for meetings at a certain level. When the room is full of Rolexes and Omegas, the stock faces draw plenty of grimaces.

So, is the heart monitor sensor different from the one in Series 3 or is it the same? If it's the same, I'm sitting out this update. If it's a new generation heart monitor sensor, I will buy the Series 4. Unfortunately, the heart monitor sensor in Series 2 and Series 3 is extremely flaky. We have two Series 2 and two Series 3 watches, and on all four watches, the heart monitor readings are all over the map, sometimes fluctuating over 100 beats per minute on two subsequent measurements that are 30 seconds apart. This mostly happens during exercising.

The 44mm Series 4 aluminum model with LTE is $529 before tax and excluding Apple Care.

I'm not sure if you watched the keynote or not, but it sounds like you should go watch the parts on the Apple Watch. The heart sensors in Series 4 are not only updated, they are revolutionary. I'm not just saying that as a fan boy; as an engineer, they are genuinely amazing. (Not to mention FDA approved)

The 40mm is essentially the same size as the old 42mm.

The screen display area is, the watch is still smaller. It is narrower and it isn't as tall. Bottom line is if you owned a 42 mm and switch to a 40 mm your watch will get physically smaller even if the display does not. You also will not be able to use any of your 42 mm bands on your new 40 mm watch.

A pretty true fact: it is FAR easier to get used to a slightly larger watch than it is to get used to a smaller watch. For many who felt they were "in between" the 38 and 42 and decided to go 42, remember that was the feeling when you were picking then and you've since gotten used to the 42... I'm not sure how many of you after months or years of wearing the 42 will be thrilled to go down to the 40 even if once you thought it would be ideal.

Is the 2mm increase (38 to 40, 42 to 44) just the increased 'viewable' screen size alone? Hence the actual case has not increased in size itself? Thats how it reads, but just wishing to seek confirmation....as many others believe (rightly or wrongly) that the overall case size has increased also.

Thanks

That’s exactly the question I have! If they have slimmed the bezels, 2 mm is achievable with no physical increase in size.
I’m looking at my stainless steel link bracelet and if they say it is compatible with the new watch it is impossible that the width has varied as it contours into the side of my watch.

I am wearing 42mm now. should I get 40mm or 44mm? I am thinking to get Hermes this year.. I really need your help..

According to the specs, the 44mm watch is 1.5mm taller, and 1.6mm wider. Conversely, the 40mm is going to be 2.5mm shorter, and 2.6mm narrower than your current watch. So the question for you is, do you want your new watch be a lot smaller, or slightly larger? Only way to really tell is to try it on.

44: 44Hx38W
40: 40Hx34W

42: 42.5Hx36.4W
38: 38.6Hx33.3W

Being able to record AFIB is huge. I’ve been wanting that since the S0. Never thought it would actually be possible in a watch. Even if it only captures a small fraction of the heart in fibrillation it’s still a big deal in the medical industry. Sadly ECG doesn’t work on launch day and has no launch date other than “later” so I’m on the fence about preordering or just wait for the S5. Being someone with AFIB it would be nice to have but also know that the improvements in the S5 for the ECG will be pretty substantial.

Apple really missed the mark by not offering a Blood Pressure monitoring solution this year!
Detecting AFIB is more important. They also make blood pressure devices for iOS already. Having a cuff type band would be pretty ridiculous and keeping it on tight enough for long periods of time like a day would cause more harm than solve.

What would have REALLY rocked my world would have been an announcement that ATSC 3.0 was in the watch! Portable TV everywhere. Ok, battery issues aside. Then ATSC 3.0 in the iPhone X's...

The area where the bands slide in is the same width. The 38mm bands contour with the 40mm S4 and the 42mm bands contour with the 44mm S4. Apple hasn’t changed the bands at all other than new colors. The only thing that will change as far as the bands go will be the “sizing” on the boxes they come in.

Those bezels look awful. I'll stick with my series 3 for awhile. Only thing I may have bought is a better version of AirPods. Looks like I can save my loot this year. YAY thanks for not tempting me Apple.

Agree, the bezels still look like they have fat to trim!

and don't even get me started on Macbook Pros' bezels!!!

I am truly excited about the Apple Watch series 4. The new heart rate sensors look awesome. I can’t decide between the Stainless or the Space Black.

I’m going from Space Black on my Series 2 to Stainless for the Series 4. I’m hoping this sticker shock wears off by pre-order time, $750 will be pretty steep but hoping to get as close to $300 as I can for my Series 2 to make it a little more palatable.

Buy once, cry once right?

Bigger screen is nice but that still looks like a real fat bezel to me. They may be "similar to the new iPhones" in terms of the actual width of the bezel, but as a percentage of screen size, they're much larger. It's a shame they couldn't bring it out closer to the edge and either make the screen even bigger, or make the case smaller.

I could also do with a slightly less bulbous curvature on the edges of the screen, make it a little flatter with a slightly sharper rounding, it kind of feels like I'm looking into one of those snow globes or something.

Not to mention those bulbous edges are a watch face scratch magnet...

Anyone know if that new watch face will be on the series 3 or not?
Looks like all of the complications are S4 exclusive for obvious reasons. You do get the vape, fire and water faces though.
What about Bluetooth 5 support?? Or will the software updates continue to take a half-year each time to download to the Watch?
Yes, Bluetooth 5.0 is included.

Just noticed that if you don’t want cellular, you can’t get stainless. So much for my upgrade. Crap!
That has not changed from series 3

  • 44mm how much will the battery last compared to the old 42mm now new 40mm AW. Will the 44mm offer longer battery life? If it does, what will it be? 30 minutes longer a hour? i would like to know this because that could have some added bonus over the new 40mm version. (Battery life is good on the AW, i know but having that extra juice is always nice meaning more playtime on the AW)
  • LTE on the 44mm, does it have a bigger enhanced attenna to retain it`s reception better then the old S3 42mm AW? (i plan to use this as my sole device for calling on the daily basis and leave the iphone at home (i am weird)
Battery life is the same as the series 3 today. With an increased outdoor workout to 6 hours.

The device does now have the capabilities to send and receive reception from the front and back of the device. That should result in better reception, but your mileage could vary.

The new watch is cool, but I was hoping they'd put 5Ghz wifi chips in them by now.
What on earth for? 5ghz is only useful in close proximity to an access point, and the point of Apple Watch is mobility. And any speed improvement would be not noticed due to saturation of the processor.

When you say “obvious reasons” I assume you mean the new display sizes. Except here’s the thing ... the watch face on the 44mm is scaled down to fit the 40mm, which new display area is about the same size as the old 42mm display area. So at a minimum the 42mm could have the same size display that the new 40mm has. The 38mm would probably have to scale down the display too much, but heck with such a sharp display, I’d like the option.

It’s probably more about the processor needed to keep 8 complications updating in real time.

Pebble Time anyone?

About the only thing i like here about Apple is they allow interchangeable watch bands from ALL previous models..

This is the only thing as you'll never see that with that same interchangeability with other of their products. I guess "the dongle" makes an appearance.

I have a series 1 SS Milanese loop watch and was hoping for an obvious upgrade option from the announcements... but I’m not sure it exists.

Here’s the issue. I have lots of SS bands, with matching strap lugs, so I’d really want another SS body on a new watch.

That means I have to have a cellular model, but my phone network (three,
UK), don’t support cellular Apple Watch. So to get an SS series 4, I have to buy a cellular device that I can’t use (nor particularly want/need), or switch mobile network provider (which I certainly don’t want to do).
