Ouch FitBit. At this rate I'm going to have to jump ship to Garmin.

BTW... not a hater post. I want an Apple Watch, but the battery life makes it impossible for those of us with sleep disorders who need sleep tracking.

I use my S4 for sleep tracking. Get home from work at ~60%. Charge for 40 minutes while cooking dinner, 95%. Sleep. Wake up 11 hours later, 85% battery. I haven’t had any issues and I don’t charge at work.

It’s a miniature paired down iPhone for your wrist. I’d hardly call it a brand new product. A more powerful version of the iPod nano from earlier that could be wrist attached.

A brand new game changing genre defining product has yet to be delivered

Huh?
That's fair, but I'd say the health sensors and features are making it stand apart from the iPhone.

And you’re ignoring over $5B in revenue in wearables during the most recent quarter (more than all of Netflix).
Which I believe makes watch revenues larger than that of a certain Cola company.

People have absolutely no sense of perspective when it comes to large numbers.

Great watch but it can't accurately count steps for ****... it basically records every movement of the wrist (getting something down from the top shelf, driving in the car etc) and I hope this can be fixed at some point for those of us who use that feature.

Ok, and so it sounds like you're definitely also using it for exercise tracking too, which I would also want. I'm still a bit baffled by Apple's 18 hour rating though, but if lots of people are getting 2 days out of it, I'll be looking at the S5 release with a lot of interest.

I think you have to consider battery degradation over time; perhaps 1-2 days in the first few months and then as the battery starts to lose capacity, the charging cycle frequency starts to increase further accelerating battery degedation and before long Apple will have gifted you a bit if sofware to stop your watch crashing /s

On a more serious note, I use a Galaxy Gear Fit [2] because it claimed to last 4-5 days between charging and also wanted something that would track my sleep; not sit on a charging stand whilst I was sleeping. I also wanted to auto track exercise [running / walking / swimming]. I wanted notifications and simple texting and it does all of those things and for certain, the battery lasted 3-4 days at least when I first got it. It went into a power saving mode at 20% which meant it could still track everything for ~ another 24 hours. [with a monochrome display instead of full colour] A year down the line and now it lasts < 2 days and the power saving mode, maybe 12 hours. Another 6 months from now, I can see me having to charge it daily.

I think this is why Apple lo-ball the battery life claim....for the time down the line. A friend of mine has a first gen Apple watch and the battery lasts about 2 hours between charges. It's a good stop watch now!

Off the top of my head, I think Coke has something like $30B in revenue (annual) and wearables will likely be $25B over the next year. So definitely close and your point remains.

Apple wearables are the size of a Fortune 200 company. Pretty insane.

Very few people know anything about financials here, unfortunately. They ignore them and say Apple is making bad designs and their MacBook had a keyboard problem. Those are the 2 most common rebuttals to facts.

No offense to the 7 people who own an iWatch, much like the 3 people who own the iHomePod, but is this even still a thing? I haven’t seen a single person wearing an iWatch in public. First, this thing would actually be useful if it was round. Don’t care if rectangle is more functional. Circle looks nicer. Second, no one cares about health. Americans are massively obese by choice. Stop shoving health in my face, stupid Apple. I like eating McDonald’s every day, that’s my choice, stop shaming me.

That's because an iWatch doesn't exist. You should be looking at all the Apple Watches around you, tho. Even at McDonald's; they take Apple Pay and they have a rather good chicken sandwich I eat from time-to-time. Their breakfast menu is quite good, too! New store decor in many locations is very pleasant looking.

I love it when people on here call it a niche product or something similar.

I wasn't sure about getting one initially but I absolutely love mine. Apple Pay with an Apple Watch is so convenient.

Downside to me using Apple Pay on my watch is that my wallet is in the car... with all the coupons I had clipped out to redeem!! Argh!! $1.25 in savings that I missed...dang it.

I use it for sleep tracking. No issues with battery life. During the day when I'm sitting at the desk or watching a TV I put it on a charger. I had the same concern as you some time ago but found this is really not an issue.

I'll be honest. At first I did not care and was skeptical about the AW. When series 2 came up with water resistance, I purchase one for swimming. I was hooked. Now, I can't imagine living without it. I bought three more for my family.
I miss my Omega Seamaster but it's been sitting in a drawer for the past 3 years. I hardly use it.

Well that's interesting and encouraging. I've been going off of Apple's product info. For some reason, they only rate it at "up to 18 hours"?

Interesting, I never knew Apple's own page said 18 hours, but I just checked and you're right. They must really be going for a conservative number here. I've never had it last so few hours, unless I was running for a couple hours and streaming music/radio while doing it. That's probably equivalent to leaving the flashlight on with your iPhone, but in normal usage it lasts a couple days, easy. I've been wearing it for ~6 hours so far today, and it's at 92% battery with some moderate usage. I bet I could squeeze 4 days out of it (as an experiment only, of course!)

Do you do anything special to extend the battery life (like use it with ultra low brightness)?

Brightness looks to be right in the middle on my Watch app on my iPhone, so I don't think I did anything special when setting it up. I'm going to try reducing the brightness to the minimum to get even more battery life out of it, as it seemed plenty bright already. I use the Watch in the sun all the time (I'm a contractor and it's a very important device for me), and I never considered the Watch to be too dull; it always looks great in all conditions.

It's a huge benefit for me because because I actually have a circadean rhythm disorder. Accurate sleep logs help me plan ahead so I'm able to get enough rest.

I'm not sure what kind of sleep logs you can get with the Apple Watch, maybe they won't be detailed enough for you if you need to track certain kinds of data. But it's worth a try, and Apple has a 14-day return policy so you could try it out and see if it worked. The only thing I wouldn't worry about is battery life!

Status symbol. Longevity (they can potentially be passed over many generations). Craftsmanship. Looks a bit more professional in certain occasions.

Timeless (hur hur), too.

Myke Hurley brought up this point in particular — he didn't want to wear an Apple Watch in his wedding photos because he feared that would look weird looking at them decades from now.

yep I take your point, though for a product that has been around for around 5/6 years now, I would've expected much much more, even regarding the ECG health aspect. To say that tim has delivered a new product that has game changed yada yada is an exaggeration. Once the health elements mature more, maybe it will qualify then.

Yeah but you are ignoring the fact that the smart watch market in general is quite anemic.

Considering the Apple dominated the smart watch market for at least over a year now, I’d say your statement is quite dated and frankly, doesn’t apply to the Apple Watch in the slightest.

Man, Apple and Samsung seem to be the only players who seem to care about the smartwatch segment itself.

everyone else seems to be down scaling towards fitness trackers instead of full watches.

when was the last time Android wear watches got any attention or even marketing.

apple pay.

Unfortunately it's not yet supported much around my area so I still use Samsung pay

Very true, I just received some Casio Pro Trek Smarts that I will be trying out but my Samsung watch definitely is working for me far better over other versions including my Apple Watches.

I wonder what the breakdown of aluminum vs SS is at this point. I rarely see SS models in the wild.
