LMAO this is getting into MacBook Pro repair territory.

You can buy whole ass iPads for that.

I think I'll buy it on my CC for their warranty.

I have no idea why someone would get a marquis smart watch and *not* get AppleCare. That's just pure folly.
If you can afford to replace a product, insurance is always a bad bet. If insurance was not a good deal for the seller, they would not offer it. Liability insurance is different.

As for myself, I will just assume that the probability of the watch breaking before I get a new one is lower than the cost of watch replacement.

I’ve went through all the versions without AppleCare on the watch. I opted for it this time with the ultra. Just a hunch

This is for the new Ultra:

499 to repair without AppleCare

99 for AppleCare + 79 for a single repair under AppleCare. So, 178 to repair with AppleCare

That is a 321 difference

If you had 4 apple watches with AppleCare over the years and never had an incident until now, you would have spent 475

If you had 4 apple watches with AppleCare over the years and never had an incident you would have spent 396 (for nothing)

If you had 4 apple watches over the years and never bought AppleCare, you would have saved 396 that could go towards the 499 repair and it would cost you only 103 more than you saved

If you had 4 apple watches and never bought AppleCare over the years and never had an incident, you would have 396 extra dollars in your pocket

And... if you NEVER bought ANY warranty for ANYTHING over your lifetime, I promise you will come out way ahead, even with repair bills like this.

So you bought 2 years, then moved month to month?
Correct.

I think I'll buy it on my CC for their warranty.

Make sure your CC warranty covers accidental damage. For an Apple TV, desktop, or maybe even a laptop with MagSafe your main issue is warranty claims, not accidental damage. Also, you may get your extra year with your CC but you won’t be able to add month to month AppleCare at the end of the coverage period.

Well… maybe. Have to look at the cost of the AppleCare and the perceived chance that you’ll have to use it. Most product insurances are a ripoff to the consumer (read: profitable for the company), or else they wouldn’t exist.
I agree with you in general, but sometimes you have more knowledge about your situation than your insurance provider does. If you wear your watch in high risk situations constantly then your insurance cost is subsidized by the people buying insurance on their Watch that they only wear on special occasions.

So, you say "it really truly is" to it being criminal. But then say next that the criminal part is "It's a figure of speech"...
Dude, please just stop. It's both comical how expensive it is and criminal (in my opinion, which despite your best efforts, I'm allowed to have). Criminal can be used in a sense that says something is disgraceful or bad.

": DISGRACEFUL It's criminal how unfunny this comedy is."

Please stop arguing the semantics of language over my opinion regarding Apple's repair prices. You're also completely wrong regarding my use of language. So please go be semantic somewhere else.

Same thing as the way people say “literally” and then follow it with something that can’t possibly have happened.
Except that has no comparative circumstance to anything I just said. You're just arguing for the sake of arguing.

AppleCare covers more than just accidental damage. Battery replacements and warranty-type failures are free. Toss in a few of those over the years and the cost/benefit can be a lot more reasonable.

I only buy a warranty on the watch, never any other device from Apple or any other company. I can replace a battery or most components on an iPhone or laptop myself. On a watch, the risk of water damage after that DIY service is too high. I have also replaced screens and even a camera module myself on iPhones as well as a MacBook Pro logic board.

Wow! Kinda a little excessive? Should people just buy another one as a spare? (Obviously a silly comment because you would pay about $300 extra for the 'backup Watch, but, wow...)

All I can say is GET APPLECARE?? I usually do because it hasn't let me down yet.

You are making hyperbolic (at best, false at worst) statements about Apple products that some people might misconstrue. I am not arguing semantics, I am clarifying your hyperbole (That you doubled down on when I mentioned that the exaggerated nature of your statement) so people know that repairing/replacing a very tiny wrist computer is expensive, and there is nothing criminal or comical about it. I don't have to stop.

No, you're just arguing for the sake of arguing. There is zero hyperbole in my comment. If you want the simplified version that doesn't offend your sensibilities, I could have just said, "Wow ... that is really expensive!"

And yes, 500 dollars is a lot to repair an 800 dollar watch. All of their products cost nearly the same to repair as they originally cost without Apple Care, which includes the iPhone and all of their Macs. It's been getting worse over the years as Apple has moved toward designing full on SoCs. And those aren't tiny computers on your wrist. You're being defensive for no reason when I wasn't even talking to you in the first place, just sharing my opinion in a forum designed for people to share their opinions. Many other people think this is expensive. Go bother them.

And again, who cares? Everything I said was my opinion. One that is shared by others. This is a costly repair and to me it feels like they are intentionally pushing Apple Care subscriptions.
