a problem with the new ultra even tho it says it has a slightly bigger screen the text on messages for the contact doesn't show the whole name while on the series 7 it does, both are set to smallest text size but for some reason the ultra cant show the know name so its actually a down size, this watch is going back, the only thing I like is the brighter display which they should of given the series 8. also the bezel and case make the screen look even smaller than series 7, this isn't good, its being returning asapView attachment 2076725

This ultra watch appears to have been designed and marketed at a specific demographic of people. Are you of this demographic? because maybe, just maybe the issue you raise was never designed to be how you would like it to be and thus might not be important to the demogrpahic of people it's being marketed to.

I am part of the demographic that Apple is targeting with the Ultra and I could care less that the corners are slightly more rounded resulting in less text being visible on the top and bottom. I care about the battery life which from all reviews is living up to expectations, heart rate monitoring, the action button and GPS accuracy which again all look to be lining up with Apples claims. This almost feels like someone is trying to create screengate...

I want a brighter screen louder speaker that should have been on series 8, most people that are buying the ultra are not extreme sport people they just want the latest and greatest and series 8 has nothing, apple said bigger display that is what I wanted

Yeah, I do agree that round shapes suck. I hope Apple gets away from that.

But I’m mainly using my Ultra for working out and the gym so it’s not an issue for me. I’ll be using my Series 7 for daily use.
Why not both? Apple has supported different resolution iPhones for years. Would be nice to have a circular watch that matches the aesthetic of traditional watches as an alternative

You are completely correct here. As a series 7 owner, I am also going for the Ultra for the longer battery life and ruggedness.

However, I must say that the people who complain about the screen size do have a point and I don't believe there is any attempt to start "screengate" (though I know that was a sarcastic remark).

Just rewatched the Apple reveal video for the Ultra and it was touted as being "the biggest, brightest display ever in Apple Watch." However, technically, I am not so certain that it is a bigger display, and if so, it hasn't been optimized well in the examples shown in this thread.

So, I understand the complaints

Could it be just a software issue, since if I measure this cut text line in your photo and compare to watch on the left, it is identical width? It just looks as if font size is a bit larger in Ultra.

I noticed this immediately on Apple's website last week, that the Ultra has more rounded corners and shows no more information in the corners. It shows slightly more of the map at the straight edges, but nothing more in the corners. I then realized that the rounded corners would not be good for text.

nope if you look at the time at the top doesn't go as wide as the series 7 on series 7 it goes over the bubble but on the ultra it cuts into it hope im explaining my self the top line cant be as wide

apple should never have said the biggest Apple Watch display ever as it really isn't in a way

Hmm, but still if I measure what is seen in your photo total width of that line is identical. Measured starting from left < to the end at clock 1??

But there is still as much information up to the corners in Ultra I that photo.

This is incorrect. It is bigger.

This is also incorrect, the S8 has additional features over the S7.

You probably need to slow down and spend a bit of time doing some research.

Just for reference to help with this. Here's the S8 screen overlayed on the Ultra. You can see how it's smaller. Just. Also, with an opacity on the S8 screen size overlay, you can see in the corners how the shape is marginally different. I mean, it's very very minor in both cases.

also the bezel and case make the screen look even smaller than series 7
I had wondered if this would be the case in the real world.

When comparing the two watches side-by-side on Apple's site, it looks like one of those "Which is bigger?" brain teasers. To me, the 45mm's display looks bigger due to the smaller bezel and case, and your post confirms it. There's a reason why most of the marketing material on Apple's site has black backgrounds...to hide the bezel and give the illusion that the display is much larger than it actually is.

You might be thinking the images aren't to scale on Apple's site, but the Ultra's display is actually slightly larger in the image. (Ultra's display is bigger by only by 14 x 18 pixels.)

Technically it is bigger, and technically it shows as much information in the corners, but for text it really is no better. Either the text needs to be displayed the same size, in which case there is no advantage, or the text is displayed slightly bigger, in which case the text is cut off more in the corners. I'm not saying it is really worse, but it certainly is not better.

Battery life and flatter screen would be what would attract me if I had a spare $800 but will stick with AW 7 for now. That is strange the text is shortened but yeah not a major issue. Doesn’t look as big (screen) as I expected with the bezel but I would take one if someone wants to give me one LOL

That overlay is very helpful.

So, technically, yes, Apple can claim this is the biggest screen to date

However, technically, no, it's not noticeably larger than the Series 7 or 8. In fact, only by a mere smidgen.

Very welcome. I did similar in another thread for the bezel size comparison. And correct, it is bigger. But then they never said it would be noticeably bigger. That's the beauty of marketing 🤣

If I had $800 or a similar iUP AW program I might get one for same reasons as you. But I do not (I also did not qualify for Apple Card since I have some debt on other cards I am paying off over 3 years).

Yeah agree about screen size not as big as I expected but would not be serious for me if I could afford one maybe next year.

Yeah this is definitely the biggest letdown of the Ultra. Missed opportunity by Apple to really make the screen bigger to contain more information, especially for apps that are related to outdoor adventures. Hopefully they retool this for a future iteration of the Ultra

But then everyone would moan the battery is even further away from Garmin. So basically, whatever they do, they can’t win.

Apple just released R19 of the acessory design guidelines, which has detailed dimensional drawings of all their devices including the Ultra watch.

For example this is corner profile of the Ultra:

ant this is corner profile of the S8 45mm:

Note that these are complex polylines, not just simple circular arcs

I’d say more of case of Watch OS needing work.

apple should never have said the biggest Apple Watch display ever as it really isn't in a way

Kylo83 on September 8th

”I agree I wanted it for the bigger display now knowing it’s the same why would anyone want a huge ugly case and get bigger bezels and screen, the normal watch is durable enough, and I wanted the brighter display and louder speakers but not gonna get it just for that, it’s a shame the series 8 is a useless upgrade.”

“Because it’s ugly and huge and not sleek, and I change the watch every night anyways and now it has low power mode, the ultra isn’t a good option at all they should of made the series 8 better”

”So silly the watch is huge because if case and bezels they should of made the screen bigger in sticking with series 7 horrible Watch updates this year”

So, you bought the watch anyway! You bought so you could return it, after complaining about it. Pathetic.
