I’ve always had stainless steel AW since day one. I’ve upgraded to every new iteration and held on to my series 4. but decided it was time to upgrade to series 7. But this time I went with the midnight aluminum. I’m not concerned with aesthetics, but I am concerned with durability. I’m not too rough with it but it does get banged around occasionally at work and I am very OCD with even minor dents or scratches. I can polish my SS whenever I see some light scratches and it comes up brand new. Will the aluminum take a noticeably easier beating if it gets lightly bumped and banged?
The aluminum is softer than the SS model you are used to. As such, it is more likely to suffer a ding, chip, or dent if hit hard against an opposing surface.

This year will be the first for me with aluminum since I had account credit to cover getting a new watch. I usually go SS. SS is very nice but, the extra cost adds up especially if one upgrades every year. I got AC+ with the watch since it is much more likely to suffer damage than my phone. If something does happen, hopefully, I can use AC+.

Every leaker got the rumors wrong this year for Apple Watch. More to come…

I think Apple's best move for Apple Watch S8 next year should be:
Consolidate more functions on the core SOC,
Make the SOC more efficient, from connections within sub-components within the SOC to more importantly less transistors etc outside of the SOC.
Make the battery capacity larger and the SOC much more of a miser when using energy at any level. This last part if done right can lead to leaps and bounds for future iOS/iPadOS/ATV(not likely) and MBPs and iMacs in the future.

I'd rather these vs any redesign especially a BOX design on a wrist would just be cumbersome and very uncomfortable as a fitness/heallty focused device

To believe that you must also believe that it was Apple’s deliberate plan to make no improvements to health sensors or the chipset for the first time in the history of the Watch. Quite a coincidence that this startling lack of ambition came alongside multiple sources leaking information about an alternate design with significant production issues.
There was one occasion, where apple didn’t improve the chip in a new watch series. I think it was from 3 to 4? I am not sure. Anyway, it wouldn’t be the first time where apple made only minimal improvements in a new iteration in one of their products.

I am sooo glad that - with the current dramatic re-design - we are not having to face another thickness transformation

Care to sell me on why you wanted the upgrade materials?

About two months before my Apple Care ended I scratched my series 4. They replaced the whole thing and it gave me a revitalized battery. The agent misquoted me a $29 fee and Apple honored it. That made it really hard to upgrade to the series 6. I ended up ordering a blue aluminum this morning... but now that I have had some coffee I am considering canceling that order and just waiting for a stainless steel or titanium model.
It was as simple as this. I always had the aluminum because it didn’t make sense to spend that kind of money on something I was eventually going to have to upgrade. I don’t wear any jewelry except a watch so I thought that I would get the Stainless and treat myself.

Of course S7 is not worth an upgrade from S6. Most people keep their watches 2-3 years and then upgrade when they will get a bigger bang as you will probably see in coming from the S4. I’m also on an S4 and finally thinking about upgrading this year.
The biggest difference I notice is that updating the software takes much less time.

It’s Series 6.1

Despite Apple’s attempts to convince you how they revolutionised design processes, all they actually did is add a bit more curve to the case and display glass to fit in a slightly bigger screen
MMmmmmm, more like 5.2. Or maybe 4.3. Orrrr 3.4? 2.5? How about 1.6… NO, it’s like Series 0.7. Perfect!

Although, I don’t like leading zeros so I’ll just say it’s like Series 7.

Wait…
