I agree with this. It seems like the people that should be least spending their money on an item like an Apple Watch seem to be the people wearing them most from what I've seen. I'm also in LA. Like 1 of my friends wears an Apple Watch. He likes it. But he's the minority in my friend circle. Sometimes I see young professionals wearing them, but most of the time if I see young professionals they seem to be wearing real 'dumb' watches if any watch at all - most of the time it's no watch. This seems to be especially true at the bars, especially in like downtown LA and Santa Monica.

I wear a 'dumb' watch.

Define 'dumb' watch. I bet those professionals who are well able to afford a Rolex, etc. would continue to wear their expensive dumbwatches. Sure, they can opt for the Edition but it's considered a poor buy because a $10,000-17,000 Edition can only last so long whereas a $10,000 Rolex can last a lifetime.

However, in L.A. where I live I've run into professionals who wear the SS AW, including my primary care doctor and a school principal. They've switched because they seem to benefit from the added functionality from wearing the AW, rather than merely wearing a watch as a fashion statement, which most people continue to do.

I do not spend any time looking at what watches people are wearing. Just from casual associations during the work week, I see very few if any.

Yea, this whole premise of this thread seems like its for insecure apple watch owners trying to reassure themselves they werent the only dorks that bought this thing. Confirmation bias at its best.

Well if you're really the sort who looks for others to validate your purchases or your style, then it depends on who it is you see wearing one, doesn't it?

I may notice someone's Apple Watch, but I don't usually comment unless there is an opportunity for some casual conversation. I'm always curious to know what apps someone is using, or I may ask them about the band they are wearing if it looks nice. I've had a few strangers or casual acquaintances ask me about my Apple Watch. Same way people share interests and talk shop about anything. I've been a photographer for many years and I often get approached by other photographers who are interested in what gear I'm shooting with. (Sadly most are just interested in the gear more than discussing actual subjects or shooting techniques... but it's easier to have a casual conversation about gear.)

Watches are very personal items. I don't need to see an Apple Watch on someone else's wrist to feel validated. I already realize a smartwatch isn't for everyone. Owning one doesn't make me special, but it might make me more interesting to other Apple Watch owners and that's okay. I love talking about the Apple Watch! Many good conversations start with something two people have in common, even if it's something trivial. I also like see other Apple Watches in public because I want the product to be a success so I can keep using one for as long as I want to.

That rings true. It strikes me as a gadget very oriented to women, at the expense of appealing to most men.

Interesting. I have seen more Apple Watches on men, but where I live (Bellingham, WA) the sample size is too small to be statistically significant. I used to live in Washington, DC (for about ten years) and I do recall how popular expensive watches were there... especially for men.

Where I live now men are much more likely to wear an inexpensive sports watch that is more for function than for style. The locals here will think nothing of dropping thousands of dollars on a mountain bike, but might consider spending thousands on a watch as a waste of good beer money :D If anything most folks around here probably think my Apple Watch isn't rugged enough, but they might admit that at least it is functional.

Dumb Watch = traditional watch. No computer capabilities. It tells time. It might tell the date too. It might also work as a chronograph. It doesn't have a screen or wifi or any of that crap. It spans tiers from Timex to Fossil to Burberry/Fendi to Rolex/Patek.

And yeah I am sure some people benefit from the functionality. But there is no way that everyone who wears one needs the functionality =P

For the last three months I've traveled to the following US cities:
Chicago
Boston
Atlanta
Seattle
San Diego

I stopped counting all the Apple Watches I saw in the cities or on the airlines.
Amazing number of people with Apple Watches. All styles with nylon straps, classic buckle, leather loop.

I was so surprised I had to post this.
It's the complete opposite for me. Here in the Seattle area it's very rare for me to see an Apple watch. Even iphones are not that popular here it seems. Samsung seems to be king.

I just came back from a USA road trip and saw a lot of apple watches in the wild. I didn't count them but I saw a couple every day. But they also advertise it a lot over there.
A couple a day is nothing then. iphone has 50% marketshare here so you should be seeing a lot more than just a couple of day.

I agree. If you see 3 or 4 a day then to me it means that it's done poorly. iPhone has 50% marketshare here. You should be seeing a lot more than a couple a day if the watch sold well.

Seeing 3 or 4 AWs a day is actually pretty good, considering that it's a first generation product. The iPhone has been out for nearly 10 years so of course there's no way it can reach iPhone's numbers in one short year. You sound like one of the pundits who unrealistically conclude the AW must be selling poorly if it doesn't sell in iPhone's numbers.

