After years of resisting I decided to get an Apple Watch. I’ve had a Garmin for a while and really liked the 2-3 week battery life but I’d rather not take my phone when I go running. Ordered a Watch 8 with cellular this morning and then saw this. Looks like there’s decent availability for these in DC so I switched my order to an Ultra. Primarily I just want the longer battery life and I like the fact it is more durable. Yes, is is $274 more than the Watch 8 cellular but battery life is pretty important to me. I just wish there were more band choices.
Wear both! I wear a Garmin 24/7 and add AW when I run for cellular and streaming music.

I want it just for the bigger screen, but will probably wait for it to be offered in black.
Well in reality not much bigger than the 45 mm AW see this post and down in the thread there are some CAD drawings of two and the Ultra display area is not that much bigger, about half mm wider and 1 mm taller. The article starts with a photo of the two, really do not look two different other that issues with font and display in the two that poster started the post about:

the drawing is in post 49 in the thread:

Post in thread 'Apple Watch Ultra display even smaller for text?!?'

Frankly the much longer battery life and ruggedness are selling points if I had the money ;-)

apple has reduced charging cycles for Apple Watch from ~365 to ~182 with ULTRA, a big takeaway but double the price unless we use it for sports.

Wanted the Trail Loop, but it's not available anywhere where I live. Don't think the Trail Loops were available today. The others are available.
I went to my local store (Brighton, UK) and the only watches they had on display were the Alpine and Ocean loop versions, the Apple guy I spoke to didn’t even realise there was a Trail loop!

This product is the first to give me actual concerns about Apple’s in-house industrial design team. Real-world product photos haven’t helped. The absurd “crown protector” and side profile look positively dreadful and tacky.
Clutches pearls

Anybody have the white divers' band that they can try on a Series 8/7/6? I saw it quickly at the Apple Store and it looked quite nice. I think it would suit a stainless steel Watch. At $129 (CAD), it's a bit more than an impulse purchase. If anyone has any pics, please share.

A couple things make me feel like supply won't be a problem for this product.

1.) It's a high end niche product
2.) There's only one sku for the watch itself.
There's only one SKU because there's only one watch version available: no other finishes, no other sizes, no WiFi only version. It's the same as, for example, a polished SS 45mm WiFi+Cellular watch: that has only one SKU because that SKU is for that specific combination.

Well at moment in Champaign/Urbana we do not have apple store locally. So Best Buy is only local source for watches they are out of any Ultras if I were in market money wise, 4 days to out of stock. Closest Apple Store with stock is in Chicago area I found for this watch which is too far (several hours)

I bought the Ultra solely for the longer battery life. Got the alpine loop version knowing full well I was going to add the Nike sport band. Very happy with this watch.

With that logic every product.. everywhere has 1 sku - which is incorrect.

SS has 3 SKUs Silver, Gold and Graphite. You could argue that Hermes adds an additional SKU for Space Black.

This means Apple has to balance inventory of those three color options during their production process to ensure demand is met.

With the Ultra there is truly only 1 SKU for the case so they just worry about demand for the Ultra watch and the different bands that are associated with it.

I agree that it doesn't photograph well- but in person, it looks great.

I wouldn't have it even if Apple sent me one for free. It's by far one of the ugliest Apple products ever.

Eh. Taste is highly personal and subjective, at best (ffs, some people actually buy, own and drive PT Cruisers).
While I happen to like the beefier aesthetic of this iteration, obviously it's not for everyone. Which is fine. Expected. Not newsworthy. "BREAKING NEWS: People have varying taste. News at 5."

P.S. - if Apple happens to send you one, let me know so I can send you my mailing address. Thanks.

Yeah I can add my mailing address if someone wants to give me one LOL

You know you can try them on in store...
They don't actually have the ultra models in the store till the release day which is today, I went 5 days ago to the mall but they didn't have them....and I'm working till late all weekend so I cant go.

I would definitely like a better battery life that gave me two days when traveling to collect fossils, or buying and selling at mineral and fossil shows. Would not have to charge every night to go two plus days. But frankly I could not upgrade AW ultra each year like I am able to do with monthly payments on my iPhone iUP plan. $800 a pop is a bit much for the budget, and of course even if there were a AW ultra iUP plan that would add a major monthly payment on my state pension LOL (I am retired geologist for Illinois Geological Survey) But maybe down the line a couple years I might save for one. And no I do not have Apple Card to use. Still paying off some other credit card debts also which will take a bit of time and I thus did not pass their credit test but thats ok do not need more debt right now need to clear what I have first LOL
When I was in College we had a geology class and for the exam we had to recognize different stones/minerals. I could never distinguish between different ones. I had miserable experience that semester. lol.

+1

Looks much better than I expected! But sadly I’m not a fan of the Alpine loop. It’s thinner than it appears in marketing photos and feels flimsy. I swapped it out for my Nomad sport band.
