Not really, it's called maximizing shareholder value. They can afford a premium over the generic adapters that will be coming out because they have good marketing and a stellar brand name. Same BS the drug companies try.

I don't know of any 'not-for-profit' computer/consumer electronics manufacturers and certainly Apple isn't one.

Ah look the standard Apple apology crew is out in force trying to cover apples pure 100% greed.

It cost them 10-15 cents to make and they turn around and sell them for $10. Apple is abusing its marketing power. Next thing Apple will do is use this to kill off working with all accessories to force everyone to rebuy them.

It is Apple SOP. They use some odd ball connector and do not follow the standard everyone else uses. Apple is just showing its true greed.

The people who are complaining about the new 9 pin port on the iPhone 5 and how there asking "why didn't they just stick to the same 30 pin port they've been using 10 years plus", are the same people who complain when iMac came out with no floppy drive 12 years ago. Just stop it already!

Shame they had already released the G3 B+W without a floppy drive isn't it.

That was progress in technology. This change is nothing more than a money grab. What the cable does hasn't changes, the speeds it is capable of are likely to be exactly the same. They have changed it purely to make some more money.

Hell no one will even be able to tell the diff if a case is on both.

So you only care about superficial differences? And why do you care what other people think about your phone?

Just because the phone looks similar does not mean Apple did not redesign it. Going to a unibody construction was not trivial for them to do.

Do you get just as angry when Apple keeps their computer designs the same for 4 or more years?

What the cable does hasn't changes, the speeds it is capable of are likely to be exactly the same.

It's likely to be USB 3, actually (both have 9 pins.).

What a bunch of whiny fracking babies! The phone will come with a cable so you can connect and charge your phone. If you want an adapter or another cable you buy it, just like ANY fracking thing else.

Crap! You buy a car spend ten's of thousands of dollars, you dont get a $5 USB cable to connect your stuff to it.

You buy a $2000 Stereo Amp and only get the power cable, no RCAs no Bi-Wires. You buy $10000 speakers and you still need to buy the cables.

It is a fact of life, get over it! Apple is not in the charity business.

That's because in all those instances there are hundreds of suppliers you can buy your own cables and adapters from. In the case of AV equipment the more expensive the hardware, the more likely the owner will have cables already or have a brand they prefer. In the case of a car, you need to do your research. iPod and media interconnects are often included in the higher priced vehicle.

In all cases the interconnect form factor is not new and is available from multiple outlets.

Your failure to see the difference is about as surprising as Apple overcharging for another generic item and people still lining up to buy it.

I call ******** on at least the "3 for $29". Apple aren't retarded and they know consumers. There's no way they are going to offer a pathetic $1 discount for a triple buy.

Have they allowed 3rd party vendors to have access to the pin-outs or specs?

Apple hasn't even confirmed that these exist yet. Why would they send out specifications to anyone before they actually announce that they exist? The product leaks are bad enough as it is.

The EU, aka GKB, standard. Government Knows Best and does best when they dictate to industry. Yep, government, they are always on the leading edge. Although, when it comes to gouging and greed, they are are the experts. I change my opinion, the govt, perhaps the UN, should dictate the cell phone/charger connector. A bunch of blue helmeted inspectors in every factory.

Wow, that's really insightful. Thanks so much for sharing. BTW, What is the Internet?

OMG. People, get a grip. The charger will come with the phone. If you want to buy an adapter so you can use your old stuff with the phone, it's 10 freaking dollars. Skip Starbucks for a day or two and you'll have the money.

I can't wait until the phone is finally up for pre-order and everyone can start freaking out about shipping times instead.

You could tell that to Apple just the same... it cost Apple a lot less than "10 freaking dollars" and no one at Apple will have to give up a Starbucks either. There really is zero reason for Apple not to supply one adapter with each new iOS device as a good will measure. It's margins are not razor thin but consumer's positive view of Apple could be if they burn customers like this.

It's not the $10 people are whining about, it's the annoyance of being nickel and dimed after buying a $200+ phone along with a $2000+ cellco contract.

or you could go on ebay after couple of weeks and get 3 for dollar from china.

THANK YOU! I dont understand people who buy any accessories from Apple store. From cases to cables to chargers you get it all on ebay for cheap.

