Do we really think they couldn't have brought the AOD to the S4 last year?

This feels purposely held back just to have "something" for this year.
yap. apple dont even try to hide that fact

No.

People are forgetting technically people said AOD display with such a tiny battery would be impossible just a couple of years ago. Now Apple has found a way to do it. This is huge leap forward in technology.

but many other smartwatch has it already.

Don’t laugh, I’m still sporting my Series 0  Watch. It barely works for anything other than telling time.

I was all set to upgrade last year, until I ended up buying a new home, and decided the watch money could be better spent on something like a washer & dryer.

AW5 is a no-brainer for me this year. Visually it is stunning. On the outside, it doesn’t even look like the same watch from 5 years ago, not to mention what’s on the inside.

And that ceramic. WOW. I was hoping pricing would fall around where the titanium did. So it’s stainless again for me. I do wish Apple would do another stainless band. The (retired) link was too bulky for my wrist, and the Milanese Loop, is too feminine looking (IMO).

so what you are saying is. by not buying apple product for 5 years, you can get a house and washer and dryer.....sounds about right lol

I think this is a huge upgrade with the AOD and incredible battery advancements. It's a no brainer upgrade for pretty much everyone, no matter what Apple Watch Series you currently own. For those who haven't invested in Apple Watch yet, now is the perfect time.

It’s a no brains upgrade if you ask me. How someone can justify spending $100’s to have a dimly-lit display on show all of the time even when you’re not looking at it...what’s the point of that? The only time you need the display on is if your staring at it, or somethings happening and it draws your attention. This is a feature for the weak minded and gullible

I got the S0 in Stainless Steel. At the time some of us thought maybe Apple would somehow let you replace the internals of the Watch instead of having to buy a whole new one. That clearly didn’t happen....

I’ve ordered the S5 in Space Gray aluminum.

I was in that camp of believing Apple would allow processor upgrades in their watches. It was unthinkable to sell a $13,000 gold watch that would be obsolete in three years, yet here we are.

I agree with you on the Aluminum watches. They are durable enough and do the exact same thing as the $2000 Apple watches.

No - I don't think so, and I did not even hear any rumours about the "LTPO" display that does this magic. Perhaps I missed the rumours, but the "always on" was a big surprise for me, and a very good one! Ordered a Titanium series 5 today.

Bah - you guys must be rich saving your $100. Or I am weak minded and gullible I guess :)

But actually - I do lane swimming, and it will be nice to be able to have a glance without making an intentional arm movement - same for a lot of things. Watch that Apple video from the Keynote - they showed people doing workouts and stuff. Hey how about road biking - that's another one where it will be a very nice feature. Or just when I want to see what time it is haha.

There's no "seldom usage" with my watch. With the exception of a few days (Less than 10) that I forgot it, it's every day with 15 plus hour days. Of course I'm not purposely trying to keep the display on for hours at a time with the same content trying to get a burn in either. As to tricks on the S5 they said the brightness is reduced for the always on part but maybe there is software tricks that move the always on display items. I'm sure Apple isn't going to release it where a large number of users experience burn in. If this happened they would end up replacing screens and that would be very costly to them. There's an expectation of Apple to stand behind their products long after the warranty has expired. I sure wish this was true for other brands.
In comparison to ‘always on’ it’s a seldom usage, that’s what I mean. People don’t stare at their watches for long periods of time, so most of the time it’s off.

I doubt Apple would replace anything, since somewhere deep in the user agreement it’s surely said that this is a known “feature” or known issue which is not covered behind a standard warranty. In my opinion such technology shouldn’t be used at all in the first place in consumer (and expensive) products, because sooner or later a screen will suffer from that. While other screens can serve for years and dozens of years. But it’s not a subject here.

I found what actually happens with the truly always on screen. iPhone X at a store after a year.

Curious what will happen to Series 5 after a year or two...

Ha ha. I didn’t say I didn’t buy any new Apple products in 5 years, just not a new watch. But yeah, something like that.

