While it may be true that there aren't a lot of things upgraded, always on display is a HUGE one that is usually at the top of every single person's list of Apple Watch upgrades since 2015. It was a surprise feature and we will gladly take it. Doesn't mean I'm going to upgrade my Series 4 this year, but I'm stoked and looking forward to my next upgrade even more.
I have got to wonder if the display can be turned off...I sleep with mine on because I enjoy the vibration awake. I also do not like to see it on me or my passengers wrist when driving the car at night.

I'm pretty sure the theater mode will turn the display off just like it does on the S4 but we'll have to wait and see. I think you're having a misunderstanding about the AOD though. It's not going to be anything like the current display when on (In the AOD mode). When on as in you turn your wrist it will be like the normal S4

As a guy that puts nail polish on all TiVo lights, Airport Express lights, and clothes pins on my curtains...any light at night is too much...especially my folded are 2” from my eyes. That said, theatre mode has been turned on the entire time since IOS 10.3 came out in 01/17.

Isn't there a worry about burn-in with an always on OLED display and an image that has many static elements?

I love these blackout stickers for that. In the demos I've seen of the watch the person puts their hand over the face to get the "dim" always-on face. I wonder if theater mode is the only way to turn it off with the watch still on.

I have a series 3 aluminium model which works great though the ion-x screen scratches and scuffs way too easily IMO. Going to see how Watch OS6 pans out on the series 3 before deciding if I should upgrade. It's too bad the base aluminum models don't have a sapphire screen. All models should have a durable screen.

ordered the 44mm aluminum bc thatʻs the only one i could get on the 20th b/c i ordered so late. i might just have it for a couple weeks and upgrade to titanium once i see how the titanium looks.

While I would love a sapphire screen but I don't think it would be worth the extra money for me. One of the things I like about the AW is it starts at $399 for the latest model. The option to upgrade the screen would be a nice feature but I'm glad it's not mandatory. It's the same with people complaining about iPhones starting at 64 GB. Why should someone who doesn't use more than 64 GB be required to buy 128 GB. I'm absolutely rough as hell on my watch due to my working conditions. I also swim with it so even after all the abuse it's still water resistant. It has numerous scratches on the face and body but that doesn't effect how it works and they're only visible if you're holding it up at a certain angle. I wonder how the visibility of the AOD would be effected by scratches but there is only one way to find out.

Works for me as I'm coming off an AW3 (actually an AW2 that Apple generously replaced with an AW3 after the screen fell out). I figure this is the "S" model of the AW4. Only thing that sucks is next year no doubt the AW will be revamped so it will be hard not to upgrade, and the AW's have a pretty terrible resale value.

People are definitely underestimating how significant this always-on display is for many users. My belief is Apple has been working on finding a way to do this since the inception of Apple Watch. And now they've finally done it.
.
Is this a joke, keep screen on is one line of code? Are you really trying to suggest they have had a team of programmers locked away for years working on this.. wow.. just... wow!!!!!!!

If the screen is still OLED then how always on display will affect it, considering the burn in issue of OLED displays?
Dont forget Burn in only occured on samsung screens when apple only had LCD, once apple had amoled, supplied by Samsung , it wasn't an issue.. lol

You realize it's not the same OLED screen in the AW S4 right? It's not just a software update telling the screen to dim or not turn off. I think burn in might have been a problem with earlier OLED panels but technology improves. I don't have burn in on my XS Max but it's only a year old

This drives me mad. I have 64 gig and I don’t even use half of it. I don’t know anyone that owns a phone with more than the base storage.

I have the 256 GB model but I only use about 70 GB. I have so many games I don't play often so if I really wanted to I could use the 64 GB. I remember when it was 16 GB LOL

If history holds true give it a few months the forum will be filled with complaints as there’ll always be someone :)

I have so many games taking up so much space and I only play a few of them regularly.

Not really an apt analogy there. Storage capacity issue is elastic as not everyone requires large amounts of physical storage in the cloud era. I'm not arguing for an upgrade option on the base watch I'm arguing that the sapphire should be standard. The screen is the most important aspect of the watch as it is the only gateway to all its functions and thus I feel all models should possess the most durable screen available. If Apple is content to have the internal hardware match amongst models in the range it can surely do so with the screen. I would wager that the screen differences only exist as way for Apple to upsell not because the material cost justifies the price differential.

It's still an upgrade that would increase the price. I could argue that all AW should be stainless or titanium. Regardless of how you feel about it, the retail price will go up if the manufacture costs more for materials.

If there is a price differential in the cost of glass; on scale of manufacturing Apple engages in it would be negligible. To use your example of iPhone storage, Apple charges an average of $50 for every extra 64GB NAND storage, while raw NAND costs $0.1 per GB for Apple, i.e. its an upsell profit driver. It's the same with sapphire. There are much cheaper time pieces available that come with sapphire glass. It's not a luxury material.

Apple will generate $18bn+ in revenue and 26 per cent of its total operating profit dollar from upselling 17+billion GB of NAND flash just on its laptops.

Apple's pricing strategy is primarily about marketing not about materials.