I bought an iPad 2 case on ebay right after preordering the new iPad, I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived from Hong Kong that it already had a hole for the mic.

Those guys react in days.

man, this DOES kinda stink.

I understand that I will receive, in box, a new wall plug with an appropriate cord.

What I DON'T like is that I've currently got it set up to where I have my OEM 30-pin cable at home by my bed (the one that came with my phone). I have another 30-pin from my iPod nano in my car. I have ANOTHER 30-pin from my wifes iPod Nano at work plugged into my computer and yet another 30-pin that came with her macbook pro in my wife's car.

So when I get the new phone, I'll replace the one by my bed with the cord that comes with the new phone. BUT, at least initially, I'll need to shell out $29 for three adapters (one for my car, one for wifes, one for work) in order to maintain the current level of convenience that I have.

Sure, I could just buy ONE and carry it around with me but that sort of defeats the point and negates the convenience that my current setup has going on.

Same here, I use different cables car, home, office, warehouse as I destroy them somehow over time.

The 30 pin is terrible IMO.

Since I am patient in waiting and don't belong to the "we want it all and we want it now generation, I will gladly wait until my contract for the current 4S is up.

By then (another year) I'll be buying 10 oem cables on ebay for 2.99 each.

They are OEM, as they are being siphoned somehow off the production line.
(At least my current 30pins are)

Companies are not in the business of developing things and selling them at cost.
Surprise it includes Apple.

Not defending Apple, but that's what they offer and you DON'T have to buy it let alone buy their product.

Hoping these are more durable, even not having it oriented is already worth it.

BTW: it's apr. 4 cents a day over a year adding shipping and tax

I'm not sure if they will sell that many adapters, wouldn't you just use the new lead that I'm assuming will be part of the iPhone '5' package? But do we know if it's USB2 or USB3?

An adapter in a dock device might work but it would in a lot of cases sit the iPhone up too high and some divices where space is an issue the long next iPhone may not fit at all. JMO

I agree, hopefully they will include one adapter. The only reason I could think they wouldn't is the assumption that not every buyer will have a need for one. It COULD be wasteful. But it would be even better if they offered one for free for any existing iPhone customers. I have at least 2 devices I'll need adapters for...and could probably make use of one or two more.

You got lucky, then. But it is not "bull" that generic cables are cheaply made. I do agree that Apple's cables are overpriced, though.

I, and millions of people are doing just fine with generic cables. Maybe it's YOU that got a lemon.

I bought a black cable off eBay for $0.99 last year. It has worked perfectly fine for a year. It's not falling apart and it charges just fine.

I recommend you just buy one and carry it around with you for a few weeks. Soon the third-party cables will appear, and you can stock up on them, or buy them one at a time.

Eventually, you'll end up with more 9-pin cables than you need, and you'll have these useless adapters to toss into the drawer with your S-video cables and Firewire 400 cables. So don't overdo it buying adapters to replicate your current setup.

Exactly. Apple re-designs the dock connector every eight or nine years like clockwork. Barstids!

According to Wikipedia, USB 3 9 pin is without power... the 11 pin version is powered. I would assume they'd want to allow charging, so this may just be a good old ploy to make money.

Note, I'm not any kind of expert with USB, just going off the wiki.

But the point is that this connector offers LESS utility...

And, further, I can't see how this flat connector ate up space as people seem to want to claim. We've seen all the internals, how does the small connector save room for anything? My little nano that's like an 1.5 inches manages the old connector and a 3.5mm jack, no problem...and I believe it's quite a bit skinnier than the i5.

This seems to be a cheaper connector. I would guess Apple is saving money going to this design, but it's sure expensive to all of us who have all the peripherals with the old dock.

The price of the adapter I don't much care about, even if they gave them away we'd be losing functionality....for instance, I have a Sony dock that lets me play video (not HD, but still) and that's just missing from the new phone. And who knows if the adapter will sit correctly?

I plunked down 100 bucks on an AV dock a few years back and now Apple is just changing to make money? I wish someone could give a plausible benefit for this new connector, but so far USB 3.0 is the only thing I've seen...and that wouldn't be powered USB 3.0, so I'm doubting that.