And with price matching and a coupon at Lowe’s, the full size Whirlpool Washer and Dryer set cost less than a new iPhone 11 Pro Max.
[doublepost=1568175125][/doublepost]I was hoping for some animated Snoopy watch faces (like the Mickey), now that Apple is collaborating with Peanuts for Apple TV+

Snoopy and I were very disappointed today

Next years S6 is rumoured to have always on sound so even when your not listening to it, it’ll be still quietly making a sound. It won’t effect battery life either apparently because it will be so whisper quiet. You heard it (or did you?) first here folks.

Everyone is focusing on AOD, but to me the most important feature is the International emergency calling.

But I can’t really find more info on how that works exactly...

For example, if I’m travelling, I usually buy a new SIM. What if don’t have a phone plan that includes the Apple Watch (because 7-day or Prepaid phone plans often don’t), will Apple Watch still be able to call emergency services?

Or is this only for Apple Watches with the phone plans that include Apple Watch cellular?

I know in the USA cellular phones without an active service plan are still capable of emergency dialing. Perhaps this is similar? The SIM doesn't make the phone receive the signal but rather just like a password telling the carrier you're authorized to make phone calls and get data.

The watch was really the only cool thing for me this year. First year in a long time that I probably won't upgrade the iPhone. (and I'm on the upgrade plan) But the watch now being always on is a winner fro me. I will finally have a good reason to upgrade my original space grey aluminum series 0. Yay. Probably gonna go with the Nike GPS 44mm Space Grey Aluminum, black/grey band.

An always-on display that also works when I can't see it is pretty much at the bottom of my priority list.

I'm disappointed, they didn't even mention improved hardware capabilities - faster, more memory etc.

Looks like I'll stay on the S3 for now - hoping for sleep tracking and more health monitors.

Well you may be true, but from time to time I always wish that I could see the time on my Apple Watch without the obvious movement. Apple said it clearly at the keynote. Say you're in a meeting when you just want to peek at the time without anybody noticing, or staring at you for being impolite?

With Series 5 this is possible. I mean sure AOD may be overkill, but this is the only way that you can peek at the time until Apple invents eye movement tracker to determine whether you want to see the time or not.

However, I still own an AWS 4 and as enticing as a AWS5 may, it may not worth the extra money for me. Too small of an upgrade.

Keeping my S4. I don't want a AOD, I'd look like a Christmas tree when in bars or walking in the dark.

Gosh, you’re right I never thought of that scenario. Thank goodness Apple solved it for us. The brilliant thing is now, rather than dragging your eyeballs discretely to your wrist without anybody noticing (oh the thought!) you’ll be able let them wander free is a bird and look at everyone else’s AW5 in the room. It’s genius and such good value.

I believe it dims right down then when you tap or riase to wake it returns to normal brightness.

I'm going to be finally upgrading from my 4 year old S0. It's served my well but it's pretty scratched and very slow these days.

I guess that nobody @ Apple wanted to type in the 150 supported countries for international emergency calls, because I can’t find them. Oh yes. Apple did add a link to some page, but there’s no info. Maybe later.

Edit: you can pre-order an Apple Watch series 5, but the tech specs are nowhere to be found!

My mechanical watch has this! It's a sort of always-on very subtle ticking sound. Can't wait for this feature in the Apple Watch!

I went from S2 to S4 and it's brilliant, the speed difference is great. Going from an S0 is a no brainer, you'll love it!

Yeah the high end Apple watches never made sense to me unless you have that much disposable income. It is hard for me personally to justify the SS watch, though $600-$700 is a much easier pill to swallow and I have kept my Series 2 for 3 years so that’s a couple hundred per year. The SS watches also do look really high quality too. I will get the Aluminum 44mm this year and probably keep it for another 3 years. At $430 less $50 trade in for my Series 2, $380 over 3 years is a no-brainer.

So what Apple didn't mention and majority people here are missing, the S5 has a new CPU and twice the storage, now with 32GB's.
