Reading contradictory or inconclusive things about whether the new optical (non-ECG) hearth rate sensor is better for hearth rate tracking during workouts than in previous Apple Watches... Would love to see tests with a clear methodology, testing the accuracy and, also important, the frequency, of the measurements.

If there are no tests to back it up, then probably your suspicions are correct. It's not better, but apple has the patent on the newer - just as reliable - tech.

Maybe?

Bad title. The no-brainer comment was for people with say a series 0 or series 1. Some agreed that a series 3 owner would really have to be into the new features.

Edit: They updated the title. :)

I do have a Series 0 watch. Had it since launch day. Having notifications on the wrist is nice and the fitness tracking is ok but none of that is worth the price tag. Especially for a device with a battery that still barely lasts more than a day.

I think i may wait until there's a sale on them in a year or so. i'm contempt with my original SS 42mm. love the SS and size but speed and more battery life will be welcomed.

I have a series 1 and have been wanting a slightly bigger display, etc. I didn't realize series 2/3 were faster, so I guess I should see a decent improvement once I get my watch.

I'm sorry but calling a $400 largely unnecessary device that'll be obsolete in 2 years a "no brainer purchase" is one of the most absurd statements I've ever heard. I'll be keeping my series 1 until it stops working because even at a discount it wasn't good value for money.

obsolete in 2 years? Do you know the definition of obsolete? Your series 1 is 2 years now, is it obsolete? LOL.. anyways if you don't really care about the series 4, then why are you here checking out series 4 news?

It isn’t a no brainer for someone who shelled out money for the Series 3 Ceramic Gray Edition. I wasn’t planning on upgrading one way or the other. However, I am disappointed they did not continue their Edition lineup.

Aluminum and Stainless steel scratches eventually. Ceramic doesn’t scratch. It is very good for people who do not like scratches. For example, I wear a suit to work every day. Having a clean watch is nice to have.

Obviously you can buff out scratches on the regular stainless steel but it is a hassle. The other stainless steel finishes would come off with polish. Does not leave much of an option for me to upgrade.

I have a stainless steel series 0 that I bought from day one. It does everything I want it to do and it’s beautiful. I’ll stick with it until it dies.

Here we go again. Biased reviews by publications scared to be blacklisted by Apple if they say a negative comment. Let the real world reviews in a few days from actual customers speak instead of these paid venues...

Update: I’m totally biased lol. Verge I guess did write an initial horrible article about the AW3.
Sounds a bit like hate to me..

I was about to order AW4, but found out, that ECG (EKG) works only in USA. No other country have this option in description...

I mean - they did't say a single word about this, so it looks very unprofessional from Apple, to talk about new feature for 12 minutes that is limited to USA and not mention will it come to other countries... So I will not buy it. Even if they said this feature come to Europe in 2018, after AirPower fail I wouldn't believe them...

I had a series 0 that was replaced by Apple for free so a Series 1 due to the battery swelling issues. Not sure if I’ll upgrade or not as they really didn’t seem to address by biggest issues which are battery life and Siri being unreliable. They battery on mine runs out on me after about 14hrs on days where I do multiple workouts (couple of 30m outdoor walks with a 45m high intensity workout) let alone for at least 3 days which is what I really want. Siri just drives me nuts either not activating or just hearing me wrong.

Anyway, not a launch day upgrade for me. I’ll wait until I see the improvements in watchOS 5 with my current one and for the first round of sales at BestBuy/Target or the Nike store if I do decide.

upgrade, I have the series 2 and I get 2 days of battery life. I use it for 1 1/2 workout in the morning, notifications throughout the day, see the time, texts.. unless you are on it every single hour messing around with apps, then you should get a full 2 days, I do at least, and that is series 2.. I imagine series 4 is better.

This wasn't a secret.

I'm with you. My series 0 is getting slow, but it still works for notifications and fitness tracking, and I'm not ready to drop another $400+ after a few years of use. If there are sales to get the 44mm GPS $75-$100 cheaper, I'll upgrade at that time.

Battery life continues to be the only thing stopping me from purchasing. If some form of integrated solar and/or kinetic charging solution get's included to increase the time between charges then I'll be in. Though I suspect the engineering and practicality challenges to bring this about are extreme. I live in hope.
Not enough surface area or kinetic motion available to make a dent in the battery consumption.

They need to reduce power consumption. I suspect the issue is this - as an electrical engineer and microprocessor designer, I bet they can make different engineering trade offs and get, maybe double the battery life. In practical use, though, you just charge each night, so charging every other night is not good enough to be worth the trade offs. What they need is to achieve one week battery life, but given current technology that would mean giving up too many features and too much performance.

Not run like a potato? Series 0 is so slow now.

To be fair, my Series 0 runs fine. Never had any bother with slowness. The battery is getting on a bit but the new watches still don't have very good battery life so it's hardly worth paying £400 for a new watch with only slightly better battery life.

$400/730 days = $0.54/day
The device will not be obsolete in two years. Apple Watch was introduced in 2015, 3 years ago and it still retains the very same functionalities for which people bought it, which would bring it to $0.36/day.
I also expect the AW to last longer and longer as the iPhone.
It’s up to you to decide based on its functionalities, which will be available for years, if it’s worth $0.54/day or less.

Yeah, the gap is that while the FDA approved it for use in the US, each country likely has their own version of the FDA that may gate or require additional approval for the feature to be enabled. The hardware will be there, but the software will be contingent on approval.