Seeing 3 or 4 a day in a major metropolitan area is not good even for a first generation product. I can't agree with that.

It's physically impossible to comb through all of a major metropolitan area within a day, at least on foot. Seeing 3 or 4 a day within a localized area (which makes up a tiny percentage of the total area) is actually pretty good, and that's assuming you actually pay attention. It's not realistic to achieve that much penetrance within a year.

Who cares if someone creates a thread about seeing watches. Why does it matter enough to post that anyone who buys an Apple Watch must be a dork? Are you the judge of what constitutes a person being a dork? It's a community for people from ages as young as 10 maybe to 80+ who may want to talk about a watch. You put yourself up on a pedestal as if you are better than others because you don't agree with what they write about or purchase.

i read his message to say he lives in a very big city and happens to see 3-4 every day. I walked the skyway yesterday not even looking to see watches and I saw 3 in about 15 minutes. But apparently, we are dorks for buying an Apple Watch and worse yet if we happen to look for one. Lol

Well just as you have every right to consider me a judgemental a-...., I have every right to offer my opinion that the Apple watch is dorky. Thing is, my opinion isnt exactly original either. Theres a ton of people who think the apple watch is lame, so not sure why your feathers got so ruffled when I said it.

But I have an idea, I think I'll start a thread for people to list conversations with people they've had who agree the apple watch is stupid! But wait, that thread would probably so popular it would take macrumors down due to bandwidth overload, lol.

Well that depends on what your definition of a couple is. I'd say I saw about 10 on average in the big cities a day, at the Universal Studios theme park I saw a lot more than that.

And those are just the Watches I noticed. You can barely say anything about how good the Watch is doing by that. It may be a flop, it may be a success. All I know is that it's a much more popular device in the States than it is in Europe.

I'm surprised almost daily here at the hatred for the Apple Watch. You like it or your don't, but the constant hate and calling people names if they buy one. Lol so childish. Some people get off by liking any post that mocks the Apple Watch or anyone who buys one - or spews hate towards apple or even more so, Tim Cook.

I don't like androids but I don't waste my time going into android forums to voice my dislike. Simple as that.

Same here, but sometimes I think we might be in the minority. The photography forums I participate in are full of people who do this sort of thing. If you get your kicks posting negative comments in forums about gear you don't even own, I get why you might hate the Apple Watch. It would just be a constant reminder on your wrist of how much time you have wasted!

And it's mostly their insecurity at play. Android owners who come into the iPhone forum to bash the iPhone do the same thing, but it's actually their guilty conscience hard at work (because they know deep down that the iPhone is better).

We are in the minority because we know it's better and don't need to prove anything (just like alpha dogs tend not to pick fights because they already know they're alpha).

Why do you bother to reply on an Apple Watch post?

actually the premise of this thread wasn't to "reassure that I'm a dork" dude I know that. I get you're trolling-sure showed me and you're probably late for your high school chemistry class that you're most likely failing. Enjoy summer school.

How is you voicing your like for something any less of a waste of time than me voicing my dislike for something?

Most people would agree that actively participating in a forum related to a product that you're actually interested in is a better use of your time than going into a dedicated forum solely to bash a product that you don't like. Those include Android owners who hang out in the iPhone forum just to bad-mouth the iPhone.

You've called AW owners insecure, when in reality you're the insecure one for feeling the need to come in this dedicated AW sub-forum just to bash the AW.

You said it exactly right. There are many who post over and over again how much they hate the AW. Calling AW buyers dorks or idiots. They follow the threads and posts and Like posts that hate Apple or the AW. Not just once or twice, but for over a year.

That is the definition of insecure or under the age of 12 or in serious need of a life that they focus on negative and ripping people.

Good stuff.

So let me break it down for you from my point of view:
I'll contend my dislike for the Apple watch doesn't come from insecurity, but because I feel it epitomizes the wrong directions Apple has taken over the past few years. The Apple I used to know and love is now more about fashion and looks than actual functionality. And that makes me mad. It's been making me mad for a couple years now. You guys seem to adore that new Apple, so that makes me mad at you.

Why bother posting? Again, it's a question you really could ask of anyone on here. We're at work, we have a few minutes of down time, check in on macrumors and see something we feel like commenting about. That's pretty much what any of us do. We're all kind of wasting our time reading these threads and posting our two cents, but we enjoy it, so that's all that matters. I enjoy this site, and yes, I suppose I do kind of get a kick of out razzing you Apple watch owners a bit. So, thank you for the amusement ;)
