For a watch that is trying to be "the fitness watch" it continues to be amazing how lazy the fitness app is. Nike app tracks all those things and has existed for years. Apple needs to get the software up to speed.
"Lazy" is a good adjective here. These issues are really primarily software-based, so what gives, Apple? Hurry up and fix the issues!

Garmin?? Really?? Who uses Garmin anymore?
Majority of serious hikers, bikers and all around athletes do. It’s an amazing brand that has only gotten better.

But those that want a product trying to better themselves in the same areas (Apple) that Garmin has been doing for years, but like Apples style and ecosystem, are gonna go with the Ultra.

Most likely the ones using Garmin aren’t gonna switch because of the Ultra being released though.

More data lines doesn't because of pixel density doesn't equal larger screen.

It's a bigger screen.
It has more pixels.
it can show more stuff.

I think it's because it's marketed towards more serious athletes who typically would wear a Garmin.
It absolutely is marketed towards those users. But even Apple knows that they aren’t actually a competitor of a company such as Garmin, who’s been doing this for 20+ years. They aren’t dumb. And they aren’t advertising it as a huge competitor.

Now if Apple was trying to throw shade at them, I could see it being the only focal point, but they aren’t.

Agree. I have the Epix gen 2 and its amazing. I trail run, hike and love it. I did get the Ultra, but I will be using/ interchanging both watches. Apple has a long way to go to really start chopping away at long time Garmin watch users. It was a good thing what apple did, as they realized that they were losing/ lost people who went over to Garmin or else they would not have bothered.

I actually checked out the Epix 2 on their website. I truly am amazed at what they offer now. My biggest shock was the fact their case size is down to 47mm which is a perfect size for that type of watch. Don’t know what they used to be but they looked huge back in the day, like 50-52mm.

I could be wrong of course.

To quote the posted article...
"Inspired by the "most extreme activities" like hiking and..."

I never thought of hiking as *that* extreme at all. More like a nice long walk with some camping. It's hardly extreme ironing now, is it?

Is there an alternative for the following requirements?

- Don’t want get a phone for middle schoolers due to distraction. Also they participate sports a lot so phone can be easily lost.
- Need to make phone calls and text
- at least last through a day with moderate usage. Current Apple Watch they have can barely do that - usually 10% or less

I actually could care much less about anything else other than battery life. Any smartwatch that can last longer and make phone calls?

I guess I am asking for an Apple Watch SE with a 60 hour battery

As someone who owns a Garmin, while the features on the AWU sound great, the battery life and cost is a joke.
At this price range I would want something dedicated to my needs, not a jack-of-all-trades device.
and the battery .....

You really need to ask yourself is this what I need? Or do you buy just because it is Apple?
It needs a matte black model.

No, when I needed a screen name to join this site to chat about the first Apple Watch I was sitting next to a bottle of Charles Shaw wine, better known as 2 buck Chuck.
R.IP., Fred Franzia
That's funny. I was neighbors and still friends with Chuck Shaw and his family. He use to have a very high end winery in Napa before the wifey divorced him and sold it off Franzia. Haven't talked with him in awhile. Just thought I'd check. :)

I have the same thoughts too about the Action button. As a runner, I find double tapping the screen to mark laps a very inaccurate method. Very often, if not every time I try to double tap the screen to mark a lap, the Watch doesn't register it or it results in the Watch displaying the next screen. It's really terrible.

But then I think: is the addition of a button worth the difference between a Series 8 and Ultra? That's a $400 difference with the Ultra being twice as expensive as the model of Series 8 that I would get. SMH.
I would put the action button at about 10-15% of the incremental value of moving from a Serise 8 to Ultra. It’s not really even the mix of major advantages or benefits of the Ultra vs. any other AW.

Seems reading is even harder. Here, let me help you.

It's called marketing...

Just watched DC Rainmakers review. He stated in his hands-on review that the size was essentially the same as have several others that have received review units. If you want to be a sucker for Apples marketing, by all means go ahead. The picture you posted literally shows the screens are essentially the same size.

Not sure if you're just trying to justify purchasing the watch but it's not necessary. It looks foolish to do so.

It's written, it's not comparing a picture like a child does. Read the information. How much larger, or whatever is irrelevant, it is larger.

I think it depends on the type of athlete you are. If you are a runner or other athlete that frequently marks laps for the kinds of workouts you do, a dedicated lap button (e.g., Action button) is really worth it because marking laps using the touchscreen during moments of intense exercises is not very feasible. The touchscreen often does not register the double tap or misreads it as a swipe.

I was considering paying up to get the stainless AW8 (for the sapphire screen). For $50 more, this makes me stop and consider if I need/want the extra features. And maybe that was Apple’s strategy all along…
