Notice how Apple never mentioned a price for the Watch Edition version. Being 18K gold, I think it will be more than just a $100 upgrade.

The best part for shareholders is that many people will still gladly pay that price difference, even if it pushes the watch into $600+ territory.

While I am not a huge fan of the design, it is far from ugly. I hate Marc Newson's influence, but this will attract a certain audience. The key to marketing this is to get celebs to make this a highly sought-after and exclusive device.

I thought presentation was nice but I'm not wooed by it. So much going on and battery life won't be desirable. Definitely gen 1 apple product. I'm fine with my simple g-shock watch but now for 6 plus…YES

Big Dissapointment

Wow, I'm gonna need to get truly boozed up when I go to the apple store for my watch.

It's only when I'm drunk that I spend money on things that are so overweight, ugly and irritating

It seems that the design of the Apple Watch is very polarizing.

Personally, I'm quite impressed. The watch is more functional and elegant than I imagined, and I think it looks simply gorgeous. I am also very impressed with the degree of personalization and the vast number of models and straps available. The watch would probably look better if it were a little thinner, but given the technical constraints the designers were under, I think it's about as good as can be right now. I don't think there's even a comparison to be made with an Android Wear product right now. None of those seem terribly compelling, even if you were an Android fan.

It feels to me like too many people are quick to make snap judgments about it being ugly without considering all of the functionality it has to offer and the form necessary for it to achieve that.

It's a little on the expensive side; I think it is as much jewelry it as it is a tech gadget. I would like one, but experience has taught me that buying into a first generation Apple product in a new category is unwise. I will probably wait for the second generation model, or maybe find one second hand. I suspect this version will have some major shortcomings that will be rectified in the second or third generation model.

For one thing, that's the sports watch variant. There are alternatives with different looks and styles. None look like the greatest thing in the world, but a watch is still a watch, and it fits the design spectrum with a little flair on it.

Also, I wouldn't have discounted the idea that Steve's touches were on these designs, these watches have been in development for a long time and probably prototyped many, many years ago.

Right now, this is for pure Apple marks and fitness people. It's not meant for the mainstream, yet.

And finally, this is the first version. It won't be essential until about 3-4 years when it really comes into its own with a curved glass panel and longer battery.

95% of how it looks will depend on the band.

Kind of like how the iPhone face is all about showing off the app you're using.

I'm kind of surprised too but this is probably the smartest move. Unlike with iPhones everyone's Apple Watch will look different.

Plus...it will be quite easy for 3rd parties to offer zillion of bands, much like there are zillions of cases.

This iWatch is just as ugly as the square Android watches. WTF Apple?

It's high fashion. Which means that for every 4 people that thinks it's ugly, there's someone who thinks it's gorgeous enough to more than quadruple the profit. So you think it's ugly... Ka-ching goes Steve's estate holdings.

Ugly as hell! Amazing that they couldn't produce even a round screen instead of this ugly square thing.

This is Apple without Steve I suppose :(

That's a rather large claim. I also find the celeb marketing thing to be a little ridiculous. It's counter to where Apple has seen the most success. They do well as a mass market brand with upper mid-range pricing. Note that this is still upper mid-range, because the repurchasing cycle is presumably much shorter than it normally would be with a watch. Most people who buy a $10k watch don't buy a new one the following year, regardless of whether they can afford it.

I miss Steve.

You miss the guy who thought faux leather stitching on a screen was a good idea?

Exactly. How convenient!

You actually don't need your phone for any of the fitness tracking functionality outside of syncing it back to the phone afterward. The Watch actually retains all of those services (among many others) even while offline/unpaired, but sure keep talking out of your ass, you seem to be pretty good at it.

You are dreaming if the think the Watch Edition will be a small upgrade. Expect to look north of $4,000. Remember its 18K Gold.

I think that te Apple Watch in not ugly in absolute but I expected a lot more from Apple.

1. I said it will be "MORE THAN JUST A $100 UPGRADE." I don't understand the disagreement.

2. It will definitely be more than $100, but I doubt it will reach $4,000.

I don't think it looks too bad, I still want one really bad, but I think the Moto360 is gorgeous and I'm a little disappointed that Apple didn't go with the classic round clock face design. Having said that though, people have been saying that the Moto360 is like having a rectangular screen with the corners cut off but that's mostly down the UI not being designed for the watch as Apple's is.

It'll be interesting to see the pricing on the gold edition. It could turn out to be a huge mistake for Apple if it's massively expensive and doesn't sell a lot of units. Best seller will definitely be the base watch or maybe the sports edition. Can't see the gold version selling well other than people who like spending lots of money on watches.

5th Avenue, Park Avenue, China, Hong Kong, India, the Middle East, Russia... they'll buy them all up.

I rather like the design. I'd like it to be a bit thinner but it's 2014 not 2041.
I like the fact that it doesnt try to emulate a classic watch, but only references it. Its not a watch in the classical sense, and shouldn't exactly copy a watches look.

Over the years I have steadfastly paid more money for Apple products because of the design. Once upon a time, Microsoft Windows was really pathetic, but Windows 7 was a workable but uglier alternative. So I paid money for the beauty of Apple design.

Not counting jelly-bean-colored cheap iPods, this Apple Watch is the first Apple product that I find revolting in its design. The biggest insult I can give to the Apple Watch design is that it looks like a Samsung.

I drool over the design of the Moto 360, and am very disappointed that the Moto 360 won't work with OSX. Not to say the Moto 360 is drool-worthy, but it is streets ahead of the Apple Watch in terms of appearance.

Jon Ive's boast that the Swiss watchmakers are in trouble, just goes to show that Jon Ive has crossed the line and started to believe in his own hype.

The design has grown on me since the keynote last night. My first reaction was 'meh', but to be honest I'm liking the sports version with the sports straps more and more.

I hate heavy watches, I have a stainless steel Tissot that I never wear because it's so damn heavy, but since the sports version is made of aluminium it should be a lot more comfortable to wear.

A black sports watch with a white strap is starting to sound quite nice :D

Um. Tough to admit as an Apple Fanboy (professed), but I won't be selling my Omega Seamaster anytime soon lol.

It's not that the watch is "ugly" per se, it's just that it's not "special" either.

And LOL at the "Switzerland is in trouble" remarks by Ive. Clearly he doesn't understand the status that is Rolex/Omega/Patek/JLC/etc... People won't buy the iWatch because it does more things. There are already watches that do more things, and it's NOT about that.

It's about status, and these watches aren't remarkable enough to generate that yet. Maybe in time, but not this batch.

Cool idea for the kids who can't afford a real watch though :D

I feel just about exactly the opposite. I feel that the Watch does offer quite a bit in terms of features, and I like that the design is small and can be dressed down to look somewhat anonymous. I also have an Omega Seamaster (Aqua Terra,) and I'm going to sell it. I'm over wearing watches for status. I'd rather have something that sends info from my phone to my wrist, since I'm constantly dealing with calls, texts and emails for the business that I own.

Rarely do I agree with that much anti-Apple sentiment, but for the most part this is spot on.

It's nice that you are "over wearing watches for status" but there is still a multi billion dollar industry built solely on that that does quite well (even if it were to lose you).

I wouldn't even mention it, but Ive's comments are what make it so laughable.

I'll continue to wear watches because of status. It's fun =).
