Screen size is same as AW7. I was excited because I thought it was 49mm screen, but no.

It's not though. see other comments. The ultra will be able to display more information widgets, data in its slightly larger screen.

From a review:

"That larger, powerfully lit screen can show six lines of data versus five lines while using Apple's Workout app."

I hope not. I've seen other threads where supposedly the screen is the same size.

How can I trust The Verge's opinion on Apple Watch's form & function when their website design is horrible?
The verge is a complete joke. Bunch of pedantic hipsters who only review how they feel about very specific features instead of the product as whole.

You can compare the screen sizes on Apples own website. They are essentially the same size.

I’m questioning my choice of the orange band. It’s very bright 😂

I’d been thinking the Ultra would mean the end of my silver stainless link bracelet that I rarely wear but would still like to wear on occasion. But that last YouTube video in German has the link bracelet on the Ultra and I don’t think it looks terrible. I was actually looking for reasons to delay this decision so that doesn’t help.

For me the Ultra is the only option as I don’t like the series 7 en 8. I went to the Apple Store and tried them both but they looked dated and kinda boring to me. Looking forward to Friday!
Probably the main 2 things I like about the Ultra are the addition of the Action button and the ability to track 2 different GPS frequencies. Other than that, the other features exclusive to the Ultra are not only more than I need, but probably ones I will hardly ever use.

Has anyone been able to determine whether you can use the action button to do segments/laps after the run starts? that would make it an insta buy for me.. but from that write up it sounds like that is not an option
I have the same thoughts too about the Action button. As a runner, I find double tapping the screen to mark laps a very inaccurate method. Very often, if not every time I try to double tap the screen to mark a lap, the Watch doesn't register it or it results in the Watch displaying the next screen. It's really terrible.

But then I think: is the addition of a button worth the difference between a Series 8 and Ultra? That's a $400 difference with the Ultra being twice as expensive as the model of Series 8 that I would get. SMH.

Yes and with the extra pixels of the larger screen on the Ultra they pack more items on the screen.

From review:

More data lines because of pixel density doesn't equal larger screen.

From a quick read of the article, it looks like most of the issues that does not make the Ultra a Garmin "killer" is software based issues and I think I'd agree. I had mentioned on other threads that we are in iteration 9 of WatchOS and it is still rather crazy that the following very basic software-based features are not available on a rather expensive device (and my criticism has to do with Apple software; some of my issues can be resolved through 3rd party apps):
  • No offline maps
  • After a workout, there's no way to view the GPS tracks. There's also no way to review a recorded workout and have it "play" through showing how the heart rate, pace, cadence, elevation changes in sync.
  • marking segments using touchscreen is inaccurate because it's not always clear when a touch has been registered during those time-critical moments (the addition of a 3rd button looks to be a solution and unfortunately not available in any edition of the Watch other than Ultra)
These are basic basic issues; not anything fancy. I'm keeping my Series 4. I don't expect it will happen though I hope it will, but may next year the Action button will also be available on the Series 9?

(C'mon Apple! Do better! :) )
For a watch that is trying to be "the fitness watch" it continues to be amazing how lazy the fitness app is. Nike app tracks all those things and has existed for years. Apple needs to get the software up to speed.

well I watched iJustines video and it already looks ridiculous on her wrist within the first 5 seconds of her video

While the watch may not be for me there is something rather attractive about it on her wrist. Yeah it’s big but that helps functionality. Again it’s not for me but I can see why some people might like it.

Did I miss something in the Keynote where Apple said the Ultra was a Garmin killer/replacement/competitor?

Why do these articles/reviewers insist on making this a focal point?

It is aimed at athletes, yes. It’s also aimed at those wanting a different style, something larger and more rugged.
I think it's because it's marketed towards more serious athletes who typically would wear a Garmin.
